The City of Iron
The mist wraps heavily around you as you make your way down the iron streets of Thermopylae, your feet clacking gently with every movement. The constant clacking of gears is barely audible here, the low chatter of people filling up the space it leaves. The air is thick, lined with smoke that tickles at the back of your throat. Around you, you can only faintly see the forms of other pedestrians, pressing handkerchiefs to their faces as they quickly make their way to their destinations under the watchful eyes of clockwork guards. You shuffle past these as well, offering a small nod to the machines that keep your city safe- or at least try to. Very few things are safe these days…

R.U.S.T.
“Ah, you must be one of the potential recruits. Come in, come in. We have much to cover, and not much time to discuss it. My name is Athena. What, you're used to that being a female name? Well, it’s more ceremonial than anything. Each of R.U.S.T.’s leaders has adopted the name of a Greek deity as a sort of identity for themselves. We can’t just trust that all of our recruits are genuinely interested in joining as opposed to scouting information for the Council. Not to say you’re one of these sellouts. We just can’t be too cautious.
“So, I suppose the first question you’ll ask is ‘What exactly is R.U.S.T.?’. It’s a popular choice, to be certain. Well, the acronym itself refers to the Rebellion for the Unification and Safety of Thermopylae. We’re an undercover resistance group, working to destroy the corrupt council. That, in most basic terms, is our mission- eliminate the Council, and bring our own system into power.
“We have to remain undercover due to the Council’s… extreme reactions to resistance. If they knew who all our members were, we’d all be dead in a week. You probably know a few of our members, although I’m certain you’d never have guessed it. As of right now, we operate out of a developed base in the city’s sewer. Oh, don’t worry. I’m perfectly fine sharing that information with you, considering the Council already knows it. They’ve sent patrol after patrol down searching for us., but never find us. We’re hidden quite well, despite our limited supplies. The base itself is rather large, but most members live in their own homes as opposed to staying inside the base. This way, they seem less suspicious when they go on missions outside the base. I’m one of the few who do make a home there, as there isn’t much left for me up here. R.U.S.T. is my job now.
“Speaking of our members, we call them the Hestians. While the 13 leaders of R.U.S.T. each adopt the name of a primary Greek deity, our followers are named after Hestia- equal in power but without a throne, tending the fires of our organization. It’s rather poetic, don’t you think? Anyways, the members of our organization are extremely important to the ultimate success of R.U.S.T.. There are three types of Hestians- Active, Passive, and Consultant. Active Hestians go out into the field with our leader, donning masks to hide their identity while stealing equipment or sabotaging Council operations. Passive Hestians work inside the organization, helping sort equipment brought in by the Actives and assisting with the medbay and other internal organizations. Consultants help the leaders of R.U.S.T. plan where and when to strike based on information they have learned and our current need. They often double as Passives or Actives as well.
“And that’s our organization, simple as that. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to ask them now.”

The Corruption
"How is the government corrupt, you ask? Tsk. All the civilians of the world are so naive. All you have to do is look past their glittering surface. Go to the slums of Tartarus, to the areas of the city near factories that are slowly dying due to pollution. The council doesn’t care about the people. They only care about the industries, the money-makers. It’s revolting. They don’t pay attention to the horrible air quality, to the decay in small businesses, to the often corrupt and manipulative ways the larger industries treat their employees. As long as they’re getting their money, they don’t care what others go through. There are only 4 council members, one holding more power than the other three. This already small sampling of our populace is even more selective because only wealthy citizens can afford to run for election. As such, they provide a bias sampling of citizens that the common people can never hope to reach. Even though some may argue that the people elect our council members, you must keep in mind that they serve until death before their position is open for re-election. Just because a member was right for us 10 years ago doesn't mean their views are still accurate today. The people don't get any say in what bills are passed either! All our laws are drafted and approved by the same 4 council members, who clearly aren't taking appropriate actions to assist their people. On top of this, any who dare speak out against the council are brutally silenced, often by life imprisonment or public executions, as has been the case for several of our members. This blatant disregard for what the populace thinks is the exact reason why we cannot allow the council to remain in operation for much longer. This is why R.U.S.T. was created- to destroy this corrupt, bias, unjust way of thinking.
