Kalia was uncertain of how exactly she'd ended up here, especially with her sister, Melanie at her side. Kalia brushed back her dark, muddy colored, short wavy hair in exasperation. It mussed with the bandages surround her left eye, bothering it just slightly, but Kalia could care less at this moment. Her light blue eye, hidden away by a pair of round sunglasses, flickered across the surroundings, an obvious from crossing over her expression. This gave her an odd vibe and she was 100% sure that they had stumbled upon some sort of ghost town. They had to be lost, didn't they? She didn't know how large this place was, but it looked small, dusted and crumbling over from the lack of care. It was like being dragged back into the old western days. Everything was old-style. Who knows how long it'd been like this.
When Kalia cast her one good eye toward her much taller sister, she noted the displeased look on Melanie's paled, freckled face. Her scar on her left cheek pulled down in the frown. Of course, frowns were normal to see on Melanie's face, but it was obvious that this situation wasn't sitting well with her either.
"So uh, you 'know where we were going', huh?" Kalia teased hesitantly, but almost flinched as she thought about what her sister's response would be. She looked warily on toward Melanie, who turned a cold stare on her, with icy blue eyes of her own. The taller one brought her hands out of her brown sweater pouch and signed quickly, 'you're the one who suggested that left turn. What a great shortcut.'
The shorter sister then laughed nervously, now looking elsewhere other than her sister. This was a mess and despite the bad feeling this little ghost town was giving her, Kalia figured they might as well explore and find out where exactly they were and get home. Oh man, where would the food even be? Kalia thought is distressed, pulling her plaid red and black flannel from around her waist to put it on over her black tank-top. Maybe it was just her, but did it just get colder?

(these characters are sort of… animal-human mutant/hybrid dudes, if that’s okay! they’re also...kind of gay for each other but they dont talk about it, if that's important.)
As far as they knew, the two had been some of the only ones in the town for a long time. Others had passed through, but they hadn’t settled at all. There were no businesses, after all, and the land was poor when it came to agriculture, and there was a thin layer of dust on damn near every surface. But it was home for 20-year-old Hemingway and 18-year-old Taki Yamamura-- at least, it had been for a couple of years. They’d been hiding in the old ghost town and living off of wildlife and abandoned food stores. No one could catch them there.
“Yooo, Hemmy,” called Yamamura, who lay on his back in a bright patch of sunlight. His long, black hair was tied up with a string. A thin, scaly tail was curled like a whip at his side, and his pupils were black slits on yellow irises. He pointed to the sky. “Clouds. Like, more than just a few,” he said. “Think it’ll rain?” Hemingway had been striking an old match against a rock with thick, brown hands. The sparks would be useful later, when they would need meat. Black and pointed canine ears swiveled in Yamamura’s direction before Hemingway looked to him, and then followed the direction of his companion’s arm up to the mottled blue-white sky. “Maybe,” he said simply before running a hand through his dark and dreadlocked hair. He had a tail of his own, too, fluffy and colored like warm earth.

(( i don't mind c: as it states in the rules, p much any character is a-ok ))
Kalia jumped as a hand landed on her now clothed shoulder and her gaze snapped over toward her sister, irritation definitely there, clear as day on her face. Melanie rose an eyebrow, but gestured toward the town that Kalia had just been thinking about entering. It still looked rather frightening, though it wasn't enough to deter the brown-haired girl. A cloud drifting in front of the sun almost made it more ominous. Then again, it was probably due to how unusual to see such a place. Considering they've probably gone to places near this before. It was mind-boggling that they would just run into this now.
"That's where I was going, Mel." Kalia finally answered her sister, eyes rolling in amusement and started to venture out into the town. She could feel her sister's constant, comforting presence at her side. Melaine, however, was taking all of this in calmly. She may have heard a few superstitions about this town, but she was never gullible enough to go. Seeing that it truly did exist, the blonde wondered if some of the stories were true, too. Perhaps there was really some life left in this ghost town. Though, Melanie did notice Kalia's tense shoulders and hesitance in wondering through the town. She'd always been like that to things that looked abandoned, forgotten. As much as Melanie wanted to asked her sister why, she knew she'd only get a false answer, so it would be pointless.
At this point, the two of them had wandered into the middle of the town, surprisingly enough. Melaine stopped to look around and after a few more steps, Kalia stopped too, looking at her sister in curiosity. The wilderness was taking hold of this place and it was obvious. It would surprise Melaine if something were to collapse, but everything looked so old that Melanie wanted to find out why it'd been abandoned in the first place. In short, she wanted to stay awhile, but she hardly thought that Kalia would agree on this matter whole-heartedly.

