Do any of you have a favorite scripture?
Or, if you don't read the scriptures, or don't read them regularly, are there any religious quotes you particularly like? Or just a feel-good quote in a book or one you've heard?
My personal favorite is 1 Samuel 16:7 - Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature: for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.

My favorite scripture is Genesis 3:30. I don't know if it's different in your Bibles, but I'm using the Inspired Version.- For, as I, the Lord God, liveth, even so my words cannot return void, for, as they go forth out of my mouth, they must be fulfilled.

Hm, interesting. My Bible doesn't have a Genesis 3:30, but Isaiah 55:11 says much the same thing: "so My word that comes from My mouth will not return to Me empty, but it will accomplish what I please and will prosper in what I send it to do."

I love this thread so much, because it's rare to see such an in depth, civil discussion about difficult topics like these. Well done.
As for me, I was raised Baptist and I still am a Baptist. My grandfather is very strong in his faith and he runs a local jail ministry. He's also convinced that when he had a heart attack a couple of years ago, the only reason he lived is that God kept him from death to preach about the Word. I would say I agree.
Rend Collective and Casting Crowns are great Christian bands. The Chronicles of Brothers (by Wendy Alec) is a pretty good Revelation based series, though it's not without its faults.
Feel me to ask me anything about my denomination or my beliefs. I just didn't want to get on a tangent yet when I'm not quite sure what to talk about.

One of my favorite Bible verses is Isaiah 40:28-31, which is "Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint."

I can't say I have a favourite Bible verse, but a parable that has always stuck with me is the parable of the Good Samaritan. Mainly because people quote it wrong all the time. Someone who is just generally good isn't really a Good Samaritan. I think they have to be someone who overcomes societal expectations and helps those in need, even if they are from a different societal group. It's about loving your neighbour, but also loving your enemy.

On the subject of God's Not Dead: my eyes have never rolled into the back of my skull so hard, so many times, over a time span of a whole hour and fifty-two minutes. I'm not going to go to much into it, as I would go on forever. God's Not Dead is a string of mindbogglingly contrived scenarios glued together with deathbed conversions, Atheists™ who are not actually atheists, they just hate God ("How can you hate God if you don't think he exists?" asks the steadfast and likeable Josh to his arrogant, rude, wholly unlikeable lecturer. Josh makes a good point, ladies and gentlemen. How indeed.). This lecturer should be fired. The fact that he isn't in the courtroom instead of that nice woman in God's Not Dead 2 is beyond my understanding. All of my (agnostic or atheist) philosophy and history lecturers somehow manage to stutter their way through their turgid job without muttering a word against Jesus. This movie was the epitome of disappointment for me. It started off well, with this smart guy called Josh ready to defend his beliefs in the face of adversity. My hopes rose. Not only is freedom of religion enshrined in law in most Western countries, it's also just common sense. I was going to see some intelligent debate go down in this classroom! Josh gathers his books and studies hard. The audience is rooting for him. What a guy! What a concept! He gathers the best reasoning and arguments he can, and turns up to his class, executing them perfectly. The audience holds their breath to see what the atheist professor will counter with. But. Turns out his professor is the worst person to walk the Earth in their local area. So, it turns into Josh arguing against what is not only a brick wall, but a brick wall that holds his grades hostage, a wall that hates him, a wall that hates everything. I sigh. This is what atheism is in this movie, apparently. He sheds his obnoxious long-term girlfriend (because Josh was obviously too dumb to see those personality traits within her that would lead to her betrayal) and almost loses everything he has. It's eventually revealed that the professor's wife or mother or whatever had cancer or something and she died; he hates God as a consequence. Everything turns out okay in the end, because the Atheist™ gets hit by a car and then we have a nice little sing-song. Also. Everyone in Josh's class was converted to Christianity. Every. Single. One. Don't get me wrong. There are some parts of this movie that are great! The music is catchy and emotional, the characters of the nice guys are super cool and I actually cared about them. I wanted to see what would happen to them in the future! At least the annoying atheist was dead, so I could watch the sequel in peace. But wait! In God's Not Dead 2, there's a clearly incompetent and despicable atheist lawyer who throws a teacher into court for mentioning Jesus in a classroom. My eyes once again roll. I am now as blind as Jayfeather. My view is that God's Not Dead is harmful to Christianity, religion in general, and atheism. It makes me laugh, and it makes me cry, and it makes me want to leave this Earth forever. It's so obviously contrived, with such poorly executed antagonists and plotlines I just... how does this even exist. I think it's unfair. I wanted a great movie about standing up for what you believe to be right. I wanted so many things, and this movie gave me this pile of junk in return. [Edit: here, have a couple of articles articulating it better than I do: Original Sequel]

I like Owl City, he's Christian and if you haven't heard him, he writes songs about his faith and other songs, too, that are very good. And he writes music for everyone. There's a few songs about his Christianity and God and Jesus but he has other songs that everyone enjoys, no matter what they believe in.

Rανєη'ѕ ƑƖιgнт: Hola! That's really cool about your grandfather, I'm glad he survived. I love Casting Crowns too, not sure how I forgot to put them up on the front page. I've only heard a few Rend Collective songs. I attend a Baptist church, so I'm pretty solid on most Baptist beliefs, but feel free to talk about your beliefs!