"Now, of course R.U.S.T. doesn't plan to destroy the government without having their own system to replace it. I've thought long and hard on the matter, and have created a system which, I believe, fixes everything that is wrong with the Council. First and foremost, the Assembly- that's what we're calling it-will be entirely self-sufficient, not relying on the support of businesses but rather wisely using revenue gained from taxes and the like to fund behaviors. This way, there would be no possibility of twisted motives- the Assembly would simply do what is best for the people. The proposed Assembly has 13 members, none having more power than the others and all working in specifically designated areas. Candidates for these positions do not have to pay for a campaign, as the government would subsidize most electoral campaigns to make sure all are represented equally. Assembly members would be re-elected every 5 years, with a maximum service of 10 years. Assembly members draft bills on their specific matters, then present them to the rest of the assembly for approval. If the assembly agrees on the bill, then it is presented to the public for approval via voting. In this way, we assure that the public agrees with every step we take. In addition, the assembly would allow open debates on views, as well as hold public discussions every fortnight where citizens can raise any concerns directly to the assembly. In this way, citizens can raise their voices and be heard, and we as the governing body will be able to take their criticism and build off of it.
"Of course, we have people serving in these positions currently. These are the leaders of the rebellion, including myself. When the day comes that we overthrow the Council, however, we will immediately hold a vote to verify these people. We wouldn't want to force the citizens into something they don't want, and if they have better candidates for the roles, we will accept your decisions.
"In the end, it's your choice, of course. Whether to join us or not. But know full well that we will not rest until we earn you civilians back the privileges you rightfully deserve, to bring this decaying city back to its previous splendor. This is our fight. This is what we put ourselves through for you.
"Think it over. We'll be waiting."

Thermopylae
The city of Thermopylae is a tightly packed city forged of iron and copper. Named after the area of Greece known as the entrance to Hades, it certainly isn’t difficult to draw comparisons between the two. Thermopylae is crowded, dark, and the air of the lower sectors is filled with pollutants. Many walk the streets covering their mouths with handkerchiefs to filter the air, and most try to avoid taking the streets at all. Although the city gleams from a distance, it isn’t by any means a good place to live. There are four main sectors of Thermopylae- Tartarus, Asphodel, Elysium, and the Isles of the Blessed. Tartarus is by far the worst of these, housing slums and extremely crowded- but cheap- living conditions. It lies in the shadow of the two large factories that dominate Thermopylae, and the air quality there is so poor most residents have a shorter life expectancy. Asphodel is where most of the middle class citizens live, and while the quality of housing is certainly better, the area still leaves much to be desired. Many businesses locate themselves here, as it is accessible both to the lower class citizens as well as the more privileged citizens. Elysium is where wealthy citizens call home, and it is on this level that the air begins to clear, at least somewhat. People still don’t roam the streets for fun, but they can at least take a short trip without covering their faces. The housing is nicer too, of course. The Isles of the Blessed are where the Council members and their families call home, as well as the location of most governmental buildings. Still, even they have faint traces of the thick polluted mist from the lower levels. R.U.S.T.’s base is located in the sewer system below the streets. It is accessible from any point, but depending on where you enter the sewers you may have to walk for a longer time to reach it. The entrance to the base is fairly unassuming, appearing at first to be just another branching tunnel. This tunnel, however, dead-ends at a thick door. Next to the door is a small metal panel with numbers 1-9 on small buttons. While this may appear to be a coded lock, it is in fact a fingerprint scanner. When a member is accepted into R.U.S.T., their info is added to the system. All members have to do is hold their thumb on the number 7 for 3 seconds, and the door will open. If multiple numbers are pressed or the scanner doesn't recognize the print, an alarm inside the base will go off. The base itself resembles a large dome, with small tunnels leading to other rooms. It is rather clean inside, although the lingering scent from the sewers often finds it's way in. There is a main room, where members gather and meetings are called, a medbay for the injured, several storage rooms for stolen equipment, a few rooms for those who opt to live in the base, a mechanic's room for building and repairing equipment, and a more private meeting room for the leaders. All are kept in pristine state by the Passive Hestians. For a general feel, Thermopylae is based in a Victorian steampunk-ish world, with several Greek influences in architecture.
