I've got a question.
So, I've been looking for a way to give my art more exposure. I've previously been using Tumblr, but its not working out for me, so my thoughts immediately went to Deviantart, since it has so many great features (I adore the gallery function). The flip side of that, though, is in my experience, there is a huge amount of art theft and bullying, and as a highly anxious person, thats not really an environment I want to expose myself to.
I'd really like some insight on the community, and I figured that there'd be a few members here who also have Deviantart accounts, so I thought I'd better ask. Mostly I just wanna know if the community is as toxic as the Tumblr community (I highly doubt it, but I still wanna know) and if art theft is as common as it seems to be.
Um, thats about it for now, I think.

The experience on da all depends on who you put yourself around. To be popular is to always be uploading art and looking at other art to favourite and/or comment on.
I'm more inclined to look at someone's profile if they choose to interact with me, if you feel me?

It depends on where you go?
if you go into fanart and/or adoptables and things of that nature expect drama. On the flip side these venues do give fast growth of followers and lots of commissions/money if you're in it for that. but if you do original works and especially original worldbuilding/detailed/realism you'll get a more stable base that grows slower. Although the quality takes more time so you really have to commit to keep uploads consistent.
I've seen a few things about theft but a) 90% of it is just "u stole MY style!!!11!!" even if the other person had it first and it was only brought up because that person got popular enough they noticed and the other 10% usually gets jumped on by the community and banned pretty much instantly. I'd be sure to watermark everything in a place that's hard to crop out or just add a few slightly discolored pixels in a shape in a place they won't remove like a face (I usually do like a square or diamond in the pupil of an eye) if you want extra proof just in case.
However I wouldn't personally use deviantart as a venue of exposure in the first place. It's a large community and you're sure to get views, but I would never put anything up there I actually cared about because, well, it's the internet and who knows what someone could do with it. I either make things specifically for deviantart or generic things like dragons and landscapes and stuff. I never really wanted to be a part of the community though, I just share for fun, so I wouldn't really know how much help it could be to be part in full?
What do you mean by 'exposure'? More likes and followers for motivation? Feedback? Making money? It's good for those, but anything else I don't know.

Thanks for all the feedback, guys. Honestly, I’d prefer to stay on Tumblr, cause it’s an environment I’m familiar with, but since I’m working on a webcomic that I’d love to share and post, it’s not as practical as other sites out be. Tumblr also doesn’t give much of an opportunity for comments, but since I tend to cross-post to the forums it’s usually ok.
Brownie Making money would be nice eventually but at the moment it’s more about gaining a following. I’m certainly more interested in original stuff than fanart. I only draw fanart these days if it’s a gift for someone, and I’d rather not compromise what I’d like to draw for the sake of popularity. I draw because I like it, that’s it.
So yeah, my primary concern at the moment is finding a good way to share my comic, but at the same time I’m terrified of art thieves. At the moment it’s looking like I’ll only post it to the forums. As much as I’d love to throw it out into the world, I’d probably die if someone stole it.
I get that there’s probably as many thieves on tumblr as there are on DevArt, but I’ve seen it more on DevArt. I swear 75% of the artists I follow on there have had things stolen. Yeah, I’m pedantic - I sign everything, and since I’m primarily traditional, I have hard copies of everything.
