Random, but does anyone else just get random surges of gratitude toward God? Like, it just happened to me. I get all giddy and have to say a quick prayer thanking Him for all He's done. It's so cool. Yeah I was actually thinking about this just yesterday. I'd just be so hopelessly lost without the Holy Spirit living in me. Praise God for saving us when we didn't deserve to be saved!

DID SOMEONE MENTION GRACE UNPLUGGED
I didn't think it was cheesy. Grace never has, like, direct confrontations against her faith. It's more like she's lived her whole life sheltered, and the movie follows her chance experiencing the reality of not only celebrity living, but the challenges in life. It felt very well done to me, and actually inspired me to start learning to play the guitar.

Legit question for other Christians here: What do you consider to be the greatest sin? Are all sins equal to you? Would you consider someone who is a glutton, a liar, or prideful on par with someone who's gay (if you're the kind to consider homosexuality a sin) or is there a difference? What about considering someone who's a murderer on par with someone who's a thief? What about a murderer and a liar? Genuinely curious. Catholics belief in gravity of sin. That meaning that while all are wrong, some have worst affect on the soul than others. To understand how this works, one must understand the nature of what Christians consider sin. "Sin" is anything that goes against what God wants, or in other words, anything that is bad for our soul. So anything that damages our relationship with God is considered a sin. Though He is always willing to show mercy if we repent, we also have to choice to turn our backs on him and refuse his forgiveness. So, just like in any relationship, certain decisions have more weight than others. Obviously, stealing your friend's car is way worse than calling them a bad name; while one is clearly worse, both will have damaging effects on the friendship. So it is with humans and God. Therefore, destroying another human (as they are made in the image and likeness of God, just like the rest of us) is certainly one of the worst kinds of sins.
Specifically, Catholics generally divide sins into two severities: venial and mortal. Venial sins are harmful, but not so serious as to completely block you from Heaven. Mortal sins are those that are so evil that nobody who dies with a mortal sin staining their soul can enter heaven. For instance, murder is a mortal sin, while a white lie would be venial.
Of course, from there is gets fairly complex. It depends on the specifics of the sin to determine the severity, so I can't really lump together all gluttons as venial sinners, or all liars in as mortal.

Just to clarify, the "venial sins don't completely block you from heaven" doesn't apply to non-believers, right? My understanding is that in Catholicism, venial sins can be easily forgiven, but mortal sins require purification beyond just asking God for forgiveness, and if a believer dies with a mortal sin unpurified, they don't make it into heaven. But any sin, mortal or venial, is enough to keep one from heaven if they aren't in Christ. Is that correct?

My understanding is that in Catholicism, venial sins can be easily forgiven, but mortal sins require purification beyond just asking God for forgiveness, and if a believer dies with a mortal sin unpurified, they don't make it into heaven. But any sin, mortal or venial, is enough to keep one from heaven if they aren't in Christ. Is that correct? Well, firstly Catholics believe that someone has to be baptized to be saved--not just believe in Christ. Whereas it's seen as an important symbol in other denominations, it's seen as 100% necessary for salvation to us. This is because we consider Original Sin to be hereditary, and as it's mortal, those who die with it marking their souls can't be saved. Baptism is seen as the only way to remove Original Sin (it's effect still lingers, i.e. inclination to sin).
Venial sins can be forgiven without going to confession. We can go straight to God for those. HOWEVER, sins confessed privately receive no grace or indulgence. When Catholics go to confession, we get what we call "sanctifying grace", because we believe it's a sacrament. Sanctifying grace is like super-charged grace from God that helps us resist temptation and do good. You don't get this if you don't confess the sin via reconciliation. Think of it in this analogy: Reconciliation is like taking your car to the car wash AND the gas pump, whereas private confession is just going to the car wash. Mortal sin, however, cannot be forgiven privately, and so we must see a priest about confession for those. This is because the sin in question is seen as so severe, we need the sanctifying grace from the sacrament in order to help repair (or scar over) the damage it does to our soul. Whereas venial sin makes the car dirty, mortal sins are like a car-wreck that twists the metal; it's not a DIY job, we need to have it straightened out by a "professional" (a priest!).
But I believe you are right, if I understand you correctly. Venial sins that aren't confessed sacramentally must otherwise be confessed privately. And obviously, a person won't do that unless they believe in God. Non-believers aren't baptized to begin with, so in our eyes, they can't get into Heaven anyways.

Thank you I appreciate it. It's going to be a difficult thing. See his dad cheated on her when he was in high school and it's been a rougg time since. She's been waiting for him to come back home ever since. Her oldest son is in the military over seas and my guy has been living with her so she won't be alone. It's completely up to him because they moved to the southern US where I am from Canada. So all of her family is up there. It's going to change a lot in her life and his life. Idk what's going to happen. I think the marriage plans he and I had will probably not happen the way we thought.
