Presuming total AU in which Tigerclaw either didn't exist or was killed at the battle of Sunningrocks, Redtail becomes leader after Bluestar. Who would make a good deputy for him? Bearing in mind that both Lionheart and Whitestorm were fairly old by the end of the first arc (or... would have been, poor Lionheart), while Dust/Sand/Fire/Gray would be the youngest.
You can pick it based on how well you think they'd do / did do as deputy, or set up an AU event in which they might have been chosen to be deputy (for instance, what if Dustpelt had found a stride in organising patrols while Bluestar was sick with greencough, or Sandstorm dedicated her training continuously to outshine her previous denmates). We don't know an awful lot about Redtail, so make assumptions that you think fit into his character.

I was thinking either Lionheart or Whitestorm.

If it was my way, the battle ends. Tigerclaw is killed, but does save Mousefur's life. Rusty still does join the clan due to the fire thing. Into the Wild stuff goes. Ravenpaw stays in clan. During Shadowclan's attack, Bluestar loses a life, leaving her with one. During Fire and Ice, she gets greencough, but survives long enough for Fireheart and Graystripe to return Windclan. Redtail becomes Redstar. He appoints Lionheart. Forest of Secrets event happens. When the rouges attack, Lionheart dies, and Fireheart is deputy. Rising Storm happens. Basically the same, except Redstar loses a life in the fire. Dangerous Path occurs. No Tigerstar, no dogs. The darkest hour, now this gets interesting. Bloodclan sees how well the clans are doing, due to boulder in the clan. He challenges them, and lets them decide. They battle, and redstar loses a life from Bone, a bloodclan cat, and two from scourage, before Fireheart kills him. Fireheart (not star)'s quest. All of the events are the same, except Fireheart doesn't lose a life. TNP: basically the same, but Onewhisker dies, and Redstar loses a life from a tree. TPoW: Mudstar is leader, and the power of three are born. Same plot. Redstar dies twice in here Oots: Now Firestar gets to shine. Remember, Redstar is very, very old (no mistystar immortality here) and has one life left. Fireheart is also pretty old. Tallstar's dream of Mudstar basically starts becoming true, and Redstar is killed by him. Fireheart finally becomes Firestar, and a battle begins. He loses one life, but at the end, kills Mudstar. AVos: Idk.

AVos: Idk. I didn't get the chance to reply until now, but I LOVE the thought gone into this! Even if fire does 'save' the Clan to make the prophecy happen, he didn't have to become leader quite so young. Also, the idea of Firestar bringing down Mudstar is interesting, considering Onestar's reign has been compared to what Tallstar dreaded Mudclaw might well do. Thank you for the response, and your effort and creativity gone into it!

As the poll stands now, with Lionheart at 12 votes and Whitestorm at 9 votes, makes me miss them all over again. Though they would have been elder age by the end of the arc, they were both fantastic cats it feels we didn't get to see enough of - Whitestorm helping Fireheart when he was deputy just made me want him to be the actual deputy more, and Lionheart had a tragically short space in the books considering what we saw of him in the first arc. At least we saw Whitestorm for longer and in Bluestar's Prophecy too.
It's also interesting considering how much might have changed in the later arcs. Fireheart would have had more experience when he became deputy, and Redstar might well have proved a more effective leader in the second arc. Even though Squirrelpaw would have been his granddaughter, he might not have agreed with Firestar's assessment of the 'fire and tiger' prophecy, and though that wouldn't have stopped her from leaving, it could have been more beneficial in all their character development.
