Or it could be that he was either too controlling or too distant and unreliable?

Youngjae never said that he was good at relationships or commitment in general, but he always tried to be careful. It wasn't as if he was looking to start a family with any of these girls that he sought out at clubs and bars and it wasn't as if he was trying to get blamed for passing on diseases that he knew he didn't have or worse, contracting something undesirable from a one night stand. Never once in his life did Youngjae think that he might run into a situation quite like this.
It was a rainy summer afternoon when the doorbell rang to Youngjae's apartment and he opened the door to be met with an angry, albeit tired, looking woman and a child that must have been no more than four or five years old.
"Jae, this is your daughter. Take her."
"...I, what? I don't--"
"Shut up, I don't care, take her."
And he'd gotten a thin manilla folder shoved into his hands and he blinked, and the woman had gone. The girl, his daughter, began to cry upon realizing that her mother wasn't standing behind her anymore and there was nothing Youngjae could do but stare dumbly and wonder how this could have happened to him.
The girl's name was Briana Delgado. She'd taken her mother's surname, from what Youngjae could tell based on the birth certificate in that folder. The father's name had been left blank, but it wasn't as if he was going to ask for a DNA test on a little girl. Even more than that, he didn't want to risk getting a test only to find that the woman had been right. He didn't question how she found him. It wasn't as if his own habits were normal by any means.
Briana cried herself into a stupor that afternoon and fell asleep from exhaustion. The next day, she cried some more. Youngjae didn't know how to help her. He was only twenty-six. He wasn't ready for this kind of responsibility.
Five days later and after some light stalking on the internet, Youngjae took Briana and took a taxi to the outskirts of the city. He needed help. He needed help, but he had no family aside from a father he would not speak to. He needed help, but he had no friends he was willing to tell about Briana and no partner at home to support him. He had no one to turn to.
As the taxi drove off, Youngjae steeled his nerves and walked up to the door of a small, quaint house. He heard the pitter patter of small feet behind him, felt a small hand grab at his jeans as he raised a hand to knock. Please, please, please...
Brianna mumbled something about having to pee, but Youngjae barely heard her.
The door opened.
"Hey."

Youngjae wasn't quite sure what he'd been expecting. Maybe a hi, maybe a smile, maybe a curiously raised eyebrow. Whatever it was, he had definitely not been expecting to be told "No."
Though he supposed that that was his own fault. It wasn't as if they'd broken up on the best of terms and it wasn't as if he had pushed for them to stay together, promised to change or to do better or anything. He just remembered feeling numb and cold and trying to get the words to form but failing. He remembered leaving because he was told to go and never show his face again, any possible explanation or consolation dying before they reached his lips.
"Hey, hey, hey! No, wait, Simon, wa--" He planted his palm on the door to keep it from slamming in his face, mouth working frantically as he tried to come up with something to say, something to convince his ex (the only person he'd managed to be in a relatively long term relationship with in the past...what? Almost ten years?) to hear him out. Then, something moved against his leg and Briana stepped up to the door, eyes wide as she gazed up at the strange man in front of her.
"Do you have a bathroom? Can I go?"
Youngjae squeaked, his face pale as he looked down at the small girl, his hand coming away from the door to hover over her shoulders as though he wanted to hold her but was afraid of touching her. It's been almost a week and he still didn't quite know what to do. Technically, he was her father. Technically. But it didn't feel right to treat her like his daughter and he had a feeling that she didn't quite understand what to make of him, either. For the time being, she called him "Jae-Jae." And she only called him when she was hungry or thirsty or wanted to watch TV and it hurt him to see her so quiet and withdrawn even if he'd never seen her act otherwise. More than once, he'd wondered if there were more kids like her because of him, if he'd messed up more than once. If this was his punishment for that, then he supposed he deserved it.
"Simon..." A final plea, his words stuck behind his lips as he watched Briana. Let me explain.