Major Buildings(If your character runs a business, describe it in your form and I’ll add it to the list):
-The Mytikas A large, elegant building formed of gleaming iron. The building has large metal columns flanking its entrance, and stands on a small rise so it towers over the other buildings surrounding it. It is the meetingplace of the Council, and almost all but the four members are forbidden from entering.
-The Guardhouse A smaller, less extravagant building than the Mytikas, the Guardhouse is where the clockwork machines in charge of guarding the town are stored. Here, they can also have repairs, maintenance, and other services provided to them. Only employees are allowed into the Guardhouse.
-The Grand Library A once gorgeous building slowly falling into disrepair. The Grand Library holds rows upon rows of papers and bound books, holding information on nearly anything you can imagine. Although its external maintenance has deteriorated, the Librarians keep the inside neat and organized. It is open for anyone to enter.
-The Muse Hill Slightly outside of the clustered portion of town lies this small, unassuming iron building. Inside is a small museum of history, detailing the city’s past and development. All are allowed inside, but there is a small entrance fee.
-Atmós and Atsáli's Factory One of the biggest company’s factories, the factory of Atmós and Atsáli is a dark building spanning several blocks. Only employees are allowed inside.
-Michanismós's Factory A slightly smaller building than that of Atmós and Atsáli, Michanismós is still a major presence in the city- and an avid payer of the Council. Only employees are allowed inside.
-Chalkeío
Dorothy Moore's small mechanics and repair shop.

Joining
RULES Forum Rules: Obviously, follow all forum rules to keep us from getting shut down. If these were to change, they would take precedent over the rules established below. Literacy: I ask that everyone who joins the Roleplay be able to produce at least three sentences or two lines of text. We also ask that you refrain from using text language(except out of rp, and then in moderation). Activity: Every roleplay depends on the activity of its members, and this one’s no different. In order to make this as enjoyable as possible I ask that you post a reply (not just a post that says here) twice every week. If you fail to complete a post by this time you will receive a warning. If you reach three weeks of inactivity you will be deleted. If you're going to be inactive for life reasons, let me know. I’ll be happy to give you some more time. Respect: Respect is another hugely important part of any Roleplay. If you show disrespect towards any of the members you will get one warning before being kicked out. This ensures that this rp is a safe and friendly area. Realism: I do ask that you keep your characters mostly realistic- since we're doing Victorian steampunk, try to give characters names that would fit with this, and no species other than human please. Also, please no Mary sues or perfect characters. Just include a few flaws in your form and we'll be good. Romance/Battles: Because this Roleplay is going to be exposed to everyone I ask that you keep romance and gore at a pg-16 level. If you are unsure if something is okay, feel free to send me a pm and I'll judge it for you. I’m okay with some fighting, but just don't go into highly gory detail. Plot: If you have a plot or want your characters to play a major role in one, all you have to do is ask! It lets you guys decide what happens. I can't guarantee that it'll go exactly as you planned, but I’ll try to keep it on track as best we can. Power-play/God-mod: I honestly didn't even think about these till now. It should go without saying, right? But I'll say it anyway. You can't control other's characters without their explicit permission- on page, preferably, so we know you're not making it up. Your character can't know things they weren't around for. Just don't do these things, and we won't have any problems. Yo plz don’t steal my stuff: I wrote most of the information on this page by myself, as well as did the layout and worldbuilding. Please don’t steal this idea. I’ll be sad.
FORM ⚙Full Name | Gender | Age | Primary Virtue | Occupation/Role
→Description(Physical) →Major Virtues(At least 3, including Primary) →History/Backstory
Additional Information ---
Occupation/Role: When I say occupation, I’m referring to a character’s job, what they do in society(ex. Mechanic, Storekeeper, etc.). For some characters, their occupation is their role(Council members, etc.). However, members of R.U.S.T. will have both an occupation and a role- their character’s place in the Rebellion as well as what they do outside of it.
Virtues: Since I always have a really hard time writing personalities and many people like to develop a character’s personality through rp, I decided to do something a bit simpler than a full fledged personality description. A Virtue is a personality trait that can be either positive or negative(loyal, creative, belligerent, strict, etc.). A person’s Primary Virtue is the trait that carries the most weight in a person’s personality, what ultimately drives their decisions. If you need help thinking of Virtues, check out this website.

