Sam was annoyed by Carter. Arlo and Chase had tempers too, but they managed to control them. Why couldn't Carter grow up and control his as well? She didn't like Mason's expression, and figured it'd be best to stay between Mason and Carter. So she physically stepped between them. She nodded at his stupid nickname comment, assuming it was one of Carter's stupid nicknames that he'd tried to get her to use at first. Of course, then her dad came around and ruined everything and hen Carter lost any smudge of childhood or innocence he had left, not that he had had much.
"Oh, I'll admit it," Carter said, his icy blue eyes locking onto Mason. "I have no problem admitting it. It's these three that are going to play nice. Do their best to make friends with people that will probably stab them in the back," he hissed. It was clear he didn't trust any of them. And his friends didn't blame him. They were just better at hiding it.
Sam grasped Carter's arm and he let out a low groan of pain as she practically froze his arm. She let go, leaving no mark except for a white hand print where she'd grabbed him with all her strength. He shut his mouth and glared at her. "Look, we might want to kill each other, but I think it's best we work together. Who knows what kind of dangers await us in there?" she pointed out. "Look, for now, we just have to put our differences aside and figure everything out." She looked at her group, though she found herself stepping into the role of the leader. She shared it with Carter and it felt good to be back where she belonged.
Sam had been about to reply to Ava, but watched as Zero silenced her. She kept her mouth shut as well, not wanting to make anything worse. She glanced at Carter, glad to see her coldness had worked on shutting him up. He was fire, sensitive to the cold. Of course, it could backfire. He could very easily warm her up just like she had cooled him down and that would definitely make her shut up.
Chase frowned. "But we can't leave her. If Maya and Quinn show..." he trailed off. Maya had been his best friend besides Arlo. The thought of possibly getting her back made him happy.
"Maya and Quinn are important, but so is figuring out where we are," Carter pointed out. Sam widened her eyes, surprised that he had said something intelligent for once.
Sam looked between Mason, Ash, and Jace as they took their turns speaking. "Splitting up sounds good," she decided, earning a glare from Carter.
"Are you stupid, Sam? We're strongest together and I already lost Maya and Quinn and you. I refuse to lose Arlo. Or lose you again," he said, his gaze turning to her.
"What about me?" Chase asked, stepping up to Carter. He folded his arms, hearing Arlo's voice. Let it go, bro. You know Carter cares about you in his own special way. Chase ignored the voice.
"Well, is just that Arlo is better than you," Carter replied.
Sam glared at him. "Stop fighting. Chase, you know the rest of us love you. Carter, Chase is a good guy. Now, stop acting like you're six. You're embarrassing me." She turned back to Mason, looking between him and Ash.
"Sounds good. Zero, Mason, Arlo, and I can explore the city. Chase, Carter, Zeke, and Ash can stay here. The rest of your people can do whatever they want to do," she said, glancing at Ava and Jace. She didn't know ad honestly didn't care at this point. All she knew was that Carter should stay away from Mason and Chase would be the most excited to see Maya and Quinn.
"I still don't like the idea of splitting up," Carter said. He looked at the twins. He knew they really wouldn't like splitting up. Had he ever seen one without the other? He didn't think so.
Arlo opened his mouth to argue, but Chase put a hand on his shoulder. We should still be able to talk. It'll just be quieter, like that time in Thompsonville. This might be a good idea. We can split them up and learn more. His words caused Arlo to relax a little.
"We're agreed to Sam's plan," Chase said, speaking for the two of them. "And, yeah, I want to stay here. If Quinn and Maya come..." he trailed off and shook his head. "Arlo is more of the explorer type," he said with a wry smile.

Mason wanted to disagree with Sam's splitting of the groups, but honestly, this was perfect. Zero was the best asset to have. Even if he didn't have his guns (and he was a perfect shot when he did), he was still an amazing fighter and could easily take someone with just his hands. Of course, Mason didn't know what to think of these people.
Zero and Ava were great fighters. But against the people and enemies of their world. Mason suspected that these people weren't human, but he wasn't sure what they were. He had noticed how Carter's arm had turned white for a brief moment under Sam's hand. That alone made Mason rather suspicious. Plus, if none of them were truly human, why would these people be?
"I think that's a great ideas, Sam." Mason said, smiling in his guarded way, with the partial smirk. His facial expressions tended to be fairly easy to predict, and he almost never seemed to appear anything but confident. "Ava, Jace, stay here and try not to die of kill any of these people." He said, shooting a warning glare at Ava. "I want you away from everyone else."
Zero nodded his head in agreement. "Definitely. Ava, don't move unless needed." Ava was like an always loaded gun with your finger hovering on the trigger. She was easy to ignite and once she started, it was hard to stop her. "Keep an eye on Jace. I don't care what happened. He needs you today."
Ava growled, but did as she was ordered. Although Zero was supposed to be her hunting partner, she tended to listen to him as more of a boss. Even if they were supposed to be equals, it was easy to tell which of the pair was in charge. So she walked a few feet away and took a seat in the meadow, her body still tense, with Jace stumbling after her. He almost seemed to collapse beside her.
"Zeke, Ash. Be... good." Mason didn't have much else to say to the pair. Frankly, he had mixed feelings about the two, and he knew that Zero and Ava probably had some pent up hatred towards them. Hey, Zeke's throat didn't hurt for no reason, after all. "Alright, let's go." He said and started towards the city with Zero walking after him. Even if Zero seemed distracted, he was actually always listening. Ready to move and fight in the blink of an eye if need be. He was also always loaded gun -- but there wasn't a finger over his trigger.
Ash watched the pair walk away and she found herself... Well, uncomfortable, to say the least. She stood near Zeke, looking at Carter and Chase with both curiosity, and a guarded expression. She didn't completely trust them -- then again, why would she? -- but at least, if needed, Zeke and her could always fly out of the way if they tried anything.
Although, that wouldn't help Ava, and she wasn't sure of Jace was even strong enough to fly.
Zeke was... an interesting figure, to say the least. Dark skin, the vivid blue hair, and the equally vivid blue eyes. Almost to the point that they were unnatural. He didn't seem as guarded as everyone else and instead, he stood a bit behind Ash now with his posture slouched and his hands shoved in his pockets. He didn't say much because, well, English was hard, as was speaking given his injured throat. He was more of a figure than someone that would, well, talk.
"Umm... How do you all know each other?" Ouch. Ash realized that was a horrible way to start a conversation, but it was far too late now. It had happened, and she had to live with it. Hopefully, they would be understanding.

Sam smiled, arms folded across her chest, and turned to Carter when Mason agreed with her splitting up of the two groups. "At least someone likes my ideas," she said with a smirk. She really just didn't trust Carter to go along with Mason. Mason's partner looked pretty tough and Sam didn't like Carter's odds against both of them. He was a good fighter. Scrappy and willing to do whatever he had to to win. But she knew she'd be an idiot if she really thought Mason and Zero were as inexperienced as the people Carter normally picked fights with. Chase seemed to think the same thing, meeting her gaze with a small nod. She wasn't quite sure what the nod was - unless it was just approval - but that didn't surprise her. Chase and Arlo always seemed to understand each other, even if she and Carter occasionally struggled to figure out what was going through the twins minds, though it was usually the same thing.
Carter watched as Ava and Jace went to go join the squad that was hanging back. The girl would be tough, but the boy didn't seem to be in much of a shape to fight. Hopefully, if it came to that, he'd slow the others down because they had to protect them. He glanced at Chase, his partner in this, and pushed the thought out of his mind. Chase was at his most powerful when Arlo was with him. The twins fed off of each other and energized each other. Splitting them up wasn't a good idea.
"Sam-" he began to warn her about that, but she cut him off with a hand. He rolled his eyes, almost wishing her father hadn't made them partners. At first, he had been happy. They had to be with each other often and she was literally his other half. Unfortunately that also meant she had just as much power over him as he had over her. He did feel a lot more complete, calm even, with her around. He'd felt empty when he thought she died and he knew that was due to whatever her father had done to them.
