This is a letter I wrote last year...I think it introduces me well ☺ the woman in my profile pic is also Gillian Philip btw 😉
To the Author Who Has Changed My Life,
My name is Lauren and I am 27 years old. I have been reading Warriors (and Seekers. Survivors, and Bravelands) since I was 12 years old. I wanted you to be aware of how deeply your stories and writing have affected me over the course of my life, and probably will for the rest of my life.
About 15 years ago my mom took me to Barnes and Noble and I stumbled across this beautiful book with this gorgeous bright orange cat on the front. My cat-loving little self had to have it. I began reading "Warriors: Into the Wild) on Halloween night. The story spoke so strongly to my 12 year old heart of a character who so desperately wanted more out of life...who knew in his heart he was meant for so much more...and I had felt the very same way. Since that day, every Halloween, I re-read your very first novel. Your book became the reason Halloween makes me so happy and gives me such a deep feeling of nostalgia. Halloween is my favorite holiday thanks to "Rusty" (Firepaw/Fireheart/Firestar). Halloween and Warriors, for me, go hand in hand.
And so the life-long love began. I lived for every time one of your books came out. I signed up for your newsletters. My amazing mother, who first taught me to love reading, pre-ordered every book. As I got older and ventured into middle school and high school, well let's just say I wasn't in the popular crowd. I dealt with bullying and being ignored for several years. But when I picked up a Warriors book. those feelings disappeared. It's like your words are magic. No matter how deep the pain, the Warriors books always made me feel okay.
When I was 16 I lost my beautiful Siamese/Himalayan cat named Maggie. She and I shared one of those rare human-animal relationships you only get once in a lifetime. My heart was shattered, and to this day thinking of her still makes me cry. I re-read parts of your books where beloved characters like Silverstream and Spottedleaf died and watched how Fireheart and Greystripe dealt with their grief and oddly enough, it helped...a lot.
In college I went through my first real heart break and I spent an entire month reading nothing but your books. Just as before, your words worked their magic and within a month the heartache was gone. No other book has ever done that for me to this day but your books.
I brought your books with me when I went to the police academy. Whenever I felt stressed or like I was not good enough I sat in my room and read your work and felt at ease. Once again your characters and their stories somehow calmed me and gave me courage.
I am writing this to you with the latest Survivors book next to me and my heart racing with excitement to read another new Erin Hunter book. To many my story may sound silly, but I think you will understand. You know first hand how much these characters mean and how deeply even fictional work can affect you.
Thank you for sharing your stories with the world and please never stop. <3
15 years and counting
