Chapter Two the vial squid and its crewThe Vile Squid was first built as a ship for the Queen's navy. It was stolen and then transformed, however, by a wily pirate by the name of Henry Prince (no, he was not of noble birth). Captain Prince, as he then decided to call himself, assembled a crew for the purpose of pillaging passing cargo ships and even small island towns. Soon the reputation of the ship grew and it was not long before it became one of the most well known pirate ships in all the sea. The signature of the Vile Squid's crew is to leave a recent conquest of a ship practically untouched. The crew is tossed overboard with cannon balls tied to their ankles. Later, passing boats will talk of "phantom ships" that have been left of all life to float aimlessly with the current.
Today the Vile Squid is as wealthy and as deadly as ever. The crew has grown, and so too have their goals. Captain Prince was shot and killed in battle (said to have died with a wicked grin). So the Captain's hat has been passed down to Captain Nemo, who is no less reckless or tricky than his predecessor. He has currently negotiated an alliance between himself and the naval captain stationed on a nearby Caribbean island. In exchange for forgoing the pillaging of villages on the island, he will instead focus his efforts on the French ships. Meanwhile, a number of pirate ships have accumulated around the Caribbean. Although the pirates often meet and negotiate, tensions between them are often high. Each of them have their own ambitions. There is an island called Millonae where the pirate ships congregate. It is inhabited mostly by lowly folk who don't mind the company of the foul-mouthed and morally corrupt marauders.
There is a newcomer to the pirate community who claims to have knowledge of Neptune's Horn. He has pledged to find the tool with his crew and to use it in order to accumulate the type of power and resources none can image. Nemo, a competitive and jealous man by nature, has promised his crew that he will be the first to lay his hands on the object. By his own vow, no other man or woman will ever be called the King of the Seven Seas.

Chapter Three the positions on the vile squidAs with any ship, the Vile Squid has a ranking system which decides the duties of its crew. I use the pronoun "he" to describe all of the roles, but that doesn't necessarily mean all of them are men. There can be women on the ship. That being said, keep in mind the majority would be male and any woman on a pirate ship would have to be tougher than nails. The roles are as follows:
Captain: Although not the ultimate authority as on a naval ship, a pirate captain is the final decision maker when confronted with difficult scenarios (battles, raids, etc). [claimed by glow]
Quartermaster: One of the most important men on the ship; he ensures the tasks assigned by the captain are carried through. He also divides booty and is the main authority when it comes to discipline. [claimed by Ghost]
Boatswain: The boatswain is in charge of looking after the physical shape of the ship. He checks the condition of the masts, sails, and exterior of the boat. He also oversees materials and supplies. [open]
Navigator: The navigator is a valuable position, given the difficult task of deciphering longitude. Some navigate by the stars or by rudimentary maps. [claimed by mourningdove]
Carpenter: He answers directly to the boatswain, and is in charge of carrying out the needed physical tasks to maintain the ship. [open]
The Surgeon: Doctors are as difficult to come by as navigators, but they are of upmost importance on a ship. They look after all of the sick and injured, and keep stock of medicines and relevant books. [claimed by icey]
The Master Gunner: Cannons are a refined science that require an educated eye. The master gunner is the most skilled at firing cannons and oversees the training of the younger/less skilled pirates. [open]
The Crew: Of course, there are a good number of people on the ship with no specific title. They are under the command of the captain and all of the other men (or women) with titles. [multiple characters]
Powder Monkeys: The youngest boys on the ship are assigned the task of running gunpowder to and fro during battle. They can also be assigned any task that requires small fingers or a light/nimble form (running ropes over masts and so on) [two to three characters]

Chapter Four the rules for joiningJust to get this out of the way, here are my expectations for the rp:
1. Please be willing to write at least three substantial paragraphs. Most of the people who join will be advanced, and so it will be more fun if people are willing to match the level of those they interact with.
2. Do your best to write something. Once people claim their roles, they have a tendency to disappear. Let me know if you are no longer interested or don't have the time. I get it if your muse changes or you get busy.
3. Keep in mind the other characters in the RP. Try to keep them diverse and balanced. If you see an opportunity to create an archetype of some sort, take that opportunity rather than repeating what has already been done.
4. Follow the forum rules. Obviously. No insane violence or intimacy. Take it elsewhere if it's too explicit for younger or more innocent eyes.
5. Plot! And chat! Planning is the lifeblood of RP, so don't be afraid to propose an idea that you have. On that note, be respectful of other people's ideas. If you disagree with something, do so in a polite way.
6. I'd like for the social expectations to be similar to that of the time. There were female pirates, yes, but keep in mind the world they live in when you make them. No sweet, flawless princesses who just happen to live on pirate ships. That's unrealistic and obnoxious.
7. LGBTQ+ characters are, of course, welcome.