"It's done, Carter," Sam said with a shake of her head. "You and Chase are here. Arlo and I are going into the city," she said. There was no room for argument and she made that obvious with her tone. "Look, I may have been missing for the past who knows how long, but we both know that I'm still what this group needs." And when she stopped talking, Carter found that he couldn't answer. She was right. She did all the social stuff. All the diplomatic stuff. She worked the people and got them what they needed. Carter was the enforcer.
Sam pulled the other boys in for a hug as Arlo stood a few feet away. "Keep each other safe," she instructed them. She hated to leave so soon after coming back to her boys, but she let go. Chase didn't mind the hug. Chase loved hugs. Carter was glaring at her, though she knew she'd only be in trouble if he'd suddenly developed he power to kill people with a look. Well, it sure looked like that's what he was going for.
"Come on, Arlo," she said, following after Mason and Zero. Arlo silently walked behind her, glancing back at his brother. It felt weird to leave, but Chase was right. If they could split up the other group and learn about them, that would give them an advantage.
"So," Arlo said, looking between their two companions. He wasn't quite sure what to ask at first. Everyone would still be too guarded to actually answer deep questions, but he figured he'd have to make the first move.
He cleared his threat and got Sam's attention, nodding towards Mason. He'd seen him checking her out and that was Sam's specialty. She'd be able to deal with Mason easier than Arlo would and Zero hadn't seemed to have any interest in the girl. She understood all of this and moved to walk next to Mason. "So, Mason, what's your take on all this so far?" she kept her tone casual, though her eyes were on him. She was watching his eyes, his body language. It was all stuff she'd learned when dealing with people and she knew it'd come in handy.
Arlo rolled his eyes as he watched her interact with Mason. He then turned to Zero, hands in his pockets. "Mason's your leader?" he asked, clearing his throat a bit. He didn't talk this much normally. Chase was the talker. "Yeah, Carter is technically our leader, but he's an idiot. So Sam kinda balances him out," he said, leaving out the whole thing of them abandoning Sam because they thought she'd died in the fire. Apparently she hadn't and now here she was, back where she belonged.
Chase watched his brother and friend leave with the strangers and he didn't like it one bit. The strangers couldn't easily overpower Sam and Arlo. They were both decent fighters with decent powers, but who knew what trucks they might have up their sleeves? He shook his head, his eyes darkening as he spoke to his brother. Hey, be careful. I don't like splitting up.
He was answered moments later. You be careful. You and Carter are outnumbered. Just say something if you need me and Sam and I will be right there.
Glancing at Ash and Zeke, Chase fought the urge to smile at his brother's overprotectiveness. Instead he just answered with a silent. Got it. He then turned back to the others just in time to catch Ash's question.
He glanced at Carter and raised an eyebrow but was quickly waved off with a careless hand. It was Carter's way of saying he didn't care. The talking was all up to Chase at this point. Carter didn't want to socialize. And he knew he couldn't without snapping at the other two which would either cause a fight or make him look like the jerk. Sam would be mad at him again. Chase nodded.
"Um, well, we've known each other for a couple years," he began, trying to be careful. He didn't want to betray that they weren't fully human, but he did want to find out if this was Oasis. "Arlo and I had just moved into town and we met Sam and Carter. They were friends," he said simply. That wasn't very far from the truth. They had just moved in after the twins had caused an accident at their old school. Sam and Carter had just made their escape from Hudson Labs and cornered the twins. Carter had threatened them with a knife to hide the two and a beautiful friendship was born. They found out what everyone was and then talked about Oasis. Arlo and Chase believed the rumors were true. So did Sam. Carter didn't, but he tagged along because he knew it was better than being caught by Sam's dad.
"What about you guys?" he asked, glancing at Zeke. The other boy looked a bit odd with the colored hair and eyes, but Chase wasn't about to question it. He'd gotten used to odd eyes with Carter and his icy blue ones and he figured dyed hair couldn't be any weird than twins with weird mind powers. Chase glanced at Ava and Jace and was tempted to have a little fun and mess with the two, but something told him Ava might end up killing him.
And he didn't think Carter would save him.

Mason was unamused by the hugging. He wondered if maybe he should have hugged his people but honestly, he couldn't care less if any of them ended up dead. The people he was surrounded by now, his "allies" in this new strange world, were the exact same ones that were cheering to end his life back in Mors Ubre. So yeah, if any of them were to end up dead, Mason wouldn't care. The only thing he had against them was that he was untouchable -- at least at home and he hoped those ideas would spill over here. After all, he may have been considered Death himself by many, but that didn't mean he wasn't capable of dying. His body was still mortal.
"My take?" He echoed Sam's question, but didn't look at her as he continued walking forward, towards the great city that seemed oddly quiet for being a city of its size. "That this is all insane. I don't know what to think of this, or if any of this is even real." That was how Mason treated everything after being one of Master's pawns for so long. He had woken up in one too many meadows, expecting the best, only to realize that they were being pitted against each other. Or if he stopped moving, the ground under his feet would cave in. He was wondering if perhaps Master had somehow broken through realms and dragged these people from a different one. It seemed logical to Mason, but he also knew that it hadn't happened. Unless... well, that wasn't important. "What's your take? And where are you from?" Maybe she was from their world -- perhaps these people were from Lumine. Mason had never been there, so it would make sense if he didn't recognize them.
Zero shook his head at Arlo's question. "He likes to pretend he's the leader." And no one wanted to beat him down and take the position from Mason. Least of all Zero. He just wanted to keep himself safe and make decisions for himself and Ava. Keep them alive, and attempt to escape the horrors that were their life. Not that it seemed like any of that was at all possible. And now here they were, in this strange new place and Zero had to admit, he was not pleased in the least bit. "Carter is a horrible leader. Too sporadic." Sam seemed like a better choice to him. He had watched enough leaders in his time to know that the calm, calculating ones always were the best. The ones, like Carter, that were easily offended or jumped the gun too soon were the ones that got you into trouble.
Another reason why he allowed Mason to lead them. He had dealt with enough insults in his life that Mason was no longer bothered or put off by any of it.
"Oh," Ash answered. That all seemed so simple, although she didn't know if they were keeping anything from her... which, actually, they probably were, but maybe Ash wanted to see the best in these people. After all, if they were going to have to work together, keeping secrets and fudging the truth was not going to be the way to create a stable friendship, even if it was temporary. "That sounds... nice." And given the fact that most of the people Ash had met were because they wanted to kill her, it did sound lovely and Ash found herself more than a little jealous. Unless, again, they were lying. She glanced at Zeke, meeting his eyes for a moment, and she could tell that he didn't believe any of it, either. Sighing, she looked back towards Chase with a smile, trying to ignore Carter as best she could.
"Umm... long story, I guess." Ash responded. "Jace is my brother, he was a soldier with Zeke, where he also met Zero, Ava, and Mason. And then I met Zeke when the soldiers ransacked our little camp of fugitives and he tried to kill me." That was... the best way to describe how she had met any of them, right? Well, she had actually hidden behind Jace's meeting of them. Otherwise, Ash's were rather... violent.
"Didn't... though..." Zeke pointed out, his voice raspy as he spoke and he did wince a bit this time before touching his fingers to his throat for a moment before relaxing once more and not saying anything past that. The poor guy and his poor throat. He glanced at Carter and Chase. Chase looked easy enough to take, but Carter... not so much. Of course, he was a lot shorter and smaller than all of them, except for Ash, so that made it easier.
Ash rolled her eyes. "Obviously you didn't." She said, looking up at him as she spoke before looking back at Chase because, well, what was the point of trying to talk with Carter? He just looked like he was waiting for the chance to kill all of them, like Ava was. And if Ava got going, Ash had a feeling that Jace, Zeke, and her would also be dead when the others returned. "I was kept and used for stupid maid stuff. And then Zeke helped me escape." And she hadn't seen him since then, so it was nice to see him here, now. Ash remembered everything that had happened... Zeke going down, blood spilling from his throat, but he pushed her away when she tried to stay beside him.
Maybe she had been too open but again, Ash didn't see the point in keeping secrets.