Hemingway ran one hand along the chunk of wood he’d taken to sitting on-- it looked cut straight out of the middle of a fat tree trunk, a foot or two tall, with chipping bark on the outside. He laid the stone and dud match in his lap and narrowed his eyes. “Taki,” he said into the quiet. He inhaled through his nose-- there was a new scent in the air.
Yamamura s******ed so his upper body was propped up on his forearms, backs of his legs still touching the dusty ground. “Huh? What is it?” He saw how Hemingway was smelling their surroundings with that freakish lupine olfactory sense of his, and stuck out his own forked tongue. “Is that...people?” he asked, now fully sitting, legs criss-crossed.
With a tug at the white strap of his tanktop, he grimaced. Faint green scales could be seen running along his spine and the outsides of his upper arms. “Damn, I’m not dressed for company.
Sighing, Hemingway glanced both ways on the street where they’d taken up residence. “Worry about something normal,” he said. “Like-- if someone’s here to hurt us.”
Then he spotted someone-- two people-- wandering around from behind the corner up the road. The wolf-boy cursed and narrowed his eyes. We should hide, he thought.

(( it's alright. i just don't have too much longer since i have to go to band camp in a bit ))
Kalia wasn't entirely ok with the fact that they've stopped. She really just wanted to get out of this ghost town as soon as possible, but when she looked back over at Melanie, she noted the highly interested look as her sister looked about the run-down buildings. It was obvious that they were going to stick around longer than Kalia would have wanted to. If it made her sister happy, she would deal with it. However, she couldn't really shake the feeling that they were being watched, but her one good eye wasn't exactly the greatest with sight.
"Mel, I swear someone's looking at us." At Kalia's paranoid comment, Melanie glanced back at her from inspecting a sign that had broken and fallen to the ground. The blonde shook her head and signed back, 'no one's here' she paused and slowly added, 'probably'. Melanie offered her a small smile before it quickly disappeared and she went back to inspecting the sign that was apparently really interesting.
"You know, that doesn't help." Kalia practically whimpered, hugging herself as she looked around, staying in her spot. Even though she really wanted to run, the brown-haired girl wasn't about to leave Melanie by herself. Who know what kind of murders and what not were out there.

(oooh, band camp is a heck of a time. what instrument do you play?)
Hemingway got to his feet, walked to where Yamamura was sitting, and reached out a hand. “C’mon, up. We don’t know what these people are up to,” he said.
Yamamura took his sweet time, yawning as he grabbed Hemingway’s hand with both of his own and was pulled up. He looked around, eyes drowsy, and followed Hemingway.
A stick snapped beneath Yamamura’s foot, and the sharp, splintered wood pierced the thin socks he wore as well as the skin on his arch. “Jeeesus, f--” he began to call out. His tail curled in pain, and Hemingway was next to him, slipping a hand in front of his mouth to muffle the expletives.
“Quiet, Taki!” hissed Hemingway. His ears were pinned back in fear of what the strangers might do, now that they’d made a racket.