Well, Simon definitely didn't want to see him, and he wasn't ever the best at talking anyways. He thought that Jae had wanted something he wasn't going to listen on to people begging him for money now that he had some. He had seen two of his exes recently and both pulled that same trick.
He heard the desperation in the mans voice and was surprised to find the door being caught by the others hand. That was enough to make him pause and take a deep breath, telling himself to be the bigger person, that he could talk to him. It had been a year, after all, and sure he was pretty bitter but he could still stand to talk to him with him not being inside the house. He was about to open his mouth and deliver a scathing and well thought out response, something he'd been waiting years to do but the anger died down when a little figure came out from behind his ex.
It was a little girl. A little girl that was asking if she could use the bathroom. He took a deep breath at the sight. This kid had a lot of explaining to do. He rounded on Jay and was ready to demand that he explain everything when he heard that pleading voice.
Dang it.
That was the voice that always made him forgive this son-of-a (insert word of choice here) and even now his resolve was crumbling. He couldn't say no to this guy and there wasn't anyway he was going to leave a kid on her own with him, either. That was just a disaster waiting to happen. So he gave the little girl a smile and gave her a little nod. He extended his hand so she could take a hold of it before heading inside. "Sure, sweetie. You see that door right there? That's where the bathroom is." He said, pointing to it, and then patting her on the back and letting her go to the bathroom. He'd always had a soft spot for kids and he just couldn't say no to a sweet face like that. Once she had gone to the toilet, though, the friendly and soft expression faded as he turned to glare at him.
"I swear if you've kidnapped a kid or something I'm going to call the cops." He snapped, not quite letting Jay in farther than the living room, glaring at him with all the pent up resentment he could muster.

{ Maybe one or two years? A significant amount of time? }
Youngjae watched dumbly as Briana took Simon's hand without hesitation and let herself be led inside this house that she's never seen before. She hasn't even held my hand yet? He followed the two of them inside, lingering around behind them as Briana was shown the bathroom and made her way over. She was acting so natural. He wished he could be like that.
Before he could say anything to explain himself, Simon had rounded on him, accusations on his lips and resentment in his gaze. Jae tried for a smile, though it came out more like a grimace. "No, I didn't kidnap a child. That's...no." He knew Simon hated him but he didn't think it was enough to make the other think that he would sink so low.
"You're not going to believe this -- or maybe you will -- but, uh, she's my...daughter?" His voice lifted at the end, making the statement sound more like a question. He still wasn't processing any of this correctly. "I mean, I was told that she's my daughter. This woman came by my place a couple days ago, dropped Briana, the girl, off and said that she was mine and to take her. And then before I could do anything, she was gone. And...yeah." He gestured weakly towards the bathroom door, eyes falling to the ground. For the past week, he hadn't been able to eat or sleep properly, the stress of having another human in his care wearing him down. He'd even taken the entire week off work and he was certain that his manager was on the verge of firing him but it wasn't as if he could just leave the girl home alone.
"Look, I'm sorry. I know I'm the last person you want to see but I just..." Youngjae took in a deep breath, closing his eyes. "I mean, I have no one else I can turn to. ...That sounds pathetic, but it's true. I haven't...you're still...you're the longest relationship I've ever had." The person that he felt like he knew best, even after all this time, even after all that he had done. He wished that it never would have come to this, but he couldn't rewind time and force his old self to be better. So here he was. What else can he do?

{ ah no worries xD it's a good post }
"Five." Youngjae answered quickly, meeting Simon's eyes so that the other would know that he was telling the truth. "She's five." He didn't know if he would've been able to work up the nerve to come ask Simon for help if Briana had been two or three years old. He wouldn't have expected any kind of hospitality if the child had been a result of one of his affairs.
When it became clear that Simon was willing to put their own past to the side and help him with his newfound daughter, Youngjae couldn't help but smile, his features lighting up in relief. "Thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you!" He almost went in for a hug, but held himself back. He doubted that that would be the right course of action here. "I owe you...a lot."
As if on cue, Briana appeared at the bathroom door and walked over to them, wide eyes looking up at them as she grabbed at Youngjae's jeans again. He beamed at her, though still keeping from touching her. "Briana, this is...Uncle Simon." He glanced at Simon quickly, as though looking for permission that he'd evidently already taken for granted. "We'll be staying with him for a while. Here." Briana didn't say anything, just nodded ever so slightly as she continued to stare. He wondered if she had been like this before her mother had...dropped her off, or if she'd always been so quiet. He certainly hadn't been like this when he was five, though his parents must have wished that he had.
"Let's go...see your bedroom, then?" The question was directed more at Simon than it was at Briana, but the little girl nodded and tugged lightly on Jae's jeans, though he was pretty sure she shouldn't know where her new bedroom was supposed to be.

