One of the things that massively disappointed me about River of Fire is that essentially. No. One. Dies. Given all the dangers that the Clans faced in this book, not to mention its' apocalyptic-sounding title, I was shocked to find that it had ended with so few casualties. Especially given how many kits are being born, the size of the Clans (Especially ThunderClan) is getting ridiculous. There are 30 warriors/queens in TC now, whilst the other Clans are averaging 13-15. In part to ease my frustrations, here are the cats I wish died in this book and hopefully cats who will die in the finale. Sickness:- Plumkit - The first to go, and would've caused TC to be especially mad at WC.
- Whitewing - Would've added heartbreak to Dovewing's return
- Squirrelflight - All 3 medicine cats would've been devastated, and it would open up the position to the younger cats (On a side note, if Lionblaze takes her spot I'm going to throw hands)
- Brackenfur could be cured but the sickness could make him realise that its about time he heads to the elder's den. - No one dying in WC would make TC even angrier and create some good conflict.Storm:- A cat or two from WC - As they have little to no shelter, which is why they were eager to help RC.
- Stormcloud - Out of sheer irony
- Ambermoon/Rosepetal/Larksong - Some of the TC cats that went to help the other Clans, which would let Bramblestar snap and tell RC that they're being ridiculous.
- Mistystar - She could have saved Softpaw and died in the flames, and there could have been a chapter on finding Reedwhisker.
Other cats I hope are purged:- Daisy/Thornclaw - I don't think I could ever see either as an elder, it'd be nice for them to have a good sendoff
- Honeyfur/Mousewhisker/Sorrelstripe/Leafshade/Hollytuft - Have hardly even existed in this arc.
- Cloudtail and Brightheart joining the elder's den. Having Cloudtail moan about everything and Graystripe bringing up how difficult he was as an apprentice would be cute.
This may sound harsh, but even if all of these cats died/retired, ThunderClan would still have more warriors than if WindClan hadn't been touched at all, not to mention 9 kits in the nursery and 3 medicine cats. What do you guys think?

that's disappoint. I'd not finished river of fire yet, but I think I sort of half doubted it to start with. After omen of the stars they forgot how to kill. well half true. lots of shadowclan cats did die.

did you make an account here just to complain about river of fire? that's dedication! Haha I've been lurking for a while now, and used to be part of the old board back in like 2010-14. I then went to BlogClan, but you couldn't really facilitate discussion there, and all the threads ("Articles") had to be modded by Kate, which meant that I was always hesitant about posting something controversial.

I absolutely agree that Plumkit and Whitewing should've died of the sickness. It was annoying to see them tease that possibility and then not act on it. I also like your idea that this could be the impetus for Brackenfur (and others?) finally moving to the elders' den. However, I think Squirrelflight should still live a bit longer.
I wouldn't have killed Stormcloud in the storm at all, but cutting down on some of the useless characters like Rosepetal or Ambermoon would have been appreciated. I'm also baffled that they didn't kill Mistystar in the storm given how obvious of an opportunity that was.
Thornclaw definitely should get an in-battle death like Dustpelt did, rather than moving to the elders' den. Cloudtail and Brightheart can be an adorable old elders couple.

Honestly I wish more cats did die. Preferably, this would be my list for elders/deaths just in general:
-Cloudtail, Brightheart, Thornclaw, and Brackenfur for the elder's den -Leafpool dies so we don't have three medicine cats -Squirrelflight could've died from the sickness, given how the end of the one chapter made it seem like she was in critical condition then just kinda ignored it -Birchfall, Whitewing, Berrynose, Mousewhisker, Cinderheart, or Poppyfrost could've also died from the sickness. At least one or two of them I mean come on -Hollytuft, Sorrelstripe, Leafshade, Honeyfur, Larksong, Ambermoon, or Dewnose could have also died -One of Cinderheart's or Blossomfall's kits could've also died
It's kinda BS that only Briarlight died of the sickness. Especially since so many had it

Random person on Kate’s blog: “Do you think there are too many cats in ThunderClan?”
Kate: “No comment”.
... not sure if she’s hinting at an upcoming purge or just pretending that they aren’t that big or :/

If they are building up to a purge I’d be ok with it But this book WOULD have been the book for purges. There were so many disasters and dangers, the perfect time to thin the herd! And no. One. Died. (Except Briarlight). The drama was just GONE. I don't have words for how mad I was when Squirrelflight randomly got better off-screen--don't get me wrong, I love Squirrelflight, but if you're going to end the chapter with "*gasps* SHE'S SICK!" and have a POV character who is her son, I expect SOME sort of scene between them. Some drama and tension! Instead we get nothing.