Even if they fought and were constantly arguing, Sam considered Carter and the twins her closest friends. Well, Maya and Quinn could be included, but she was starting to doubt they'd return. If they did, she would definitely hug them. And she had wanted Mason to see that. Yes, they fought, but they liked each other. They had an unbreakable bond from relying on each other to survive. Even Carter needed the other three. He just didn't like to admit it. She gazed up at the large city as they approached it before nodding at Mason's answer. Her eyes went back to him for only a second when she didn't see anything suspicious. Either he wasn't hiding anything or he was good at his body language.
Sam nodded. "Well, I mean, somehow, it has to be real. It can't be a dream or anything if we're all experiencing it." Plus the twins, likely due to their powers, never mixed up reality with dreams or hallucinations or anything. They'd both been a bit freaked out, so she could only assume it was reality. She frowned a bit. "My take?" she repeated his question just like he had done to her and paused. "Well, I almost agree. Everything tells me this is real." At least, the twins' reaction told her it was real. "But logically...." She paused, unsure of how much to admit. She glanced at Arlo, but found him not paying much attention to her. He was talking to Chase as he spoke with Zero. "Well, I think we might be dead." It was the truth. That would trick the twins into believing that it was reality, right? It would be their new reality. "I mean, I got trapped in a fire a few months ago. I remember the smoke choking me and the flames closing in. I told the others to leave and they didn't want to, but they ended up going to save themselves. And then I woke up here." Maybe that's what happened. Carter and the twins had died on their journey and Maya and Quinn were the only survivors.
When he asked where she was from, she shrugged. She opened her mouth to respond, but had a better idea than telling him where they were really from. She glanced at Arlo again. "Oasis. We, uh, we've been doing some work for them out in the real world. So it's been a while since we've been back home," she said, the lie forming easily as she spoke. She shrugged a bit. "Have you ever been to Oasis?" If he had been, he could tell them where Oasis was. It was their goal and had been since the twins had brought the idea up to her and Carter when Carter had threatened them. It had actually been kind of funny. Chase distracted Carter and Arlo had used his mind to pull the knife from the smaller boy's hands. Carter had freaked out.
Arlo nodded a bit. "Who really calls the shots then?" he glanced at Sam. Partly because she was their leader and partly because he knew she'd be working on Mason and getting information from him. If someone else was the leader, maybe she should change her target. Of course, if he just liked to think he was the leader, then maybe Sam would feed his ego and break him down that way. Unfortunately she dealt with guys like that whenever they had something she wanted and it usually consisted of pretending she was impressed by their smooth talking or stupid flirting and then giving them what they wanted. Sam was like a sister to him and he didn't want to see her use those same methods to get what she wanted from Mason. Hopefully she had just misread him and he was actually a very polite and respectful dude. Hopefully they'd be forced to work together and actually establish a shaky friendship. Those were both better alternatives to Sam doing her normal thing.
He nodded at Zero's words. "Carter can be good. He's smart and he has the most street sense out of all of us. He knows how people work and he doesn't back down from a challenge. But he's also an impulsive idiot that's gotten us into trouble too many times. Sam balances him out and they make a good team." Sam was in charge. That became obvious when they lost her. Maya and Arlo had stepped into to replace her. They didn't do as well as Sam had. Then Maya and Quinn went missing and it was up to Arlo to balance out Carter. He sucked at it. That's why he was more than happy to let Sam take her spot back. He perked up a bit at her question about Oasis, but didn't question Zero about it. He'd let Mason answer that one. "How long you guys been working together?"
Chase shrugged. When he heard that Ash was obviously sharing more of her story than he had, he looked at Carter. "Yeah, it was nice. Even if Carter threatened to kill us." Carter's eyes widened and he took a few steps to be at Chase's side. "Arlo talked back to him and Sam practically had to pull him off to keep him from killing him," he laughed a bit. "Then they introduced us to their other friends. They, uh, didn't have families and Arlo and I just kinda ran away with them."
"I had a family," Carter hissed, looking more angry than he had at Mason. If it had been anyone but Carter, there would probably be tears. Carter didn't cry. His blue eyes were trained on Chase, filled with anger.
Chase took a step backwards and raised his hands up in defense. "Look, Carter, you did. And you probably still do somewhere, but do you really want to show your mom who you are today?" he asked. He was referring both to the hardened criminal jerk as well as Carter's new powers.
"You just shut up, Chase. Nobody likes you," he growled, stalking off in a random direction.
Chase watched him go before turning to Ash. "Okay, now can you guys please not kill me?" he asked, his lips twitching into a smile to show that he was making a joke. He was the only one in his group that would joke at a time like this, but he wanted to show them that he didn't mean any harm. He wanted to befriend them. Or, at least have them at allies.
He shook his head and then glanced at Zeke when he spoke. "What's with him?" he asked, referencing his voice and how it seemed to hurt him to speak. "I mean, I would ask him, but it doesn't sound like talking is very easy for him," he pointed out, nodding at Zeke.
While that was going on, he spoke to Arlo. Don't freak out and come back, but Carter left. I brought up his mom and he got mad. Like I said, stick with Mason and Zero, just know that Carter wandered off and so we're both kind of on our own right now.
Arlo clearly wasn't happy and the emotion showed even when he spoke in Chase's mind. Just be closer. If anyone seems to be opening up, befriend them. Chase glanced at Ash. She'd definitely spoken more than the rest of them, but Chase was already planning to work with her.
He listened to the rest of the story with a nod. "So it sounds like your story is a bit more interesting than mine," he said with a laugh. Well, he knew Carter, Sam, Maya, and Quinn were most interesting than him and Arlo, but he didn't need to tell Ash that.

Mason wished that he could just as easily believe that this was reality, but they had faced so many things that hadn't been real. The Dreamscape came to mind -- a dream reality where everyone was connected. Perhaps that was what this was, but it didn't make any sense. There was no way that they all could have ended up here, in a Dreamscape... especially when there were only six chairs and as far as he knew, the Dreamscape had been happily destroyed. The programs in it downloaded into bodies to keep them alive, and then those had been used in the Shadow Realm. Still, he remained cautious and unsure of what was going on. He trusted nothing.
"Dead? Please, we're not dead." Mason would know if they were dead. This had to be some kind of alternate reality. He had been tuned in to everyone's... okay, just his own, death date. Everyone else, well, their death dates weren't as important. Mason still had years of life left, and even now, if he tried to access that, he could tell that he still had years left. This couldn't be death. "Somehow, some magic beings sent us here. It's like another realm." Which for him, was just something that he dealt with seemingly every Monday. "And with every realm, there's a portal and an answer. There's gotta be a way to get back home." Still, he listened in interest to her explanation of how she had died. Interesting, but in Mason's world, death didn't mean much. "Maybe now you're just like a... reanimated corpse. It's common in our world. Do you have a pulse?" That would be a distinguishing factor.
"Oasis? Never heard of it." Well, there went Mason's hopes that they were all from the same reality and that somehow, they had been tricked and ended up here. They had to be from different worlds -- it was the only explanation, although their world was destroyed to the point that if Sam and her gang were from the other side of the world, or even a few hundred miles away, Mason would have no idea. "So your world is... put together, I'm assuming? Not broken and ravaged? Like, you have more than just Oasis and a ton of cities and you can travel between them all?" Hey -- he had to try and piece this all together, and that seemed like a good question.
As they drew closer to the city, Mason paused. For once, he didn't feel anything living inside this city -- there weren't even any lost souls haunting the streets. "That's strange... there's no one here." He murmured. It was sunny out -- bright middle of the day, and yet there was no one. That wasn't normal in the least bit, and now Mason found himself feeling a little more unsettled, although he didn't let that be shown on his face. He had to act as if this was all normal. As if he expected all of this.
Zero finally looked away from Mason's back since, well, that was basically where he had been staring to glare at Arlo. "You can stop with the questions. I know what you're doing, and I'm not going to give you anything to give your dumb little group the upper hand." His voice was still calm, but now it held a sharp edge to it. His visible dark eye, practically black in color, turned back to look at Mason once more. Spending his entire existence expecting the worst from people and also learning how to read others and to not give anything away, even the smallest clues, was aiding Zero now in this conversation with Arlo.