Chapter Six the crew of the vial squidHere are all of the pirates on the vile squid's crew. There are a select few other characters, but they will be listed last on the page. I'd recommend making at least one character on the Vile Squid, because the others will not always be within the scope of POV.
The CaptainNemo Richards [glow] Male | 34 | Pansexual Physical Description: Nemo was once described by a colleague as being a human incarnate of Hades, and that was one of the greatest compliments he ever received. Indeed, there is a visual wickedness that brings to mind a character such as the god of the underworld when one observes Nemo. He is taller than the average man by about six inches. His height adds to his general air of authority. It is, however, undermined slightly by the slimness of his build. He is a naturally wiry man, with long limbs and a boniness he has never quite outgrown. His shoulders are thankfully broad enough to encourage an essence of athleticism. Anyway, the Hades comparison is likely due to his long black hair, which drapes around his shoulders like spilled ink. He is a very pale man no matter how much he stands upon the main deck, squinting into the sun. His skin is like fresh parchment and gives a slight transparence that on anyone else would suggest sickliness. His features are of good proportion and shape. His nose is long and narrow and his eyes have an almost serpentine quality. His mouth is shapely and attractive. H has a tendency to pull it into a devilish smirk. Nemo's entire body is painted with countless tattoos. There are even some on his face, a few turquoise lines extending up from his jaw and aiming diagonally toward his cheekbones. They resemble scars from some clawed creature. There are also the tentacles of a black squid peaking out from his collar. As far as attire goes, Nemo wears almost exclusively black and white. His most common outfit is composed of neat black pants, tall black boots, and a billowy white shirt under a tailored black coat.
Personality Description: If ever a man was born to be a pirate, it was Nemo. He takes delight in all things wicked and corrupt and societally unacceptable. He foils all those who oppose him. He revels in a difficult challenge and is known to drag his crew into the most impossible situations. Only to escape practically unscathed. None of this is to say he is completely evil. In fact, many of his friends and crew would say differently. Yes, he cares little for the rules set forth by society. But he is also loyal to those he chooses to like. Despite enjoying the spoils of wealth, he is generous with the coin he earns for the crew. Most of the joy is earned from the adventure itself. It's also worth noting that one should be cautious when entering negotiations with Nemo. He is a pathological liar on all accounts and is known to make promises he has no intention of keeping. He has a sleek charm and intelligence that he often wields in order to get his way. The QuartermasterName [Ghost] Gender | Age | Sexuality wip
The BoatswainName [sc] Gender | Age | Sexuality wip
The NavigatorNicola Fournier [mourningdove] Male (trans) | 23 | Gay A fit young man, Nicola looks like he belongs at the sea. His hair has grown from its original shortly cropped nature, and now falls at an awkward length near his shoulders, the brown locks often tickling the back of his neck. The top half of his hair if often sported in a little bun or ponytail, though despite his best efforts, small pieces make their way back to his face, poking his eyes as he tries to read. His eyes are a spectacular light blue; without a doubt, they will be the first thing you notice about him. Either that, or the scar that traces the curve of his chin. The light scar is highlighted by the tan, light brown skin, accented by numerous freckles. His eyebrows are thick and bushy, and often knitted together as he stares at the night sky or an old, yellowing map, despite his terrible eyesight. Nicola is 5'7, and very conscious about his small frame. To make up for it, he is always making sure he is in peak physical condition. He isn't the strongest on board, not by a long shot, but he can hold up a steady sprint or swim for a great amount of time; his cardio is impeccable.
Nicola is incredibly intelligent. One needs to be, if they're going to lead the greatest pirate ship to the ends of the ocean! The young man was memorizing constellations before he could walk. The stars always guided him home, more reliable than the winding, nonsense streets of his French hometown. Though, Nicola has great difficulty reading maps. That isn't much of a problem, though, as he will stare at the parchment until his headache threatens to rip through his skull until he knows the way by heart. One can often see him pressing the heel of his palm to his head, trying to alleviate the pressure. Nicola is kind in nature, but knows when and where to be tough and stand up. He never doubts himself, and believes his navigation abilities to be the best on the sea.
Nicola is from a French city most don't care enough about to pronounce correctly. He grew up speaking French and English fluently, as his parents were fluent in either one of the other. He has many sisters, and is the second youngest. He was born with a twin, and though he doesn't regret leaving home a single day, he does miss his twin sister. She remains his best friend, even if he hasn't seen her in almost a decade. He hopes to see her soon. Nicola joined the ship to escape a life of working class poverty and coming home covered in flour to no bread on the table, arms and back sore form the mill. Nicola lives for the sea. The light reflecting off the waves in glittering patterns, the stillness, the way it doesn't care if you live or die, but allows you to sail either way. His favorite is the drying salty air, and the smell of the rain on the beach. The CarpenterName [sc] Gender | Age | Sexuality wip