Simon gave a hesitant nod when he was assured that she was about five. That was pretty clear that she was older than two or three but sometimes there were talk three year olds. He wanted to say more but the little girl had flushed the toilet and returned to them. So he put his own hostilities for a few moments for the girls sake and put a smile on his face. He made sure that it didn't look too forced because sometimes kids picked up on that pretty fast.
"Yeah. You do. The moment you're on your feet and able to care for her on your own I'm kicking your sorry as- butt out of here." He growled, watching his language, knowing that the kid was in ear shot. He walked further into the house, smelling the food he had been cooking, knowing he'd have to feed all three of them now.
He only gave a slight nod when he was introduced as uncle Simon because that was the easiest thing to be called at the time. "Hi Briana, it's very nice to meet you. Do you have any nicknames you like to be called?" He asked, leaning forward so he could talk to her. He couldn't crouch because it was hard with the prosthetic but he did everything to make himself be smaller. He was a pretty tiny guy since he barely reached five foot five of he stood up straight. But for a little kid he was still pretty big.
He then leaned forward and offered his hand to her again. "Now tell me, sweetheart, do you like dollies or stuffed animals better? Or trucks?" He asked, knowing he had some kid toys around here from when Layla was younger. He pushed open the door to his third room. There wasn't much in it, a queen sized bed with a lot of pillows and a soft blue duvet on it, plus a dresser and a small tv. There was a chest there and that was where all the toys were. It was just a convenient place to store it because Layla didn't want him to get rid of any of her toys from when she was little.

"My mom calls me Bree." The girl offered, readily taking Simon's hand when he held it out to her. Her eyes widened at the size of the room, for her mother and Youngjae both lived in relatively small apartments and though she'd been sleeping on a queen sized bed at Youngjae's place, the bed made it so that there was little room for anything else. Here, the bed being in there still somehow left room for a dresser and a tv.
"Mmm...I like dinosaurs." She decided. "Stuffed animals are cool, too."
Youngjae trailed behind the two of them, lingering awkwardly by the door as he watched them interact. It seemed that Simon was a natural with kids and the sight of it made his heart ache. He might have been promiscuous during their time together, but it wasn't as if he hadn't loved him. They were together for two years, after all. If he didn't care about Simon, he wouldn't have stayed much longer than a month or two at most.
Sometimes, when he woke up to find himself in the bed of a stranger or when he was home alone at night, unable to sleep, he wondered if things could have been different for them. Better.
But now wasn't the time to reminisce about the past.
He shuffled into the room, hands in his pockets, unsure of how to proceed. Hearing Briana talk about her mother as if she still expected to see her made his insides clench. He didn't think Delgado would be running back to visit after that speedy departure. Even more than that, he didn't think she'd be willing to risk seeing him again.
"Hey, Simon? Is there anything I can...help you with? I know this is...really...sudden."

{ Sorry!! I've been a bit busy the last two-ish days and I totally forgot I had to reply to you x-x sorry sorry }
{ I also want to say that we can share Bree as a character, in case you were holding back rping her If you feel that your replies would benefit from her saying or doing certain things, feel free (: }
"You seem pretty awkward with Bree."
Youngjae bit his bottom lip. It was true, he was extremely awkward around her. To him, Briana was like a fragile martini glass. If he made one wrong move, she might shatter. For the past few days, he'd been tiptoeing around her, only talking to her if she asked him for something or if it was time to eat. Although the little girl didn't mention it, Jae was pretty sure that she thought their relationship was awkward, too. He bet she wanted to go home.
Of course she does. His tiny little apartment could hardly be called a home and his cooking skills were...well, they were nonexistent.
"Uh, yeah. Of course. I can do that." He forced a smile, nodding as he retreated from the room, hoping that he wouldn't actually have to do much more than plate the food.
Being in the kitchen, smelling the cooked pasta, reminded Youngjae of home. It reminded him of being at his mother's and, well, it reminded him of being with Simon. Hm. He looked around the in the cupboards, pulling out three plates and going to see if he could portion out the pasta meant for one. There was some guilt in his demeanor as he gave himself a smaller portion than what he gave Simon and Bree. He wouldn't have much time to eat, anyways. He'd promised his manager that he would be at work tonight, that he would take a longer shift to make up for his week-long absence.
Setting the table was a mindless task and calling out that the food was ready felt like an empty endeavor. The longer he lived, the more he experienced, the more Jae felt as though he would never have the kind of domestic life his parents wanted for him. They wanted him to be like his sister, to settle down and form a family. The first disappointment for them had been when he told them he was bi. The second was when his first long-term relationship turned out to be with another man. That pretty much shattered their hopes of having a daughter-in-law.
"Dinner's ready!"