He listened to Arlo's explanation of their group, and that Carter could make an okay leader. That was laughable. Zero could tell that Sam easily had the most control in the group -- it was obvious by everything that she did. "Interesting." He simply responded, not eager to continue this conversation. Plus, they were growing closer to the city, and Zero wasn't seeing any signs of people. "We've been working together for years." Although that was somewhat of a lie. When had he and Mason ever actually worked side by side? The answer was never, but they knew of each other, and Zero had reluctantly listened to some of the things he had ordered. He came to a halt just behind Mason, looking into the abandoned city. He was right -- there was absolutely nothing. Not even a sign of any kind of people.
Ash listened as Chase explained the little thing with how they met Carter and Sam. Perfect! Now everyone was sharing probably way too much, but that was the basis for a healthy friendship, and with everyone else gone, there was no one to stop Ash from sharing too much and becoming friends with the guys in front of her. Or at least, starting up a friendship with them.
Zeke, however, did take on a bit of an offensive posture, moving so his arm was in front of Ash to pull her away if Carter tried to attack. He didn't trust the kid one bit -- he was way too sporadic. Like a firework or something. And it seemed as if Chase had set him off. Zeke relaxed once Carter stalked off in a random direction away from them, and his hand fell away from Ash and back into his pocket. There was no way they could be beaten now. If Chase did decide to attack, they outnumbered him even more now.
Ash smiled faintly and even laughed a little at Chase's joke. She liked him -- he was nice, funny, and the only one that she wasn't worried about. She did cast a little glare at Zeke when he removed his arm from in front of her. Why didn't he believe that she could take care of herself? "Don't worry. We don't know how to kill without a weapon." Ash shrugged, and then hesitated before glancing at Ava. "Well... most of us don't. But we won't. I promise." Killing him would not be a way to get ahead today.
"I don't know if I would say interesting. My story is pretty boring." At least, Ash's story was more boring compared to everyone else. Kidnapping. Angelic usage for Master's purposes. Escaping. Maid. Etc. Boring. And now here she was, in this weird meadow with all of these people that had ruined her life for years, and this also a gang of people that she didn't know or even recognize.
"Well, I don't know if you can see it, but..." Ash turned towards Zeke and rose up on her tippy toes, one hand squeezing his arm for balance while, with the other hand, she pushed his chin up so that Chase could see the thick scar that was still across his throat. "This is why. When he tried to help me escape, umm... the hunters showed up in front of us. One threw a knife and it went right into his throat. All the way through." She explained, swallowing whatever emotion she still felt at what had happened. Ash let go of Zeke and fell back to her feet, looking over at Chase with a shrug. "His throat is damaged, so everything hurts."

Sam had no doubt that this was reality. Not only because of the twins, but because that's all she'd ever faced. It was reality that she realized her father was evil. It was reality when he caught her helping Carter, Maya, and Quinn escape. It was reality when he turned and did his magic on his own daughter. And everything since then had been reality. The actual escape, meeting the twins, the quest for Oasis, the fire... she was still hung up on the fire, on the fact that she'd died. At least, her friends thought she was dead and so had she.
"How do you know we aren't dead?" Sam asked. There was no aggression in her voice. She was purely curious. Everything in her said she was dead. She remembered the heat of the flames. It was so different than Carter. These flames killed. Carter's did too, but not her. She was immune to his flames. When he got too worked up, she was the only one that could touch him and calm him. The flames were uncomfortable, even painful, but the flames themselves couldn't kill her. These flames were natural and completely different. She remembered the smoke choking her. She couldn't breathe. The pain. And then everything was black. She was sure she was dead. "Realm? Portal? Answer? What?" Sam asked, giving him a confused glance. Yeah, Mason must be from a very different world than she was. "Where do you come from?" she asked. When he asked if she had a pulse, Sam hesitated. She hadn't checked. Why should she? "Like a zombie?" she asked, making a face. Quinn had lost control once and brought someone back from the dead, turning them into a zombie. Carter had quickly killed the zombie again and Quinn only healed small wounds since then. But she pressed her fingers to her neck to check for a pulse. She then checked her wrist and thought she'd felt something, but she wasn't sure. "You check," she said, stopping her walking and turning to Mason because Ariat isn't sure if she should have a pulse or not so Mason/Blaze can choose.
Sam nodded when she heard Mason's questions about her world. "Yeah.... um, America. 2017. Have you never heard of it?" she asked. Mason was clearly not from America, and she was beginning to wonder if he was either from some alternate universe or a whole other planet. "We, uh, for the most part, grew up in the normal world. But Oasis.... it's a rumor... we don't know if it even exists and I was hoping you guys had been from there. In fact, I was thinking that this is Oasis," she said, gesturing around them. She paused. "You aren't human," she commented. "And that's what Oasis is for. It's for people that aren't normal..."
Sam frowned when Mason said there no one in there. "How do you know that? I mean, there could be people hidden deep inside. Or creatures that want to kill us," she pointed out. She stopped and looked at him. "Do you want to go in alone or return and grab the rest of our people?" she asked. She planned to let Mason make the decision. After all, of the group banded together, they'd be coleaders and she had to get used to sharing control with someone besides Carter.
Arlo just raised his eyebrows at Zero's accusation. "Look, man. I'm not trying anything. Yeah, I'll take any advantage you might give me, but it looks like we'll be working together," he said, nodding at Sam. "She's trying to work with Mason. And I don't blame her. We're all in a strange world and there's safety in numbers." He stayed calm as he spoke to Zero. He gave no hint that he had learned Carter had left, leaving Chase horribly outnumbered.
Arlo nodded. "I say we just agree that obviously you and your guys know that you're doing. No stranger to killing and fighting, I would guess. Well, it's the same for us. I say we just accept it. We both know what we're doing and it wouldn't be an easy victory for any of us. All it would do is weaken both groups. No benefit from it." Arlo paused, looking up at the great city.
City looks abandoned. Not sure if there's anyone in there, but it's definitely nothing like home. he told Chase. Sam turned to look at him and he nodded. He was passing everything on to Chase. Satisfied, she turned back to Mason.
Chase noticed as Zeke moved his arm in front of Ash. He didn't blame the other dude. Carter... Well, he was normally harmless. When he did want to hurt someone, he was far from harmless. Of course, he hadn't had to deal with a dangerous Carter in a while. He shook his head. "Well, things should be more pleasant now that he's gone," he said, shaking his head. He gave Ash and Zeke a smile.
Chase laughed at Ash's response. "Thanks. I mean, I'm more used to fighting without a weapon anyway." He shook his head. "But thanks for not killing me. I kinda like being alive." He knew he really shouldn't be joking around right now, but he was finally alone. He didn't have Arlo or Carter yelling at him for having a little fun. And Ash seemed to be responding well to it. Friends had to be good in this place, didn't they?
Chase shrugged. "More interesting than mine. Arlo is the only one that did anything vaguely interesting out of the two of us. He's actually the one that agreed to travel with Carter. Recruited him to go find Oasis. I just came along because, well, he's my brother. And, uh, we can't be apart for too long." They did physically weaken when they were separated. Of course, it happened slowly and they were still close enough to be considered together as long as they could talk to one another.
Chase winced when Ash showed him the scar. "Ah, that sounds painful, man," he said, speaking to Zeke this time. "And you didn't die? Huh." He paused and gave Zeke a smile. "Sounds like you're pretty dang tough. Not someone I wanna mess with," he said. As always, his brown eyes were sparkling.
He started to think he was maybe becoming friends with Ash, at least. If he could get on Zeke's good side as well... well, that was a good start.
