"I Promise" - an original story
A sword slashed through the air, connecting to flesh with a sickening slash. Red droplets appeared, the crimson color bright against the blacks and greys of the alleyway. Seconds later, a body thudded to the ground.
Standing silently over the body was a teenager with messy blonde hair, piercing blue eyes, and an oversized overcoat. In his left hand sat a silver blade, now tainted with blood. The young man stared blankly at the corpse, wiping the bloody blade over his overcoat before sheathing it at his belt.
Footsteps caught the boy's attention, and his head snapped up. His hand moved to rest on the hilt of his blade before he spun around, eyes blazing. The silver blade's tip sat aimed at the man's throat.
The man blinked his emerald green eyes. His gaze held no fear, only curiousity and pity. "Easy there, kiddo." He suggested, raising his hands slightly in surrender. "I come in peace." Despite the sword that was only inches from slashing his throat open, a small smile tugged at the man's lips. "Heh, I've always wanted to say that."
The boy frowned deeply, his blue orbs narrowing slightly in evident confusion, "Who are you?" He inquired, his voice soft and melancholy. His arm lowered slightly as he debated if this man was a threat or not.
A warm smile spread across the man's bearded face and his eyes sparkled, "Chase Roman, at your service." He winked fearlessly at the blonde teen, "What's your name, kid?"
The boy looked surprised, and his sword arm fell limply to his side. He hesitated. "My name is Tobias." He said finally as he sheathed his blade in his belt once again.
Chase's grin somehow widened, "Tobias, huh?" He hesitantly took a step towards the teen, his eyes studying his bloodied overcoat. "So, T... Can I call you that? Tobias is a bit of a mouthful."
Tobias gave no response to the question, only stepped back when the man stepped forward. Terror flashed in his sky blue eyes, and a tremor passed through his body as he realized who this man probably was. Tobias' brother probably didn't need him anymore, and had sent this man to kill him.
Chase frowned when the kid shied away from him. He raised his arms over his head, "Hey, hey, easy." He cooed gently, "I won't hurtcha, bud." He promised, giving Tobias another warm grin, "I just wanna to help."
The blonde watched the man warily. He didn't trust those words, in fact, they only served to frighten him more. However, he kept his expression blank as he spoke, "James sent you to kill me." He said simply, "I am no longer useful."
The dead look in Tobias' eyes caused an involuntary shudder to pass through Chase. What on earth had this kid been through? The man ran his fingers through his short brown hair as he mused silently. After a moment, Chase replied, "No, kid. I don't know who this 'James' fella is, and I am not here to hurt ya." Chase smiled once again, "How about you and I get somethin' to eat? You look hungry."
Tobias wasn't hungry, he was starving. But, he wasn't sure if he should trust this man, no matter how kind he seemed. Kindness was never real, in his limited experience with it. Someone 'kind' always wanted something. However, that didn't change the fact that he felt like his stomach was eating itself. Finally, he sighed. "Alright. I will eat with you."
Chase grinned at the small victory, "Great! Follow me, T." He kept a wary eye on Tobias as he led him to his house. While he accepted that death was a part of life, he prefered to die fighting demons or something, not getting stabbed in the back by an incredibly scary and angsty teenager. When they reached his house, he unlocked the door and motioned for Tobias to go on.
Tobias walked into the house, blue eyes flickering over his surroundings. He mentally noted all of the windows and doors in case he needed to escape before following Chase into the kitchen. He silently sat at the chair that the strange man had motioned towards.
The man felt Tobias' blue-eyed gaze on him as he bustled around the kitchen, making pancakes. It was only eight in the morning, and Chase adored pancakes. After making quite a few of the fluffy tastes of heaven, he made his way back over to Tobias, two plates stacked high with pancakes in hand. He plopped a plate in front of the kid before digging into his portion.
Tobias stared down at the pancakes, uncertainty flooding through him. The man said he didn't know James, but there was no reason for Tobias to trust a word he said. Chase had probably poisoned the pancakes or something.
Chase stopped shoveling the pancakes into his mouth and watched Tobias. He let out a heavy sigh, "I didn't poison 'em, kid." He assured.
Tobias stood up abruptly, knocking his chair over. His hands trembled, "W-Why should I trust you? I-I've never met you b-before, and y-you're being so kind." He spat the last word out like it was bitter, "You either w-want something or want to k-kill me!" Tobias' entire body was trembling now, "Seeing as I-I'm u-useless and c-couldn't give you anything, you wan-want m-me dead!" Tobias clenched his fist, his nails digging into his palms, "Just get it over with!" He ripped the sword from his belt and threw it on the floor. Unshed tears sparkled in his eyes.
Chase watched the sword clang to the ground before looking back at the boy. His expression softened, and he stepped forward, putting a gentle hand in Tobias' shoulder, "First off kid, I don't want anythin' from ya." That thought was accented by a gentle squeeze of the kid's shoulder, "Second, I have no intentions of killin' you. I said I wouldn't and I'll say it again." He put his other hand on the boy's other shoulder, "I will never hurtcha, Tobias, I promise."
And with that, Tobias broke. The pain and terror of the last eleven years pummeled into him full force, as well as the thought that someone actually cared and wouldn't hurt him. He collapsed into Chase's arms, allowing the man to pull him into a gentle, yet protective embrace. His body shook with uncontrollable sobs.
Chase simply held the boy who would later become the son he never had and whispered soothingly to him. "Shhh, it's okay, kid. I've gotcha, I won't let anyone hurt you again." He rocked back and forth gently until Tobias went limp against him, seemingly sound asleep. A fond smile flickered over Chase's face as he lifted the kid into his arms, "I promise."
