Appleleaf quickly padded out of the medicine den. “Gingerpaw!” she called to her apprentice. They needed more thyme; Cherrypaw had fallen from loose rock in the gorge and was in shock. “Gingerpaw, take Nettlewhisker to get some thyme from the patch right outside the gorge for Cherrypaw, alright?” Gingerpaw nodded and dashed off to find Nettlewhisker. Appleleaf sighed sadly.
Ever since Appleleaf’s menor, Frecklenose, had died falling from the ledge where herbs were stored, Appleleaf had been very serious about her work and longed to give Gingerpaw her final name, but she knew that she had to wait until Gingerpaw was ready. She was jerked out of her thoughts when Gingerpaw came back with a mouthful of thyme and a poppy head. “I thought you could use these” she whispered, her voice hoarse and rough. Appleleaf was a bit worried now. Gingerpaw had been quiet for a few days now. “Gingerpaw,” Appleleaf questioned, “Are you okay? You’ve been awfully quiet lately.”
Gingerpaw sighed. “I’ve had a bit of a sore throat…” she mumbled and shuffled her paws. Appleleaf gave Gingerpaw’s ear a quick lick then pulled some honey-soaked moss out of the crack in the ledge. “Here. Lick this. What does it do?” She asked her apprentice. Gingerpaw sniffed it, and after a moment said, “It’s honey to help with my sore throat.” Pride swelled inside Appleleaf for her apprentice who she had trained so well.
A few days later, it was the half moon. Appleleaf and Gingerpaw padded to the Whispering Cave. It was Gingerpaw’s first time going to share tounges with Starclan. Gingerpaw bounded along eagerly and was the first one into the Whispering Cave. “Now,” Appleleaf instructed quietly, “Place your nose along the back wall, and don’t forget: never share a dream you don’t know the meaning of.” Gingerpaw nodded slowly and padded up to the back wall of the cave and touched her nose to it. A few moments later, she had drifted off into a deep sleep. When Appleleaf was sure of this, she allowed herself to fall into the same deep sleep.
Appleleaf woke on the banks of a stream, with her mentor, Frecklenose, looking at her. “Hello, Appleleaf.” She nodded politely. Appleleaf nodded in return. “Before peace comes, a new face will show, and a new set of paws will walk the gorge.” Frecklenose whispered solemnly then began to dissappear. “Wait! Please tell me more!” Appleleaf begged, but before another word was said, a face of a cat appeared in the river, its features distorted.
Appleleaf gasped and opened her eyes and saw that Gingerpaw was stirring as well. Gingepaw looked worried about something. “A-Appleleaf? Can you decode this dream?” Appleleaf nodded slowly, and Gingerfern continued quietly. “Frecklenose was there… She said… ‘A new face will show, and peace will shatter while new paws walk the gorge.’” Appleleaf gasped. Her dream had been so similar. “Who are the new paws? Should we tell Leafstar? What does ‘peace will shatter’ mean?” Gingerpaw wailed. Appleleaf licked Gingerpaw’s ear gently. “We should tell Leafstar, but there’s no need to panic, young one. We will be alright. I think the ‘new paws’ mean another Clan may join us, and bring with it a lack of peace. That happened in the forest where Firestar is,” she soothed, “Come, we need to check on Cherrypaw now. Then we’ll talk to Leafstar.”