Chapter Eight possible outside charactersLike the plots, this section is a bit more flexible. You are permitted to insert characters into the RP that are not a part of the Vile Squid's crew. Keep in mind, however, that if they're not in one of these groups, it might be hard to find a place to put them. As long as you can give me a good enough reason for their existence, you have permission to be creative.
The Crew of the Harpy's Song: The Harpy's Song is the rival of the Vile Squid. More specifically, their captain is the one who claims to have knowledge of Neptune's Horn. The captain pretty much the antagonist of the RP, therefore is a very important role. Let me know if you would like to claim him. He can also have a few trusted allies. [Captain open] [crew open]
Allies from Millonae: The pirate island called Millonae often houses pirates who are either looking for a ship or who are awaiting orders from their captain. This can include a number of off duty captains or various pirates who provide knowledge and support to Nemo and his crew. Who knows, a few might lend a hand or join the mission. [open]
The British: Nemo made a pact with a naval captain, and that role is up for grabs as well. We can also have important nobles or merchants who have a specific interest in the peace with the Vile Squid. Perhaps some more enemies? Or even allies? [open]

Chapter Nine other characters (besides the crew of the Vile Squid)Again, please just float the idea by me before making an outside character. That's just to ensure everyone's characters are involved in some sort of action.
Naval Captain Christopher Pentland [glow] Male | 37 | Heterosexual
wip
Quartermaster of Hade's Plague Vivienne Davenport [glow] Female | 30 | Bisexual
Physical Description: Vivienne's genetic make-up is quite the mystery. Her mother claims to be half black and half white, and she suspects Vivienne's father had some touch of Native American despite being considered a Caucasian man. But really it's anyone's guess. The woman herself shows hints of just about every race. Vivienne is relatively tall for a woman, standing at about 5'7. She is lean and physically fit, as most pirates are. Her skin is of a light copper, which darkens during periods in which she is exposed to much sunlight. Her hair, unlike her mother's, is straight as an arrow. It falls to about her mid back, although usually she keeps it tied in a variety of messy styles. Her facial features are reminiscent native American features. She has an ovular face with high cheekbones and an angular jaw. Her nose is narrow and somewhat flat. Vivienne's lips are from her mother, full and proud. Her eyes too are black as night and often narrowed in curious suspicion. It goes without saying that she is an fascinating creature to behold, and her gender is only a portion of that. It is not totally unusual to see a female pirate. The profession is preferable to several a lowborn woman could find herself in. Of course it isn't exactly for the faint of heart. Vivienne dresses as a woman is expected, often donning dresses that have been altered to better suit her needs. Despite the feminine cuts, she stays faithful to the structured style of the masculine pirates (her clothing typically lacks in the frills and bright colors of her more eccentric counterparts).
Personality Description: It takes a certain kind of woman to survive amongst pirates. One is required to be assertive and often independent. Succeeding required a firm confidence in her own abilities that was often challenged by those who didn't believe in the strength of the fairer sex. She became accustomed to the satisfaction of her own company from a young age. Her outer shell hardened and she vowed never to trust those who gave her no reason to trust. She is a reserved woman and a very deliberate one. Everything she does and says has been thoroughly considered. Despite being female, she has a powerful presence. She is not opposed to strict discipline, and her promise of retribution is sometimes tested by those who believe her incapable of severity. It also goes without saying that Vivienne is not one to feel sorry for herself when times get tough. You won't find her staring wistfully off into the distance. She is a woman of action and her determination is not be questioned. For this reason, some criticize her for being too masculine in approach. There are those in her crew who distrust her because she is not what they have come to expect of women. As one might expect, this has eroded Vivienne's patience. She has a short fuse when it comes to men in particular.
