This is my first topic here, and I guess this goes here since it has to do with writing.
But anyway, like I said, I want to write a story focused on animals. Sort of like Warriors, I guess. Or Watership Down, just to name a few animal-focused books. I even have ideas for it and everything. The problem is, I'm not sure what type of animal I should focus on, or whether it should be various animals, like with the Redwall series.
I've thought about doing meerkats or wolves, but I'm not entirely sure. Any other ideas?

tbh Redwall was the best stuff and things like that aren't often done, so it'd be cool to see some other works with that style of world

It really depends though I've always felt that if there are animals in a society-like, anthropomorphic style book, it should be a progression of a point, not the focus of the book. Like Redwall or even zootopia, where the ideas are more about prejudice, race and gender/societal roles than the actual animal side of things.
I guess I'm just trying to say that it grows from a choice of portrayal not just 'lets make a book featuring mice/rabbits ect'
so I think you should think of what you want to prove from your piece and choose creatures that can be projected into roles to further your point rather than choosing something that is cool.
Not that I'm one to lecture that you can't just go with what you want to do/what feels fun. Most the time that's where the bigger ideas show themselves, when you let down your guard and the little plots in your heart make their way into the characters and onto the page. But I also wouldn't close your mind to the potential that your piece could grow farther than a cat and mouse plot into something bigger. And if the animals help portray that or are just funner to write, then by all means never stop when the writing feels good. Just don't get trapped into trying to force a plot onto the writing when it wants to take flight.

Thanks, Brownie, although I was already aware of this. Honestly, I actually do just want to write a story about animals for the sake of it, but it's really nothing serious. I already have enough stories I'm working on, so this is really more like a side project I want to do just for fun and also for something to work on in case I get writer's block on my other stories. I'll probably turn it into something more down the line, but this is really more for me and me alone at the moment. I just need to figure out what my focus should be on.

mk ^^
I sorta guessed that's what you were going for but there's always those people that read warriors and are like 'lets write about penguins!' and make some crazy stuff up that just doesn't work meh
if you're just going for ideas and fun you could try doing those flash prompts where you have five minutes or something to write whatever comes to mind on a word or idea and that might get you a world you can start building with
I mean you probably have more experience with this than I do so I'm not really in a position to give advice heh

I'm really just looking for suggestions on what animal I could possibly write about.