(( yeah it is, but it's fun nonetheless. i play baritone for marching season, but my main is trumpet c: ))
The crack of something in the distance had Kalia jumping almost five feet in the air, wild blue eye looking in the direction it came from. If her eyesight was bad, that meant her hearing was better, not that it was ever bad in the first place. Melanie, too had stood up, warily eyeing the distance and moving a hand to her sweater pouch where she kept her sheathed dagger just in case.
"Hey! Mel, what are you doing?!" Kalia gasped seeing her sister then walk passed her. She quickly latched onto her sister's brown, baggy sweater, fear clenching her heart. Although she did have a weapon too, she'd rather no harm anyone. It was usually Melanie's job to take care of things like that. The two couldn't quite see who'd made the sound, but Kalia had the feeling they would see who it was soon.
"Behind." Kalia jerked her head up to stare at her sister in amazement. This must have been serious if her sister spoke, even if it was just one single word. So, the smaller sister nodded, sticking close behind Melanie as they walked closer toward the sound. How Melanie could be this brave was mind-boggling to Kalia, but she learned long ago not to question her sister's actions. They would never make much sense.

(oooh, nice! i play mello/horn)
Hemingway’s eyes darted to the door of the nearest building, an old tavern, frowning. Their cover had been blown already, and as the strange people came into view, they looked less and less like the wacky scientist types that would sneak up on hybrids with scalpel in hand and slice them up.
Yamamura was still shaking splinters out of his foot, but his curses were whispered now that Hemingway had let go of him. “Ah, God…” he muttered, as specks of red began to dot the threadbare soles of his socks. “Hemmy, that hurt like a mother,” the snake-boy complained.
Rolling his eyes, Hemingway gave Yamamura a pat on the back and faced the newcomers quietly, with a stern gaze as his companion frowned at the broken stick.

(( oh pffft, the mellos are strange in my band. nice, but always in that weird little circle of theirs that i've been involved in on occasion. ))
When Melanie caught sight of the figures that had caused the sudden commotion, she wasn't entirely sure what to make of them, so she stood by silently, icy gaze watching them carefully. She was all too aware of her sister behind her, clutching to the back of her sweater. It was strange. Kalia's brave in social situations, but when it comes to new things or fights she's a complete mess. Melanie was the exact opposite, but she knew exactly how that happened, but now was not the time to be thinking about such things.
Kalia did a quick once-over with her single eye and immediately straightened, heading to Melanie's side. She didn't quite get the feeling of danger from these two, but she'd been deceived before, so Kalia was still very much cautious. "Hello!" Kalia chirped, a large friendly smile passing over her pale, freckled face."I wasn't aware there was still inhabitants of this... er, ghost town?" The smaller sister tilted her head, thinking about it. It wouldn't quite be considered a ghost town if there were still people living in there, even if they both looked a little...animalistic, but Kalia wasn't one to judge. She's seen many strange things throughout her life, seeing as she's 28.

(really? all the mellos in my band are a little weird, i guess, but it's a tiny section so a lot of us mostly hang out with people that play other instruments. a lot of my closest friends play flute & clarinet, lol. also, sorry for taking so long!)
“Hey, we’re okay, man,” Yamamura said, nudging Hemingway. He was limping a little on his uninjured foot, but stayed upright. “I don’t think these ladies’ll hurt us. ”
Hemingway eyed the strangers up and down. Maybe not, but we can’t know that they aren’t dangerous, he thought. He took in a breath and opened his mouth.
But Yamamura was quicker. “Heyy, hey.” He took a hobbling step toward the two strangers, waving. “You’re not from around here, huh? My friend over here is kinda skittish, but, ah, you two won’t hurt us, will ya?”

(( pff, yeah. there's at least 15 of them in my band and they bring in some people from the trumpet section sometimes which is like 20 people s o those circles get pretty large. it's alright! c: ))
Melanie stared at them warily, not entirely sure what to think. Her hand was still tightly grasping the dagger in her sweater pouch. She was never one to trust easy, but neither was Kalia either. Melanie's icy blue gaze flickered down to her sister who laughed awkwardly at the limping stranger's question. The brown haired girl patted her sister's arm with an awkward grin, "Of course not! Well, ah, so as long as you don't hurt us but, nah, we just happened to get lost and stumble our way in."
Of course, the taller sister got the message. Relax. They had odd communication like that, but the blonde's hand slipped from her pouch and crossed her arms. She loomed behind her sister as usual, silent and watching the interaction. Being alert never really hurt anyone, and seeing at these two...humans? Were strangers, she wasn't going to let her guard down like her sister had.