(It's all good! And awesome, thats good to know!)
Simon had been around younger kids for a good portion of his life and while his father had been alive he'd been the one who had practically raised his baby sister. So he knew better than to tiptoe around a child just because they were little. So he remained completely relaxed around Bree while his ex seemed to tiptoe around him like she was about to shatter. It was definitely amusing to see Jae be so uncomfortable and perhaps this was some kind of karma for his promiscuity.
Unfortunately he couldn't let this child suffer because of Youngjaes incompetence so that's why he found himself playing with some dinosaurs that he'd found with Bree. The girl was a real sweetheart and he was trying his best to keep her focused on somethign fun instead of waiting for her mother. He didn't know why anyone would abandon the poor child especially considering she was five. What could have happened to have driven a mother to abandon their child like that? Of course Simon was only making assumptions and he knew that he'd have to sit down and have a serious talk with this man once the little one was in bed. He swore he was going to have an headache again at the thought of all of this.
But he kept his smile on as Bree started to rattle off the names of all the dinosaurs that he had, clearly liking them, which was nice to see. He'd purposefully forget the names just so she'd correct him... then she giggled at his joke which was definitely a compliment. "Hey, Bree, why couldn't the Pterodactyl use the bathroom?"
"Because it couldn't P?" She guessed but Simon shook his head.
:Because it's extinct!" And that was what put the pretty quiet girl into a fit of giggles. He grinned at that and took one of the dinosaurs and idly made it "walk" around as they waited for the other man to tell them dinner was ready. Maybe he had been a bit too critical, but that had always been a fault of Simons, he either found someone perfect or he sought out every imperfection and pointed them out when he was upset. Right now he was very upset with the man for even showing up here so he was being even more critical than he usually was.
When he heard the "Dinner's ready!" His heart tightened in his chest, remembering all the times that Younjae had said that... and most of the time it was a botched meal but they all still tried to enjoy it. They even had fun with the burnt food at one point... but now he knew it was going to be a forced and awkward situation. He still managed to give Bree a small smile as he took her hand and led her slowly to the table. He noticed that one plate of the creamy alfredo and chicken had less and automatically assumed that was Brees since she was the smallest.
"Okay, Bree, this is your seat here. Remember, no feeding the animals even if they beg." He told her, watching as his two shelties already settled down next to his usual seat, looking up at the table as if they were ready to snatch the food right off from his plate.

When Youngjae emerged from the kitchen with a carton of lemonade that he'd found in Simon's fridge, he was met with the sight of Bree settling down in front of the portion that he had originally plated for himself. There was a moment of hesitation as he debated the merits of explaining himself before he decided against it. He was awkward enough as it was. So he went around the table to sit down across from the young girl.
"Do you want lemonade, Briana?" When she gave him a nod of affirmation, Youngjae poured a cup for her, setting the carton down to the side. He'd poured a glass of water for himself and for Simon -- he wasn't sure if the other's tastes had changed since they were together, but water had seemed like a safe and unobtrusive choice.
He glanced down at the two dogs currently crowded around Simon's seat. He'd always liked animals. Jae liked animals, too, but he didn't trust himself enough to keep any of his own. Maybe that's why I'm so bad with kids, too.
Youngjae was quiet as they began to eat. He figured that if there was anything for him and Simon to talk about, it wouldn't be in front of Briana. There was no reason to involve the girl in their complicated relationship, especially with the messy situation that she was already in. On top of that, he wasn't sure if any attempts at conversation would be much appreciated, given how clearly upset Simon had been when they'd shown up earlier in the evening. It was better, he decided, to let Simon start a conversation on his terms.
Well, he may not be willing to start a real conversation for fear of hostility, but Jae at least wanted to let Simon know that he was going to be gone for most of the night, leaving his ex to put Briana to bed. "I, uh, I have work tonight. I'm taking a double shift, so I'll be leaving in...an hour? Won't be back until morning." On multiple occasions, Jae had wondered if his work schedule had also been a factor in their break up. Maybe it wasn't as obtrusive as his...his behavior, but he knew that it wasn't ideal when one of them worked nights and the other did not. It wasn't as if he worked every night and he'd been trying to make the transition into taking morning shifts right before the break up, after which he decided there was no point.
Maybe the fact that he worked at a bar had been a factor, too, now that he was thinking about it.
In the end, even if Simon hadn't caught him in the act and kicked him out, Jae wonders if they would have broken up anyway. If he would have been the one to call it off, because in many ways, Simon deserved someone better.