(I'm sorry this is terrible and short)

Mason smirked at her. "They don't call me death for no reason." He responded, but said nothing more. Let them be a little confused about what he was talking about. A little lost, a little confused -- that was the way to roll with people you didn't totally trust. "Wow, you really don' know anything." He sighed. "What kind of world did you guys come from?" To him, learning about magic had been something that he had learned about when he was young. Well, not too young. He learned about it all when he was a teenager and he was first informed that he would become something amazing which in all reality, was just a reaper. After his reaper powers had fully awoken, it had taken Mason months to finally be able to sleep through the night and ignore the whisperings of the dead in his ears. "Kind of like a zombie... look, in our world, certain people -- when they die -- can be reanimated. Not like a zombie that is going to eat brains or something. But a living corpse. You have your memories and everything, but you don't have a pulse and don't need to eat and stuff." Mason shrugged as if it was a perfectly normal thing. "We call them angels, and demons." He explained, then reached forward and took her hand in his. It was colder than one would expect right now, which to Mason was a warning sign, but it could just be her. He pressed his fingers against her wrist, concentrating for a moment, before he let go. "Yep. No pulse. You're dead." Mason said and then pressed his fingers to his own wrist. After a couple seconds, he felt his pulse. "I still have my pulse."
"America?" Mason's eyebrows furrowed together in confusion for a moment, before his eyes lit back up. "Oh. Yeah, we live in a city that was built in the shambles of America. I don't know what year, though." He explained. As in, the world had been destroyed, and the survivors had rebuilt what they could. "I've never heard of Oasis, but I'm sure it's lovely." Well, looked like that answered his question. "We're from Mors Ubre. There's another big city near us called Lumine... but I'm guessing you haven't heard of either." Wow, this was a horrible mess, and there were still so many unanswered questions. "Not human? Please. I'm as human as they come in our world."
"I would feel the energy and... I don't think there's anything in there." Mason explained as he looked back towards a few of the pristine buildings. It was amazing that they were in this nice of shape. Almost as if they had been built just before everyone had arrived -- built for them, even... "Let's go now. Get this over with. The others will just slow us down." Mason wanted to see what was in there, and he'd happily go in alone if no one else would follow after him. So he started into the city, stepping onto what Blaze is assuming is pavement for the streets of the city.
Zero didn't respond. He trusted none of them and in his opinion, they would be better off without trying to befriend these people that surrounded them right now. Strangers brought nothing but trouble, at least in his experience, so he remained guarded against all of them. And he decided to stop any kind of conversation with Arlo. What can I say? Zero is a difficult nut to crack, preferring to quietly think alone.
He also thought entering this city was a bad idea, but he had no other option except to step into the city after Mason. Part of him fully expected to step onto the pavement and die instantly, although he wouldn't care. And from what he had overheard of Mason and Sam's conversation, dying wasn't an issue here.
Fighting without a weapon... now that worried Ash a little bit. She had only ever learned how to fight with her own weapons, which just so happened to be chakrams -- fancy circles with sharp blades around the edges. And right now, even if they had more numbers than just one Chase, who was to say that he wouldn't be able to take them all done? After all, Ava was the only one knowledgeable in killing without using weapons.
"Why can't you two be apart for too long?" Ash asked. It seemed innocent enough, but she was also curious. Maybe the answer would help her to understand these people. Surely they were also not human, just like the gang that Ash was part of. Their closest things to human were anything but that. No pain, extreme strength and in Mason's special way, ability over death. None of them were normal.
Zeke smiled faintly. "I... did die..." he said, his voice raspy as he replied, but offered no more explanation than that. Of course, his response just gained a sharp glare from Ash, but Zeke didn't care. Hey, these people would find out the truth about all of them one way or another, especially if they were all going to be stuck here in this strange place for what, in Zeke's experience, often meant an eternity. Sometimes literally.
Ash wanted to move the topic away from Zeke's nonsense. "Umm... do you have humanoids in your world? Like... angels and demons? Vampires? Werewolves?" Those had all become increasingly common in their world as the creatures came out of hiding and started to "awaken" as the Society called it.

Sam heard Mason's comment about being called Death and assumed it was just some stupid nickname. If anything, he was probably just a trained killer. Just like Carter had claimed to be before Sam learned he was just an idiot with anger problems that knew how to fight. Though she was still convinced Mason wasn't fully human. None of her friends were. Maybe that's why they were all here. They weren't normal. "What kind of world? A normal world," she said with a frown. "A world where people are human and the dead stay dead." She was thrown off by everything, but she kept a steady expression. She appeared almost emotionless, though it was only to hide the fear and confusion she was experiencing. She listened to his explanation with a slight frown. Zombies were real? "Angels and demons?" she asked. "We have those... Well, sort of. In fiction. Or religion. I mean, you don't see random angels and demons walking down the street." Sam had never been much of a religious person due to her father's strict science only household, but she still knew enough to know that angels and demons should only exist in stories. Fiction stories. Movies. Urban legends. Religion. Not in real life. She found herself holding her breath as Mason took her hand to find her pulse.
He talked so casually, but how? How could being dead be so easy? She took Mason's hand, feeling for his pulse, and dropped it when she felt the boy's pulse. "I'm dead," she repeated, glancing back at Arlo. "I mean, I thought I died, but I figured we were all dead at this point," she said with a frown. "Wait, so does that mean I'm an angel?" She asked. "Or a demon?" That actually sounded pretty cool. "Or is there a way to become one?" she asked. "I mean, if I'm dead anyway... You said the reanimated corpses are angels and demons..."
"Mors Ubre?" Sam asked. "So America really does end up destroyed." Of course she was used to those stupid 'end of the world' claims that popped up every few years. Obviously the world hadn't actually ended if Mason lived in the ruins of America. "Oasis is a rumor. We don't even know if it's real. It's supposed to be a haven for special people." And she left it at that. All four of them were special. They were in danger in the real world and Oasis was the one place they were supposed to be safe.
"Okay, but how human is that?" she asked. "I don't think any of us are 100% human." She didn't outright admit what was special about them, but she had basically admitted that her and her friends were different.
"And you feel energy? Like normally? That's definitely not normal human stuff," she pointed out when he explained why he thought the city was empty. "Whatever. We can figure out each other's secrets later," she said, brushing it off like it was no big deal. She was practically happy to share, as long as Mason shared his secrets too. "But I agree," she said, following him into the city.
Arlo was just watching everything with wide eyes. "You're dead?" he asked, his heart breaking as he watched Sam move, looking so similar to how she had before they lost her.
She didn't even look at him. "Apparently I am. Don't tell Carter or Chase." Carter would feel even worse about himself because he had left her to die and Chase... well, Chase had never been very good at dealing with death. "Plus, that means Maya and Quinn might return anyway," she pointed out.
Arlo shrugged as he entered the city behind her and Mason. He'd given up on trying to talk to Zero.
Of course, Carter had taught all his friends how to fight. He'd been in plenty of good old fashioned fistfights. You couldnt always rely on weapons. Of course, the four of them also had powers to aid them. Carter normally had his knife on him, but who really needed a knife when he could just burn somebody? And Chase was assuming their powers worked since he could still talk to Arlo. He just assumed everyone else in here knew how to fight without weapons. What if that's what this was? A fight to the death? Well, he wasn't going to attack anyone yet.
"I have no idea," Chase said in response to Ash's question. It was the truth. Yes, he knew it had something to do with their powers and how they were connected, but he had no idea why they were born that way. "We get sick when we're apart for too long. Really weak too. We haven't been apart since we were like ten," he said, looking into the direction his brother had disappeared too." Carter would probably tell him to stop talking but Carter wasn't here. He looked at Ash. Maybe they weren't human either. "Can we, uh, talk alone?" he asked, mostly looking towards Ava and Jace. He wasn't sure if they could hear the pair but he was definitely more concerned about them than Zeke.
Zeke's claim about dying made Chase even more sure that they weren't human. "How are you here then?" he asked. He looked between Zeke and Ash. If they were immortal... we'll, that would definitely not be good. He thought about Sam. Could she have really died? What if they were all dead. Maybe when he, Arlo, and Carter had fallen asleep, one of their enemies had finally caught up with them and killed them all in their sleep. The rebought made him feel sick.