(that's so many! our band is only, like, a hundred people or so, and the horn section this year has just six members)
Yamamura gave Hemingway a smug look. “See, Hemmy, these are some nice people,” the snake boy pointed out. He clucked his tongue and muttered, more quietly. “Also, we haven’t talked to anyone else in ages.”
Hemingway’s browline softened, but he pursed his lips. Suddenly he felt the wind along his, well, his fur-- on his ears and tail. And Taki’s scales are on full display, too, he thought.
Oblivious, Yamamura hobbled another step towards the strangers. “We won’t hurt ya. Right, Hemingway?” He gave the wolf-boy a thumbs up. “My name is Taki Yamamura. Usually, I go by my last name. He--” Yamamura pointed a finger over his shoulder at his dark-skinned companion, “goes by Hemingway, and nothing else.”

(( oh, really? that's so small! we have at least 160ish members this year. i think our flute section is the biggest with 22 people? ))
"Yamamura and Hemingway." Kalia tested out the names, glanced at the two as she said their names as well. Despite them appearing different as normal people, they still acted human? And that was good enough in Kalia's book. She then grinned, and cheerfully responded, "those are cool names! Can't say the same about ours." She shrugged, but gestured to her sister, who still remained tensed, face pretty much emotionless. However, that was normal, so Kalia thought nothing of it.
"Tall, dark, and broody over here is Melanie. She doesn't talk--" Kalia then gestured to herself, hand over her chest, "and my name's Kalia. We're sisters, obviously. Nice to meet you two! Ah, how long have you two been living here, then? This place looks like it can't support, well, anything."

(our largest sections have i think 17 people? that's the flutes, clarinets, and trumpets each, believe it or not lol)
Hemingway gave a resigned sigh, folded his arms loosely in front of his chest, and took a few steps toward these people, Melanie and Kalia. The hairs on the back of his neck fell, no longer raised like the hackles of a wary animal. He eyed Yamamura, before speaking to them. Let me handle this bit, his eyes said.
“It’s nice to meet you two. We’ve, um, been here a couple years…” Hemingway scratched at his ear. “There wouldn’t be enough stuff to support a town, but for a few people it’s alright,” he said with finality.
Yamamura avoided Hemingway’s eyes and focused on Melanie and Kalia. He cupped a hand around his mouth, pretending to hide what he said from his companion. His voice wasn’t any quieter, though. “Y’know, he thinks we can pretend we’re normal people, and other people will just go along with it, I think,” he said, quickly, half a grin on his face. “But you two are smart, and obviously we don’t look normal.”

(( oh wow. ours are so unbalanced. but tbh even w/ the overpowering flute section, we still can't hear them. ))
To follow along, Kalia covered the side of her own mouth, a teasing smile crossing her face. "I maybe be partially blind, but it's clear you two aren't normal. But--!" Kalia straightened up, large grin replacing the previous look, "I'm not gonna ask any questions. Though, wouldn't say the same about my sister here. She's chalk full--." This time she was cut of by a mere pinch to her side by said sister. "Ow! Mel!" Kalia narrowed her eyes up at the taller sister, who looked blankly on back. The movement of Melanie's hands got her attention quickly.
'Don't spread false facts. I won't ask either.' The new, exasperated look filtered onto Melanie's face and Kalia cocked an eyebrow and said in teasing curiosity, "reeeally? Not even one? Wow, are you ok?" The blonde only huffed in response and went back to her usual quiet indifference.

(rip the flutes tbh) Hemingway huffed, stepping forward. “I do not think they-- won’t notice. It just didn’t seem like the right time,” he explained to Yamamura, who turned to face him. “We can probably answer questions,” he said with a gentler voice to Melanie and Kalia. Yamamura pointed at them. “As long as you don’t plan to kill us, or tell anyone we’re here,” he said, grinning. “But I don’t think either of you would do that.”
