so i had an idea for a story a while back that explored the relationships in a friend group (mine), the process of change, the realization that change happens, and how a metaphorical journey can manifest literally.
The plot is simple, its starts out as a friend group in college with their own lives and problems, who a while into the book hope on a bus/rv and take a roadtrip up through the midwest into canada during a break. During the trip its focused on info about each character, how they interact and affect eachother. and the changes in outlook of each character both about other characters and their own lives. Each character needs to grow, and makes steps toward doing so. The problem is, im having trouble figuring out how to introduce things naturally, with actual consistent characterization, and putting in elements of the roadtrip that test the characters that are interesting and fresh. I know theres a few honesty hour scenes, a bar/hookup scene, maybe a fight, but not what else really. can someone help me make this interesting and believable? Or just give me writing tips in general?
for reference the characters who go on the bus include a severely depressed main character (morgan) whos botched most of college and is trying to figure her stuff out, and everyman best friend character (liz) who has a lot of innocent crushes and is really really awkward and unsure of herself, a roommate/cool girl character (Kateri) who's implied had an eating disorder and was assaulted earlier in the year and now has lots of s*x, a joking and self deprecating dude )Chris) who is sarcastic to hide his feelings and self hatred but has crushes on like everyone involved, a couple: a normal girl (caiti) who acts as a caregiver to the rest of the group and a childish but very caring guy (Derek) who is the heart of the group, and a nerdy guy (John) who acts really christian and rational but is quite immature, the object of both main character and best friend characters' affections. I need one more dude character too but im having trouble getting him h e l p

I feel one really good trick to writing believable characters is to find typical character personalities or tropes, and add meaning to those. For example the 12 common archetypes of character are extremely simple character shells. But it still makes their motivations, flaws, and strengths know. Despite the characters being simple, you could give meaning to their simple actions. Everyone does everything for a reason, even if they don't know it. The "everyman" could be the "The Orphan" archetype. He's gunny and has crushes, but he's also desperate to be accepted into a larger, which is why he's unsure of himself.
The eating disorder girl? She's an "Explorer". Because of her trauma, she feels trapped in herself. She can't stand to think about anything for too long, so she starves herself to feel pain and not think. It's a very simple thing to do, but it can give a lot of depth to simple character shells.
Hope this helps!