Chase shook his head at Ash's question. "Those are all fictional creatures," he said, but he began to wonder if maybe something was off. "Wait, are you guys from America? From earth?" he asked. He paused. "I guess this isn't Oasis then." Fighting back his fear, he went back to Ash's question. "No," he said, hesitating before adding the next part. "Most people are normal, though some are a bit... odd." He didn't want to be the one that blew their secret, but if eh got Ash to admit that they weren't human...
"I think we should talk in private," he said again. It'd be easier to get her to admit it and then he'd feel more comfortable admitting it as well. "Still where your friends can see us because I'm sure none of you totally trust me yet..."
***
"Maya?" Quinn frowned, blinking his eyes open. He reached out for the girl that normally fell asleep beside him. He felt the absence of her warm body and frowned. They weren't a couple anymore, but they'd almost acted like one since they got separated from the rest of the group. Sleeping together provided warmth and safety and they were the only one the other hand. With no way to contact their friends, they'd been surprised they'd survived on their own so long.
"Maya!" Quinn called again, sitting up. He was asleep in the woods, though he could see an open meadow not too far away. Maya rushed back into the woods, signaling for him to be quiet.
"What's going on?" Quinn asked, climbing to his feet. They'd been in Chicago last night, hadn't they? Quinn had scammed a dude out of his car thanks to a few tricks Carter had taught him. He was pretty certain that he and Maya had taken it somewhere quiet and fell asleep. Why were they in the woods now?
Maya shook her head. "I'm not sure, but I saw two other people asleep," she said. She took Quinn by the hand, signaled for him to be quiet, and led him to the smaller clearing deeper in the woods where she had spotted the other two.
Quinn pulled away from Maya and approached the nearest person, shaking her shoulder. "Hey?" he asked quietly. He looked over to see Maya reaching for the gun she kept on her. She had never used it, but she was clearly worried about Quinn. When she found it missing, her green eyes widened and she shook her head. Quinn needed to get away from them.

Mason couldn't believe that the world they came from seemed so normal. It had become a norm to be surrounded by the creatures that were "awakened" by the Society, or so that was the term that had been coined by them when the first batch of them had started showing up. "The dead stay dead? Well that's just no fun." He responded as if the dead coming back was a totally normal thing which for him, it was. It happened seemingly every day. Mason had seen a million horrific things, so the dead coming back was probably the easiest he had ever had to deal with. "No angels or demons? What do you have walking down your streets? Normal humans?" It was a joke, but a stupid joke at that when the answer was more than likely yes, that was all they had.
"You are neither, which is confusing. Usually when you die, in our world, anyway, you stay dead unless a reaper chooses to bring you back. Then, you're either an angel, or a demon." Permanent death existed in their world, but it had grown increasingly uncommon. Most people found that they had a second chance, because they possessed the necessities to come back as an angel or demon. It had resulted in a world where everyone had more guts, violence was more common, and murder felt like nothing.
"Well, we are from very different realities." Mason grumbled. Great. So this was some kind of inter-dimensional place that they had all been forcefully sucked into. Great. "Although yours sounds perhaps a little more pleasant than the one we're from." To say he was jealous was a bit of an understatement. Mason hated his reality, the world that he had been born into, and he wanted nothing more than to be free of it. Although he supposed that this world would be a beautiful break from his own world, and that was good.
He ignored her comments about him not being human. Mason liked to pretend that he was normal since for his entire life, he had been told that he wasn't normal and that was a monster. "Look, don't question me right now. There's nothing living in this city, but it's in great condition." It was crazy to him, this world that they had been sucked into. He looked at the buildings as they started walking through, amazed by how beautiful and nice each one was. It was as if this city had been waiting for people to inhabit it.
Mason looked back at Arlo. "It's just death. What's the big deal?" He didn't understand, and probably for logical reason. It was such a normal thing in their time that their worry and not wanting to share it with the others didn't make any sense to Mason. "You're still you. Just... your body is dead."
"Mason, shut up." Zero snarled. He could understand their problems with this. Mason had never lost someone he had cared about because, well, he didn't have anyone he cared about and to him, death and life were the same thing. But to these people... they weren't. And he understood that. When he had lost Kiana, it felt as if his entire world had come crashing down around him. And in some way, that was probably what Arlo and even Sam were going through. Death wasn't as simple as Mason made it out to be.
"Look. I've seen some weird stuff in my time, and this... city. With all of us sitting just outside its border. Doesn't it seem as if maybe this city was almost built for us?" Zero wasn't sure how much what he said made sense, but he spoke, anyway, and hoped that everyone understood him. "Maybe it's like the Shadow Realm or Eden and this is just another mind game between our worlds' leaders. Some kind of experiment to see what we do in a situation like this." He wouldn't put it past Master to do something like this.
Ash hesitated, unsure of how to respond to his question. Being alone with Chase would probably be dangerous, but she felt as if she didn't have any other options. She looked at Zeke, and his expression was dark. He didn't want her to go, probably for obvious reasons, but she just faintly smiled at him and gently touched his arm with her fingers. "Zeke, I'll be fine. You'll still be able to see me, alright? Just wait right here." She told him, her voice low so that Ava and Jace couldn't hear about what she was planning.
She gestured for Chase to follow after her, and then started walking away, expecting Chase to follow after her. Once they were just out of earshot from her group of her friends, she turned to look at Chase, her arms crossed over her chest as she looked up at him. "We're here because in our world... there's some different laws, especially when it comes to the difference between life and death." Ash didn't know how else to explain it without giving away too much.
"We're from Mors Ubre, which I think was built on the remains of America? I don't know. History was never my strong point." Ash admitted. "What are you, then? If the humans in your world are odd, what is so odd about you and your friends?" She felt uncomfortable admitting anything else about herself, and her group. She glanced back towards Zeke, who was still watching, his muscles tense. She knew that if Chase did anything even remotely worrisome, Zeke would be over in a flash to try and protect her from him.
--
Zia's eyes fluttered open. She remembered falling asleep in the woods, but this was... different from the forests in the Shadow Realm. She started to sit up slowly, but then her eyes fell on the two strangers. Panicked, she started to scoot backwards until she bumped into something, which when she looked down, she was relieved to find that it was her little sister, Rose. Her eyes quickly flicked back to the two strangers.
Rose let out a grunt as Zia bumped into her. She blinked open her own eyes, which were a bright red color, and glared up at her sister. "What the heck is going on?" She asked as she sat up, glaring first at her sister and then following her stricken gaze to look at the strangers.
"Oh..." Rose murmured. As she started waking up more, the mind reading came natural and started to poke around in Zia's mind. She could feel the heightened emotion and worry that her sister felt, and it started to rub off on Rose, but she managed to push away those false feelings. Rose had learned how to stop others' feelings from affecting her as much, and that was needed right now.

Sam nodded. "Well, I mean there's stories about ghosts haunting places. But, yeah... For the most part, dead people are forever dead. Never coming back." She glanced at Arlo with the last sentence. He still looked as if he couldn't believe Sam was dead. He'd be back to his normal self soon. Hopefully. He had always been better at dealing with death than Chase, but apparently he didn't know how to react when he saw someone he was sure was dead, thoughts she was alive, found out she was dead, and then hung out with her. She nodded seriously at Mason's question. "Yeah. Well, I wouldn't say normal." Arlo's eyes widened, not sure if telling Mason what they were would be a good idea. "Some people are really weird. But humans. Yeah. We got a lotta humans."
Sam nodded. "So, I'm just a zombie. Well, a zombie that can talk and think and doesn't eat brains? Good, cause I'm not sure anyone here has any..." It was a joke, but not a very good one. "What does that mean for when we get out of here? If we get out of here? Will I go back to being dead or will I get a second chance?" She looked at Arlo again, but his face betrayed nothing.
Sam nodded. "We, uh, definitely had our problems but it wasn't horrible," she said with a shrug. Well, it was pretty darn good for normal humans. Being hunted for what they were put a bit of a damper on Sam's life back there. "But yours sounds a lot more interesting." Interesting was a fairly neutral world. It could be good or bad.
Sam nodded. "Well, we should make sure it isn't gonna kill us and then maybe leave a message in the meadow for any new arrivals and we can move into the city? It has to be better than the the meadow..." Sam pointed out. Who knew what the night would be like?
