"Well I'm glad I pleased you then!" Canyonpaw snapped, voice tight with shrill emotion that he was trying his best to hide. He swallowed quickly, pushing it away as he muttered. "There. I did it...I want to go back now..."

(Hey Fox!)
"Calm down, Canyonpaw." Batecho got up and walked toward him. "I know it's scary to be alone in the caves' darkness, but you must get use to it. You could be on a patrol down here and something could go terribly wrong, you need to learn to keep your nerves should that happen."

"I wasn't scared for me!" Canyonpaw snapped, stomping away from his mentor and barking. "I thought you had fallen in a crevice or something! You said we were going to train, not play tricks on me!" He gave a tight grimace.
"For a minute I thought I was doing fine and then you run off out of nowhere. Whatever...I learned my lesson." He refused to look at her right now.

Batecho smiled thinly. "That was precisely the point, Canyonpaw. While on patrol a clanmate could easily fall into a crevice, get lost, or even attacked. You must always be vigilant. This was only meant to teach you to do just that. I can't tell you how many times my mentor did that to me to teach me that lesson, where my brother understood the first time. It is alright to be afraid for your clanmates, in fact it is encouraged. Fear, when controlled, keeps us alert and can even save your life. So, you must always be afraid, Canyonpaw."

"Yeah, well I'm not you!" Canyonpaw shouted back, lashing his tail and giving a noise of frustrated distrust. Who was to say she wouldn't pull stunts like this all the time. "And I was scared alright. So I'm very happy you got your results!" He spat. "I'm going back to camp!" He cried, storming away.

"Canyonpaw!" Batecho shouted after him. She let out a sigh and hurried after him.

Canyonpaw stomped through the caverns, trying not to feel a burn of sadness in him. Deep down he knew her lesson was a logical one, but it felt humiliating to be scared for a lesson as well. He refused to answer back.

Batecho didn't call out to him again once they were in the caves, but she did keep track of where he went to make sure he went the right way in his angered state.

Canyonpaw was sharply sure to navigate back the right way, refusing to let himself be put in another embarassing situation. He could see the main tunnel back to the camp now and pointedly sped up, too mad to want to continue battle training.

Batecho slowed when they reached the main tunnel, watching her apprentice go off. She shook her head and let him go.
Mooncliff was headed for the apprentice den to remind the apprentices of their rock cleaning duties.
Hookjaw was still sleeping outside the elder's cave.

Canyonpaw stormed into the camp and made right for the apprentice's den, dropping angrily into his nest and ignoring the grumble of hunger. He didn't want to eat, even if he did hunt for the clan today.
Burnstone watched the apprentice pass by, giving a slightly confused look towards Batecho.

Mooncliff had offered a greeting to Canyonpaw and began to tell him about cleaning up the rocks, when the apprentice just stormed right past. He frowned and glanced back in the direction he had come, spotting his sister heading for the fresh-kill pile. "Training not go so well?" Mooncliff walked into the apprentice den and over to Canyonpaw.

Canyonpaw faced away from the den entrance, giving a sharp shrug as he muttered. "Sure. I guess. But if I told you, you'd probably be on your sister's side..." He scowled lightly.

Mooncliff tilted his lip up in amusement. "Hey, I know better than anyone how hard my sister can be." He settled down to sit next to the apprentice, not concerned at the fact that Canyonpaw wouldn't look at him. "What happened?"

"We were training and practicing navigating the caves again, and then she dissapears and so I got mad at first and then I got worried so I ran back and found her, and it was all more training...but I hated it. I know it's supposed to be training, and I like Batecho's training...but I didn't like that." Canyonpaw blurted out.

Mooncliff hummed in understanding. "Unfortunately, that's a training exercise that all apprentices have to go through." He looked calmly at Canyonpaw. "There was a time when mentors didn't do that to their apprentices and in the caves, they were aloof and careless. A group of apprentices went in on their own and one of them got separated from the others, they got lost in the caves, but the other apprentices thought nothing of it and returned to camp without them. When asked where their friend was, they said he was still in the caves, the Clan panicked. No apprentice as young as they were was supposed to go into the caves alone." Mooncliff let out a heavy sigh. "That apprentice was never found. So it was then that the leader decreed that mentors would teach their apprentices the hard lesson of not leaving anyone behind, but slipping away from them in the caves. Once you lose a clanmate once, you will be ever the more vigilant to never lose them again."

"I don't care how important it is! At least tell me about all that first before you pull that kind of stunt on me! Is that how all training is going to be? Why should I trust any of you then." Canyonpaw barked, refusing to look at the deputy.
"Well you have your stupid session over with. I'll be more diligent but I sure don't like Batecho after that. She didn't give any context. And what if I fell into a crevice when she was gone, huh? What if I died all alone?" He cowered deeply.

"Mentors are only supposed to pull that 'trick' when their confident in their apprentice's abilities." Mooncliff curled his tail over his paws. "I'm actually surprised that Batecho did it to you this early, I guess she has more faith in you than I thought." He took a deep breath. "You weren't warned because if you knew it was going to happen, you wouldn't have felt that fear of losing your clanmate. The purpose of the exercise is to strengthen the bond between you and your Clan in how you worry and look out for each other, not drive a wedge because of your wounded pride."

Hookjaw was doing what Hookjaw always did: resting in a little divot outside the elder's den.