Characters
Government:
⚙Amelia Gardener | Female | 42 | Mechanical | Head Councilperson
→A rather elegant woman, Amelia stands at 5’11”- 6’2” when in heels. She is fairly lean, her body not bearing much muscle as she's never had to do much physical labor. Her hair is long, going down to about her shoulder blades, and is colored in a light brown. Amelia’s eyes are a striking hazel color, and often lend their aid to her intimidating glare. Her complexion is rather pale, but she often covers her face in powders so you can hardly tell how much of it is real. Amelia’s clothing is befitting of a Council member, often including rich fabrics and the latest trends. However, she has a more formal, simple approach to her wardrobe than many other nobles, including her own family. This elegant simplicity is something Amelia believes all should strive for, and often turns up her nose at those gaudy members of the aristocracy. →Mechanical, Sly, Materialistic, Manipulative, Orderly, Unfoolable. →Amelia has been invested in politics since she was a young woman. Her husband, Warren, was elected to the seat of Councilperson, and she made sure to keep up to date on current situations alongside him. When Warren died of an untimely infection, Amelia was one of the few who ran for election. She was, of course, the victor. Striving to become even better than her husband, Amelia was eventually promoted to the seat of Head Councilperson. She has been serving in this position for 7 years now, and hasn't grown tired of it in the least. Husband is dead, but if anyone wants to make one of her children go right ahead ^^. ---
R.U.S.T.:
⚙ Elliot ‘Ellie’ Harper | Female | 23 yrs | Protective | Jeweler/Ares
→Short and stubborn, Elliot Harper somehow stands out as a leader among most civilians. Standing at a whopping 5’2” the young woman is used to being the shortest person in the room, though her more muscular frame seems to make her height intimidating. Her skin is fair, though splotches of dark freckles scatter themselves across her face and arms. Her hair is a dark brown, appearing almost black on the polluted streets as it curls down her back. Her eyes are a light brown, and flecks of amber can be seen around the irises. Though she doesn’t make a big deal of it, Ellie dresses fairly formal for a R.U.S.T. member. It is not unusual for her to wear skirts and short dresses on important missions, and she’s always wearing some kind of jewelry- a way to show off her skills. However, she never goes anywhere without a weapon, whether it be a rifle or silver knife. →Impatient/Impulsive, rowdy, protective, good-natured, and reliable →Unlike many of her fellow R.U.S.T. leaders, Elliot was born into a family of privilege. Her father was a doctor and her mother an experienced tailor. Together they managed to secure a household in Elysium where they raised their three children, Ellie being both the oldest and only girl. It was here that she developed her protective spirit as she struggled to take care of her brothers when her parents worked late. She would’ve have been happy if things had stayed that way, but at age sixteen she developed a love for metal work and secretly stashed away money so she could open her own shop one day. However, when her parents discovered this, they greatly disapproved, feeling like they were working as hard as possible so that Ellie and her brothers could enjoy the luxury of the aristocracy. Terminating her dreams, her parents began to force her into the role of a noblewoman, forcing her to abandon her younger brothers at home while she attended galas and political meetings. After two years of putting up with this, she made up her mind to run away. Taking what remained of her ‘shop fund’ she dressed herself in simple mechanics’ garb and sauntered down to Asphodel, expecting her new life to come easy. Of course, it didn't. But after a year of struggling and work at a lowly coffeehouse, Ellie made up her mind. She would go back to her parents’ house- not to give up, but to steal the possessions that were once hers in order to buy her shop and make her dream come true. The plan worked perfectly, and at the time she was satisfied, opening her jewelry shop Asími kai Chrysó, and securing a space in one of Tartarus’ many buildings. However she began to feel restless again, and when an offer came to join the newly forming R.U.S.T, she took it just for the thrill. Quickly, she worked her way up the ranks and when she became Ares, she took the responsibility with pride. Now, she views her other assembly members as her family and would be heartbroken if any of them died.
