the discussion thread this is the thread for members of "That's Strange" to discuss things. plot, how your day's going (mostly plot though), character relationships, subplots, minor characters.. whatever comes to mind. it's just to separate the clutter and keep ideas in one place, if that's alright with you all.
no ideas are stupid ones. if you've got an idea for how things should go, share it with the rest of the group. if you've got an opinion, share it. don't be afraid to use your voice--it's only a couple mostly anonymous keystrokes to a bunch of strangers, after all. what's there to lose, really?
plot something isn't right--everybody knows it. people don't just disappear without reason, then show up murdered for no reason. the police department won't say anything. but a certain group of unlikely associates, all classmates of the murder victim, aren't content with the law enforcement's effort to solve this crime. so, armed with their youthful idealism and drive, decide to take matters into their own hands.
will they get in trouble? most likely. is the truth worth it? oh, absolutely.
the rest is tbd.
subplots / relationships
again, tbd. the whiteboardkeeping facts, suspects, and diary logs all centered in one place.
what we know:
a classmate mysteriously turned up dead in a creek after having been missing for a week.
- Brendon Beck's younger brother, Casey, also disappeared [some time] later
- the "search party" forms
- Casey's body is determined to be a "fake" one.

what up, gang? @ all three of us thus far (I'll tag ya to make it a little easier for y'all to find, ᴏᴡʟ and shades)
I figured I'd post a starter once we got a little more of an idea of what direction we were gonna go w the plot, bc I'd prefer for everyone to be on the same page before just launching a starter into the abyss lmao
so. the season is currently early fall, with it being just before homecoming (with all the fun activities in homecoming week, the big football game, and the dance) being kinda overshadowed w the fact that this kid went missing (we still need to determine this kid's background/social status/role in the community n stuff)
I imagined that the kid's body would turn up the morning after the homecoming dance, which aaaaaa is scary, and then our characters somehow convene and yadda yadda, the rest is history
but since the original 'Stranger Things' has some supernatural elements, we also need to figure out how to incorporate a little of that into this plot.
first obvious idea: the dead student's body is a fake one. it's stuffed plastic but was created to look super real/be all rigid and stuff--how they'd discover this, idk. but it would mean one of two things: the student's real body is out there somewhere, or someone took it and replaced it w this to be found on purpose. oooh, mysterious.
which then leads to the question, how'd they actually die, who/what killed them, and who/what didn't want the people to find out?

hmm. for the fake body thing. if the young man has grounds to being murdered, an autopsy would probably be the way to figure out it's fake. as for the rest of that question: idk.

no prob, bob. take all the time you need. I prob won't be able to crank out a quality starter until like... Friday, anyway. midterms can suck my butt
but see, here's an idea: if whatever person/organization responsible for this kid's death has any ties at all in the local government (think: small and underfunded w apathetic employees), they can work a little magic. corruption. hell yeah
but we also gotta think of ideas for who's hiding what, what really is going on behind the scenes of this town that seems so peaceful.. hm.
idea: in my other roleplays where I use Brendon, he's got a kid brother. what if that brother also went missing after the body, real or fake, of their classmate was discovered? that gives him a personal reason to start investigating.. but. hm.

I like the idea of Brendon's brother being involved, because motive is always a good thing to start with. As to what's happened to the dead boy, well- hm. I suck at coming up with ideas and scenarios, really.
With the government involvement- it'd be interesting if their relations extended beyond fellow government employees. If they tipped off local hospitals and school- teachers are replaced, doctors are listening, and they've all got their eyes on anyone who starts digging. This would narrow the playing field for the gang, because they'd have to find places where they could talk without anyone hearing or growing suspicious. They'd have to act normal and be watchful, and it'd add some suspense.

maybe we can decide what happened to the dead kid (and the motive behind it all) once we kinda decide what forces are at work/corrupting the small town.
but yes yes y e s I like that a lot Owl!! holy shhh. yes. so they have to start being hella careful and check their landlines and homes and cars and stuff for bugs/microphones, just in case someone really is listening (potential subplot: one character starts getting mad paranoid, and everyone thinks they're nuts, until they hear a third person's breathing over a supposedly confidential phone call, or something)

Just to rip off Stranger Things: they could start carrying around walky talkies and stuff. "Brendon. You're rich. Buy us these."
And then, since I've actually been thinking about it a lot- Gretchen lives pretty far out in a small, shabby house,
on the end of a long road, and tucked up against the woods. The woods would be helpful because they can all hike out there to talk without having to worry about being heard, under the guise of "going camping at Gretchen's." that and it's an excuse for when they're actually going out to snoop around where they shouldn't.

i love character family headcanon's. but i finished Charlie, finally!
also charlie can be snack provider. his mom probably sends him with so many snacks.
so if we are going supernatural forces, maybe something like inter-dimensional. but not so much like Upside-Down dimenisonal, but like second Earth dimensions? Like same people from different universes with different destinies?

and I was thinking if we do this inter-dimension earth thing the dead kid may be really a person but instead he's from the other dimension and the real one is being held somewhere. And maybe the government goofs and think "we'll no harm can come letting them think the duplicate is their dead son" but even though the two guys are biologically the same they had different personalities. And maybe something obscure in the autopsy report (that Brendon happens to look at cause his dad is a lawyer or another convenient character with parents of entitled to info jobs) triggers one of the group cause the dead kid was either good friends with everyone, one group member, or the group in general. Like maybe the report says he had blackened lungs from smoking every day but the others know. They know he never smoked a day in his life and decide to investigate?

but ye, I can see Bren having access to documents or something as an intern at his dad's office (or maybe being a sneaky, deviant son for once and raiding his briefcase) only to find that there was indeed something fishy in his 'brother's' autopsy. love it love it
but what would make the others want to join this search? as far as what we have going character and personality-wise rn, these folks couldn't be any more different (which is what I wanted tbh).. but still.. we need Interaction
edit: also shades I read this tumblr conspiracy theory about tom holland always looking like he has a frog in his mouth and now I can't unsee it so I giggled a bit at the pic you put for Charlie's faceclaim lmaooo. but good choice though, tom is a cutie

What about a nice and healthy both? Deviant intern.
They could all have their individual reasons- perhaps he lived close by to one, or was family friends with another.
Or it could be one of those scenarios where none of them are particularly friends with each other, but all mutually shared a relationship with him in specific. Like... you know how you have groups of friends, but one group might not interact or know another group-- that, but... individual peeps. Of course, you could still do whatever you want with that- a character knowing one or two of the characters, but maybe not another. ETC. ETC.
Just an idea.

first off—i’m really sorry for how terribly inactive i’ve been here. long story short i’ve had midterms and i’m now traveling with my team, so i’ve been off my schedule/jet lagged for a couple days
anyway!! i’ll be getting back home sometime sunday morning, and i do plan on writing some kind of starter that day too. so!! yeah! sorry, just know that i’m still hella excited to get this roleplay off the ground finally
good idea owl! i made brendon’s brother a really amicable guy, someone that everyone either knew well or knew was just a radiant sunbeam of a person lmao. that should get them wanting to do justice for a kid that literally did no wrong ever in his whole life