Yeah, I feel bad for saying, but I agree. Maybe not cat deaths, but really--Brackenfur, Thornclaw, Cloudtail, & Brightheart ALL need to go to the elders den. Brackenfur is ancient. He's been around since the second book of the whole series. (Nothing against him, he's awesome)
I forget about all of those random characters that they turned into warriors without any happenings, like Hollytuft, Sorrelstripe, Leafshade, Honeyfur, Larksong, Ambermoon, and Dewnose. At least Larksong has more of a role now, but everyone else is barely mentioned.
I feel like if they did purge some ThunderClan warriors, that those would be the most likely to go, and that's too bad. We need more charactarization.
I mean, what has Mousewhisker even done his entire life? Who is that? I still get him confused with Molewhisker!

Would rather the older cats die off so the younger cats have room to shine. The only reason they're just there is because the older generation is stealing all the spotlight. Kinda reminds me of the current status of the workforce in the states, lol.
Also considering there is only one more book left in the series, unless they're gonna end things on a big cliff hanger like they did in POT, and purge cats in the very last book, I highly doubt anything will happen. The other option is a time skip, but some of the cats deserve better than that. The fact that TC is so flipping big isn't good either, because other new characters aren't being developed properly, and I'm losing motivation to read this crap. This is why Hawkwing's Journey was okay, at least they touched up on ALL the cats, at least most of them in the book. The current series won't do that because the flipping POV keeps jumping from clan to clan (thanks Twig).

I really wish they would start killing more characters, because it's getting at the point where nothing matters. We've been through massive battles, fires, floods, pandemics, hurricanes, badgers, foxes, dogs, and everything inbetween and hardly anyone dies besides one random background character with no personality or dialogue. Time after time after time it really makes the series feel like nothing is serious. The characters hype things up like they're the worst anyone has ever seen, but nothing bad ever happens. They just defeat the bad thing and go on with their lives like literally nothing happened. And when someone dies die, twenty new characters are immediately born to take their place so there is no impact there either.

Yes! I've been saying this since the LS greencough epidemic that killed NO ONE. I'm sorry, but cats that are too weak to stand and kits that are sick and starving should not have survived that. Well, Firestar did lose a life but that didn't reduce the population at all.
There has been so many missed opportunities to cull the herd. The battle in Eclipse, the aforementioned greencough epidemic, the drought, I could go on and on. The battles with Darktail were great opportunities to end Brackenfur and/or Thornclaw as I doubt either will ever retire. Having cats be permanently injured would help empty out the warriors' den too.
And above all, we need to start having multiple kits deaths an arc. Even with the best vet care available, plenty of house cats have stillbirths. We need to see more apprentice deaths too. They're not full grown yet and many are reckless. Have one get killed by a fox or die in battle. We should not be having 3-4 kits per litter and having every single one living to be warriors. The whole point of having big litters is so one or two can be killed off as kits and there's still some left to be developed.
And above all, do not tease possible deaths and do not deliver on that. If it's a catastrophic event like an epidemic or a massive battle, don't just hint at things and then have everything fixed the next chapter.
Now I can't comment on the ROF epidemic since I still haven't read it (d*amn you B&N!) but I will come back and comment once I have.

i agree. i was so disappointed with the lack of deaths. thunderclan is way too big to the extent that we barely get to see most of the characters, let alone get to know them. i preferred the older books where they focused more on sharing more of clan life and the interactions between background characters. now i don't even know who half the characters are.

Huh? Why would they be angry at WindClan? The only ThunderClan source for the herb needed to treat the sickness was on the WindClan border, which was picked clean by Kestrelflight even though WindClan had a separate source on the RiverClan border. Alderheart comments that he's slightly irritated by this, but it doesn't delve much further. If a bunch of ThunderClan cats died because they couldn't be treated whilst WindClan had more than enough, it could've caused a lot of tension and conflict (And maybe have given Alderheart something to do other than "wait and see" as he says about five times this book)