Arlo frowned at Mason's comment about death. "Were from two very different places," he commented, glancing at Sam. He scooted closer to her, glaring at Mason. "Where we come from, death is bad. Death is the end. You'll never see that person again. And it's even harder when they have a painful death..." he looked over at Sam. Being caught in a fire was supposed to be painful, wasn't it? He just shook his head at Mason's description of Sam. It was her, just in a dead body. It wasn't right. Wasn't natural.
Arlo looked over in surprise when Zero spoke out against Mason. He gave the other boy a half smile before looking back at Mason. Zero must've lost someone too. Mason couldn't have a reaction like that to death if he'd never lost someone. He still looked at Sam as if he were unable to believe she was back. Besides Chase, she was his best friend. And she was a close second. Even above Carter. Sam was just more likable.
Sam nodded at Zero's words. It was clear none of them were normal, so was this really out of the ordinary? "I think you might be right." She frowned slightly at the comment about it being due to their world's leaders. "Maybe your leader, but I don't know who would pick us to come. So I don't think it was our worlds leader or we wouldn't be here." She frowned. "The only one that would send us here specifically is my father but he has no belief in magic. Unless this all has some scientific explanation, there's no way he did it."
Arlo tensed up at the mention of Dr. Hudson. He was a bad man. A scary man. And he knew Sam still held a grudge at him for ruining her life and Carter's life and Maya's life and Quinn's life. Unlike the twins, those four were born normal.
"Don't worry, man. I'm smart enough to see that I'm outnumbered." He reminded Zeke. Of course, that didn't necessarily help Ash. He knew that hurting or killing her would be met with his own demise at the hands of her friends, but would they be quick enough to save Ash? He wasn't sure and he had no plans to find out.
He followed Ash away from the group, staying silent until they were far enough away to speak. Chase nodded at Ash's explanation. "Life and death..." he repeated before pausing. "Does hat mean you're all dead?" he asked, crossing his own arms over his chest and looking down at Ash. He glanced at Zeke occasionally to make sure the other boy wasn't preparing to attack him.
Chase nodded. "I've never heard of that. So you guys are definitely from far into the future." He sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. "Well, I think we need to establish some trust here and I'll be the first to go out on a limb and admit everything. Carter would surely kill me if he was here and I don't think Sam and Arlo will be pleased, but we need to have trust to work together and I hope you'll trust me enough to tell me what you all are."
He paused and spotted a flower a few feet away. He concentrated on it and watched as it floated into the air and came to a stop so it was floating right in front of Ash's face. "We all... well... Most of them were born normal. Carter, Sam, Quinn, Maya... They're artificial. They were born normal until Sam's dad went crazy. Gave hem all powers. Arlo and I, we were born with it. That's why we can't be apart. We have some sort of mental link, and other cool mind powers." He nodded at the flower floating in between them. It dipped slightly as he broke concentration, but then he got it right at face level for Ash.
***
Quinn's eyes widened when the strangers woke up. He glanced at Maya. His friend was pale as she hugged a tree and stared at the two girls. He waved his hand at Maya and she finally left the safety of the tree to stand beside Quinn.
Quinn approached the girls with Maya a step behind them and offered a hand to help them up. He clearly wasn't as guarded as the rest of his group. "Hey," he started, watching them. "I'm, uh, my name is Quinn. That's Maya." He nodded at her.
"Do you guys know where we are?" Maya asked suddenly. Her voice shook, betraying her fear, but she didn't care at this point. "I swear we fell asleep in the middle of Chicago last night..."
"Not the middle," Quinn corrected. He frowned.
Maya shook her head. Not the time to argue about geography. She looked at the two strangers. "We just need to know where we are and how to get home."

Mason rolled his eyes. "Ghosts are so annoying. Angry spirits that have unfinished business and all that." He grumbled, then looked at her when he realized what she'd said. "Wait, those are just stories, too? Really?" It felt as if every story or myth in their world was reality in his. Mason didn't know what to think of this, plus it was just annoying that in some world, they could have a normal, relaxed life. "Alright, well what's so weird about your humans? Four arms? Three eyes? What?" He figured they had shared enough about the crazy parts of their world that they might as well share some information about their world. That was how trust was built, although Mason didn't think he could ever truly trust these people. Not at least until he understood them better.
The joke was stupid to Mason, and he made no comment about it. "Zombie, huh? Now that's a myth in our world. No zombies. Not sure how I like it." He admitted. Finally, something that was just a story in his world as well as hers. "I don't know. If you're alive here and there was no intervention, as far as I can tell, I would say this place has some kind of... different rules on life and death. Like in a way, we're immortal." Of course, that didn't help at all with what would happen to Sam if she was to return to their world, although Mason suspected the worst.
"Well we aren't dead yet, so I'm gonna say we're good." Mason said, glancing around at the city that so far, seemed perfectly safe. Plus, it didn't seem as if they had to worry about dying if Sam had apparently been dead, and then come back to life. There were a lot of unanswered questions still, though.
Zero shook his head. "Look, let's head back and get everyone. We're all probably tired and hungry, and maybe we can find rations and somewhere safe to spend the night." He said, although Blaze is thinking it's probably still not getting very late, but Zero liked to be super prepared.
"So we have no idea who would have sent us all here." Mason commented. If they didn't have anyone that would use magic to get them here, Mason gave up on the idea of this being a prank pulled by Master. There had to be some bigger, better explanation, but Mason figured right now wasn't the time to be worrying about it. "Yeah, I agree. Let's go get everyone and decide what to do from there."
"Umm... not all of us." Ash started to explain. It was difficult, to say the least, to make sense of everything that they had been put through. "Just me, Zeke, Jace, and then Zeke's sister, Zia. I don't think there's anyone else that is considered dead." Well, that she could think of off the top of her head, anyway. And even for them, most of their deaths had been chosen -- to awaken their powers. Being alive had meant no wings or angelic or (in Zeke's case) demonic powers. That was why Jace had chosen to, but Ash wasn't sure about the rest of them.
Ash on the other hand... well, she hadn't been given a choice.
She definitely had to agree that they all needed to learn to gain some trust between each other, so Ash wasn't afraid to share the truth of what they were. Of course, she knew that no one would be pleased with her sharing their weaknesses, but... this was a different world. And they needed to learn how to survive, all of them, together. Who knew if the laws here were different? Maybe Ash wasn't even considered dead here.
Mind powers had not been what she was expecting, nor the explanation that Chase gave her. She looked at the flower, her eyes wide as she watched it floating in the air. "Now that is cool..." she whispered and reached out, hesitantly touching it with a finger. "So, being born with powers is... rare? Having powers is rare?" She asked, her blue-green eyes turning from the flower to look at Chase.
--
Rose couldn't sense any misgivings about these two strangers, so she happily took Quinn's hand, smiling as she stood up, and started brushing the dirt from her clothes. Zia, on the other hand, was still nervous and stood up without any help, standing just behind her sister.
"Nice to meet you! I'm Rosemary, but everyone calls me Rose. And this is Zia, my sister." She smiled brightly, tucking a strand of black hair behind her ear as she did so. Rose hesitated, realizing that this was not where they had been the night before, nor had she been with Zia.
"Umm... well, we've never heard of... Chicago." Rose admitted, although her eyes were still looking around at all of the scenery. "And this is nothing we're familiar with..." She grinned and walked up to the nearest tree, laying her hand against it. "Zia! Look! This tree is normal. Like, it doesn't glow and it feels normal."
Zia remained silent, watching her sister closely as she glanced back at these strangers. She had learned to trust no one. Once, she had been much like Rose -- trusting, bright, bubbly, but now, she was reserved and quiet, hidden away in a shell. At some point, Zia swore she had even forgotten how to speak.
Rose rolled her eyes at her sister's silence. "I have no idea where we are, or how to escape!" She admitted brightly, then hesitated for a moment. "Although... there's probably other people nearby! We should find them and maybe we'll get some answers." Of course, there was the question of which direction to go in.