If anyone wants to claim her parents or brothers, feel free to! Owns a jewelry shop called Asími kai Chrysó. ---
⚙Ambrose Miller | Male | 53 | Eloquent | Athena
→Ambrose is rather tall, standing just above 6’1”. He is thickly built with an equal combination of muscle and fat, his weight fitting neatly into his taller form. His hair is short and greying, and is accompanied by a beard and moustache that wrap around the lower half of his face. His eyes are a dark hazel, and have pronounced laugh lines etched in their corners. Ambrose’s skin tone is light tan in hue, although it has lightened slightly due to his prolonged time spent in R.U.S.T.’s underground headquarters. As for attire, Ambrose usually wears more formal suits. He thinks this helps him appear more professional to the members of the organization, and thusly make them respect him more despite his age. However, this tends to backfire on him. →Eloquent, Dignified, Serious, Pretentious, Dry. →Ambrose was born and raised in the slums of Tartarus, growing up with barely anything of his own. When he was still rather young, his sister died from prolonged exposure to the intense pollution their home was surrounded in. Later on, Ambrose’s father died in an accident at his factory job, and the family could barely support itself. This rough upbringing later manifested itself into an intense hatred of the Council, on whom he blamed all his family's misfortune. He was the original founder of R.U.S.T. three years ago, although he doesn't tell people this often. He came up with the Assembly, with the Greek Gods theme. He even chose the location for the base, although others had to help him build it. All he wants to see is an end to what he views as the wrongs the Council does to those poorer families like his own. ---
⚙Dorothy ‘Dot’ Moore | Female | 19 | Curious | Mechanic/Hestian(Passive)
→A somewhat short individual, Dot stands at only about 5’4”. She isn't extremely skinny or chubby, muscular or weak, her build favoring the middle of the road in nearly every aspect. Her hair is light blonde, reaching down to just past her shoulders when she leaves it loose. This rarely happens, however, as Dot usually keeps her hair out of her face by tying it back into two small pigtails. Her eyes are a deep emerald green, and easily betray her inner emotions. She has a fairly pale complexion, but her face tends to turn red easily when she's been working. As for clothing, Dot usually wears whatever's convenient for her at the moment. Most of the time this means her mechanic get-up, but she can occasionally be convinced to put a little more effort into her outfits, especially if it's for a R.U.S.T. mission. →Curious, Creative, Easily Excitable, Bright, Cute, Gullible, Naive. →Dot grew up working alongside her father, Lucas, who helped teach her nearly everything she knows about mechanics. He worked in the Guardhouse for the Council, and Dot started on this path too. Once she turned 18, he worked for the Guardhouse for about a year before quitting to start her own mechanics repair shop. At about the same time, she was introduced to R.U.S.T. and quickly accepted the offer to join. She's new both to business and to the rebellion, so it's somewhat hard for her to know exactly what to do, but she'll never stop trying until she gets it right. Owner of Chalkeío. ---
⚙ Lucas Turner | Male | 21 yrs | Confident | Factory Worker/Hestian(Active)
→Tall and lanky, Lucas Turner often refers to himself as the handsomest man in R.U.S.T despite having a more rugged appearance. The young man stands at a total height of 6’3”, and his skin, though naturally dark in tone, glows a more sickly green due to years working in the thick pollution of a factory. His frame is fairly muscular and more angular than round. His hair is kept long and is usually tied back in a vain attempt to keep up his ‘damn good looks’. His eyes are a dark coffee brown, and he’ll often compare them to that of a cow’s, though he’s never seen one and can only infer their true splendor. His outfits are fairly basic, as he can only afford the most basic clothing. Despite this, he walks with the confidence of a councilman, and says that his outfits are all just a part of his ‘aesthetic’. →Confident, cocky, narcissistic, charming, witty, and careless →Tartarus is the only home Lucas has known his entire life. His mother was poor, and he never met his father and namesake due to him dying in a factory ‘accident’ only a month before he was born. Then it was just him, his mother, and his older sister, Abigail. Together they lived in relative peace, both children and mother having to find jobs in order to survive in the harsh world. But the peace did not stay, and during a tragic factory fire both Abigail and his mother were trapped in the burning building and died of their injuries. Bitter and angry, Lucas had to learn how to fend for himself, throwing his whole mind into his work. When he first heard of R.U.S.T. he actively sought out how to join, wanting revenge on the cruel government that he blames for his family's death.

⚙ Lucas Turner | Male | 21 yrs | Confident | Factory Worker/R.U.S.T. (Active) →Tall and lanky, Lucas Turner often refers to himself as the handsomest man in R.U.S.T despite having a more rugged appearance. When he first heard of R.U.S.T. he actively sought out how to join, wanting revenge on the cruel government that he blames for his family's death. n/a ---
