An idea. The simplest of things.
Or so we think.
The word itself is rated a two out of twenty, meaning every person that speaks English would know its meaning and know the word, only words like 'the' and 'and' earning a base one.
Yet it has over seven definitions, more than the average.
An idea is a noun; a physical, tactile thing. Yet it exists only within our minds. As a noun, it is implied that one can have it. It can be within a person's hands as their property.
But can a person actually have an idea? Can we own one? Buy one?
Technically speaking, yes, you can buy an idea in the form of a patent.
But can you really, truly, own it?
Ideas are not made, they're given. Inspired by others, building off of what is known, ideas are forged out of material that is already there. Like using the same bit of clay to fashion a cube and a sphere; both are still the same clay, just in different shapes.
So then, one can ask, is an idea truly unique?
If we keep the idea (Haha) of the clay, then no, ideas are not ever one-hundred percent unique.
But ideas cannot be made from nothing. You can't wish for an idea without a base, and one will come. Ideas are inspired. They are gifts.
So back to the first idea, can one truly own an idea?
If you have an idea, then really, the idea isn't yours. Quite the opposite, the idea is for everyone but you. Ideas are meant to be shared. They're gifts, given through people, not from them.
As a writer, ideas are meant to be written. They may be your ideas, but who really benefits from them? Everyone does. You, and every reader you touch with your words.
Yes, you can own an idea. You can hold it close to your heart, a physical, warm thing. You can touch it and play with it. But although they are owned, they are not meant to be kept. The best idea is the one that is shared. Only then can it reach its full potential.
As a writer, that means write. It means show people your writing, it means keep on going, no matter what. For it is your idea, your gift.
Without you, there is no idea. It has one owner, and it has chosen you to be the one.
Treasure it. Its a blessing, being given the idea. Share it, show people what ideas can do. Write it. And don't be afraid. Keep going. It's your idea, and nothing can stop you. It's your gift, as a writer, to be given these ideas. It's one-of-a-kind. Unique. Show it off, be proud, and never, ever, stop writing. It's your idea. Pass it on.

I'll fix formatting, but this is old and I was going through old threads and I thought it should be shared so.