Sam nodded. "Are ghosts like..." she puse and tried to figure out the best way to word her question. "Like, are they real? I mean some people believe in them in my world and some don't. Do all people in your world believe in them? Are they like proven real? Normal?" she asked. Sam shook her head. "Our humans are pretty normal for the most part," she said, looking over at Arlo for his input on the issue.
Arlo just gave a shrug. "You're the one that talked about people being weird. You're the one that has to explain it," he said. Sam raised an eyebrow, and Arlo just chuckled. "Hey, you might've died, but not you're alive again. Chase is the one that gives into you, not me," he pointed out. He was a lot tougher than Chase, which kind of concerned him about his twin being left alone with the others. You good? he asked, his eyes darkening for a moment as he shared the thought with his brother.
Sam rolled her eyes at Arlo and turned back to Mason. "Well, most people really are normal besides a couple people that do weird things. But, um, I'm not sure about any supernatural or fantasy creatures, but some people have powers. Some are natural and some are artificial, but that's definitely not a norm. In fact, having powers makes you an instant enemy of like everyone."
Sam nodded. "We don't have zombies, but they're huge in fiction. And people like the idea of a zombie apocalypse for some odd reason," she said with a frown. "Immortal," she repeated, glancing at Arlo. The only time she'd seen anything similar to immortal was when Quinn brought that dude back to life. It was not good. Carter killed the zombie like version of him and Quinn was knocked out for a few days straight she to the amount of power it had taken.
Sam nodded. "Well, we know entering the city doesn't kill us, so we should probably eat everyone," she agreed. She turned around, glancing at Zero and Arlo before heading black in the direction of the meadow.
"Yeah!" Arlo agreed, his eyes lighting up. He hated being away from Chase, even if this wasn't bad enough to affect them negatively. "I wanna make sure Chase didn't screw anything up."
"Carter's the one we need to worry about," Sam pointed out with a laugh. "He's probably trying to pick a fight while Chase is holding him off," she pointed out. Yeah, she didn't trust Chase or Carter alone, but she trusted them together. They balanced each other out, just not as well as Sam balanced Carter our.
Sam frowned. "I'm sure we can figure it out, but our first priority should definitely be getting through the night. Do we want to go into the city and find a building to spend the night, or the meadow?" she asked.
Chase nodded with a slight frown. "Well, we were alive... I don't know if maybe we al had to die to wake up here, but o hope not..." he said with a frown before thinking about Sam. "If you guys were dead... Well, Sam, the girl, we thought she died because we left her in a burning building and when she appeared today I thought maybe she escaped the building... Maybe she was dead after all." He didn't like to think about that and knew Carter would like it even less. "And our other friends - Quinn and Maya. They disappeared one night and we don't know what to think. I just hope they appear here too."
Chase watched her react to the flower. At least she was weird too, just like him. Otherwise he would've expected her to run away screaming. But they were freaks too. They were like him, maybe even weirder. He found himself smiling as he plucked the flower out of the air and smelled it.
He nodded. "Rare, as far as I can tell. But we also keep it secret. I mean, were on the run from the government because they know about people like us. We're on the run from Sam's dad because he created most of us and wants us back... Plus people don't like it when something isn't normal. We're not normal." He frowned as he received Arlo's message.
Fine is all he responded with, his eyes turning darker for only a second. He nodded. "We don't know why, but Arlo and I were born with our powers. The others were given theirs by Sam's dad. And that's why we can't be apart. We have some kind of link and it makes us physically sick and weak to be apart for too long. And we can talk. In our heads. I've been taking to Arlo since they left for the city," he admitted.
***
Quinn smiled when Rose took his hand. He let go once she was up and glanced at Maya. He didn't push with Zia, not wanting to scare her off. That's as Carter's job. Quinn and Maya were actually a very unintimidating pair on their own. They'd actually done quite well without Carter and Arlo and even Sam scaring people off.
"Nice to meet you guys," Quinn said, running a hand through his hair. He glanced over at Maya again, waiting for her to speak up. He didn't want to be the only vocal one here and he knew she was perfectly capable of speaking.
"You've never heard of Chicago?" Maya asked with a frown. "Are you american? It's a huge city in Illinois..." she said with a shake of her head. Well, maybe they were British. Or Australian. Or something. She didn't really care at this point. She was just weirded out by this thing. At the tree comment, she shared a weird look with Quinn. "Where do you com from that trees glow?" she asked. Some mushrooms glowed, at least that's what she heard in biology class, but she'd never heard of glowing trees.
Quinn just sighed and ignored the weird comments the girl made. "I agree. We should check it out. But we should stick together. Safety in numbers, right?" he asked, his muscles tensing slightly as he heard a notice. He shook his head and adjusted his glasses.
"Um, let's head south?" he suggested. Except he wasn't really sure where south was...
(Should the meadow become dangerous at night to drive them into the city? Plus that could be when the is portal opens to let people into the world and some creature keeps them from escaping?)

((Kind of want them to be walking through the city. And then Drake pops up. XD And he's just like "Wow, it's about time you all woke up. I've been waiting for days."))
Mason shrugged. "Ghosts are just angry spirits. Like, the ones that have unfinished business. And no one can see them, except for very specific people. Like Rose." He looked over his shoulder to Zero. "Hey, Rose can see ghosts, can't she?" He had never talked to the girl much, but he was certain he remembered hearing about something like that happening long ago in her past. "Anyway, not everyone believes in them."
"Yeah, she can see ghosts. And talk to them. Her best friend is Calen, and I've heard he's a ghost." Zero responded, hid tone of voice making it seem as if it was the most natural thing in the world. His visible dark eye turned away from Mason to look at Arlo, and then Sam.
Mason was suspicious to say the least. "And I'm assuming that you all have some kind of powers, right?" He asked, his voice betraying the suspicion that he felt. "I mean, you don't exactly seem normal." Even if he couldn't tell anything right off the bat, Mason had his misgivings about them.
Zero, on the other hand, narrowed his dark eye as he looked at Sam. "And if Carter actually attacks or hurts any of our people..." he didn't finish off the sentence, because it would probably be obvious enough. Zero would easily kill all of them without a single regret.
"Yeah, let's go back and get the others. Maybe some of them woke up." Mason suggested as he started back towards the meadow, where everyone was waiting.
Ash felt sick to her stomach at the idea of everyone here being dead. She knew that as an angel, they could still die and if she was killed again, that would be the end. A body could only be reanimated once. "I think our version of death is different than your version." She murmured. "So... maybe there's a different explanation, and none of us are dead?" She suggested, although it seemed like a shot in the dark. There was no good explanation for what was going on. "Umm... should we look around for your other friends, perhaps?"
"So the world is against you." Well, there was at least something that they had in common. Their government also hated anyone special, although Ash had been turned into an angel in order to work for that exact same government. It was a strange choice, but Ash had never questioned it. "So are none of you normal?" She asked. Did they all have powers? And would they use the powers against them?
Ash wasn't terribly perceptive, so she definitely didn't notice that brief moment when Chase's eyes turned darker. Plus, she was thinking far too much about this. "Mind powers... that's really cool. And a little strange that you and Arlo were born with them, and everyone else had to be... changed to have the powers." And it was such a strange idea. Science causing powers... that was what it would be.
--
"Well we definitely do not have a Chicago... or an Illinois." In fact, Rose had never heard of either, and the confused look on her face showed that. The confusion fell away as Rose started smiling at their question. "A horrible land. It's a little weird. Very... magical, and there is a lot of things that are just downright horrible. Such as the glowing trees in the Shadow Realm, which is where we were locked away."
"Right, Zia?" Rose looked to her sister with a smile, but Zia's eyes just widened as she dipped her head a bit more, hair falling in her eyes. Zia didn't trust any of this. Rose just rolled her eyes at her sisters reply. "Anyway, yes, safety in numbers and all that and you people seem wonderful."
"South is a horrible idea. There's no one." Rose hesitated, feeling out with her mind for any people, and then her red eyes turned towards the north. "That way. I feel minds."
"Don't say that... it makes people scared of you." Zia whispered.