Simon took a slow sip of the water given to him, happy that he had been given that instead of the lemonade, because that was only there since his little sister loved that drink so much. He personally was an incredibly picky man and citrus was somethign he couldn't stand. So he took the cold water and took a few sips before starting in on the alfredo, content with the quiet.
There was nothing to say to him, anyways, since he just ws here for some help wth Brianna. Other than that there was no reason for the two of them to talk and Simon had no intentions of talking outside of that... plus finding out what had happened because how could Simon be the only one who could help him? Maybe the man just knew that Simon could never say no to him... that sounded about right but he was never oneto jump to conclusions.
So for now he stayed quiet, planning on doing so until Bree was put to bed, then he'd let the man have it. He already had his tirade carefully planned out and he knew that it would be enough for Simon to stop being so furious. He'd still be mad and wary, of course, but not as furious as he wsa. He just needed to talk to Youngjae then he'd be better about this whole situation. I, uh, I have work tonight. I'm taking a double shift, so I'll be leaving in...an hour? Won't be back until morning At that Simon looked up and pursed his lips together slightly.
Of course the man would be working all night, just like he always did, why would Simon expect anything different? Surely now that he had a kid he'd try to get a different shift but no he was still putting his job over everything else. If it was even more possible he felt bitterness rise up in his chest again. Sure, it hadn't been every night, but that had been a source of his own pain during their relationship. It didn't help that he worked at a bar and that's where most of his affairs took place no doubt, and even now he felt that same feeling of his heart being crushed, but now he told himself to stop being so sensitive. Jae wasn't his anymore and he could screw whoever he wanted to.
"Alright. But please be back by nine. I have a doctors appointment I can't miss tomorrow." He responded in what was a disappointed tone that was badly veiled by what Simon thought was neutrality. He picked two pieces of chicken off of his plate and fed ti to his dogs, eyes shifting down to his prosthetic before looking back up, anxiety flickering onto his features. It was just a routine checkup, his annual to make sure his cancer hadn't come back, he'd already done the scans and they'd be going over it tomorrow. Then he had his PT so there wasn't anything he could do to reschedule it.

"Yeah, of course. I'll be back by six." The mention of a doctor's appointment made something in Youngjae's demeanor soften, made his eyes shine with something close to concern. When they were still together, he'd always done his best to be there for Simon's checkups, it had been the least he could do. Now, the reminder of why Simon had a prosthetic leg, the reminder of the cancer he fought, served only to bring back the memories of his concern.
"Do you--"
He almost asked if Simon wanted him to go with him. Force of habit. Thankfully, he was able to cut himself off before the words slipped through his lips. That wasn't his place anymore. "How have you been?" The question was open-ended, but aimed towards the issue of Simon's leg and the progress being made there. I shouldn't care anymore. And yet he still did. He supposed that it'd be difficult not to care about something as big as this.
He supposed that it'd be made more difficult if the other person was someone who was once very important to you.
As Youngjae finished up his pasta, he noticed that Briana was finished as well and that she was now nursing her cup of lemonade, bringing it up for a sip every once in a while. He stacked their plates on top of one another and gestured vaguely in Simon's direction, asking wordlessly if he'd like him to take his plate as well. A quick glance at his phone told Jae that he had another forty minutes before he had to leave, though he might just leave earlier to make sure that he was on time (and to escape the atmosphere, he'd always been a little too good at running from his problems). In any case, it was enough time to do the dishes, help clean up a little bit.

Simon simply nodded at the reassurance. That meant that he'd have plenty of time to get ready before the appointment and that Jae would be there to wake Bree up and get her ready for the day. Was she in Kindergarten or Preschool? He'd need to ask Jae and make sure that she was able to get there if she had school. He twirled another piece of his pasta, hoping that the conversation was over with... but of course it wasn't. He heard Jae start to ask a question, one that he had a feeling he knew, something that he'd always done when they were together...
Jae was always there when he could be for his checkups. He didn't seem to like the thought of Simon going to the oncologists alone and for that he'd always been grateful. When he was younger and fighting the cancer he'd been basically alone, living with his mother and his sister living with their uncles, and so having that extra support there even if it was a little late was something he'd always been thankful for. But now he wasn't so happy about the idea of Jae coming along because Simons health really wasn't any of his business anymore.
"I've been good. Just a routine checkup and some extra blood panels. Nothing to worry about." He responded in his quiet "I-don't-want-to-talk-about-it" voice, finishing up his pasta and scooping the creamy goodness of the remaining alfredo sauce into his mouth. He had to start blood tests now, his doctors worried that his old chemo might trigger Leukemia like it had in their other patients, so now they had to watch for symptoms of that too. He swore it never stopped, and for a moment that exhausted and defeated look made it onto his features, only blinking it away when Younjae gestured towards him for his plate and he managed a tiny smile as he gave the plate to him. "Plus PT. So nothing out of the ordinary."
"Hey, Bree, why don't you go get ready and play with the dinosaurs for a little bit?" He encouraged the younger girl before telling her to keep her drink in the kitchen. He had a strict no food or drink policy in the bedrooms. He then wandered over to the kitchen and started to dry the dishes that Younjae cleaned, slipping back into their old rituals without even thinking about it, staying quiet for just a while longer before deciding to bring it up.
