yeah! having a separate language for pokemon that they speak, and then having most trainer-owned pokemon speak english (': this means that wild pokemon would have to be taught if they wanted to be taught, that sort of thing.

For nearly five years, Riley Grey had been the Champion of Johto. It was just one of those things, really. He'd originally set out on his mission to become 'the very best' with a Cyndaquil, had learned about the vague systems in place that tried (and failed) to protect wild Pokemon. It was a cruel world, but there had been nothing he could do. He'd found out that Gyms were crueler than anticipated, that they didn't care about safety regulations as much as the television made it out to be. He'd learned the hard way that Pokemon didn't just faint during a battle - they often died. Wounds went untended, damage became irreversible. Turnover rates were high - had always been high - for those working in the battling industry. Learning everything the hard way had been a shock, had temporarily dampened his spirits. Then, naturally, he'd gotten back on his feet.
But in time, the flame slowly began to dim. He'd become the Champion and sure, that had been fine for a while. He was paid well, and he'd learned how to take care of his Pokemon before they could get to a nurse - he had a low turnover rate for someone in his industry. His Pokemon were well-trained, and they fought like their lives depended on it. Hell, their lives did depend on it. Trainers didn't want the previous Champion to usurp them once they got back on their feet, so it was natural for them to attempt to kill. It was tiring. He had become tired of it.
He hadn't lost a battle. Had come close multiple times, but hadn't lost. He'd kept his throne for years upon years, and his fatigue became stronger. There was less for him here, he had money and he had his companions, and even they were worn down. His close partner, someone who'd been with him from his starter's death up until now - he was battle-scarred and tired. Tai was a beast of an Arcanine, was legendary not only in Johto but in Kanto and various other regions. He was not only giant for his species, but also strong. The strongest in Grey's team, he always held them up in a bad situation. The highest level, the strongest movepool, the ability to out-manoeuvre targets smaller than him. In every way, he was a star. But he, too, was exhausted. Scars parted the fur of his pelt, one of them between his eyes from an attempted murder. He was not an old Pokemon - not in the slightest. He was in his prime, but he was so exhausted. So tired of the same old thing, the same goal. He wanted to rest, and it was rest that Grey would give him.
"I'm going to Sinnoh," he announced, on a rather rainy day. The duo were sat outside the League - which was closed for the season. Their small break, when Victory Road closed so that the League could readjust and sort out their roster, so they could find new candidates for the Elites. "I don't know for how long."
Tai tilted his head and squinted for a moment, ears perked forward and tail moving back and forth in a lazy motion. He was relaxed, the line of muscle along his back proving so.
"I," he repeated softly, still accented after these years. "Not we?"
"Not we," Grey confirmed gently, crossing his ankles and leaning forward. "You should rest. I can arrange for you to go to my parents' farm, and you can help out there, if you wish. I have an interim-Champion coming in, she'll be able to work while I'm away. The only ones I'm taking with me are Shiloh, Camilla, Caius, and Sai."
"Sai deserves to grow up in a good environment," the Pokemon mused thoughtfully, turning his head to look behind him at the League. "Is it for her sake that you're leaving?" he paused to look at Grey, who nodded. "Understandable. Her mother would probably kill you if you hurt her baby. Adventuring another region would be good for her training."
Grey didn't respond, instead choosing to close his eyes. It was there that they sat for whoever knew how long, just...appreciating the company. They were used to each-other, they were partners - but they hadn't had a proper break. For Tai to go to the family farm and for Grey to go to another region, it was good. They would be able to rest, and then they could come back when they were ready.
The very next day, Grey made his preparations. His father agreed for Tai to go to the farm - agreed, even, for the rest of the team to go. He then arranged transport for himself to go to Sinnoh, and it was with a parting wave that he split up with his team. For how long, he wasn't too sure. Maybe a few months, maybe even a year or two. However long it took him to get back his spark, however long it took Tai to rest and recover. They all needed to have the fire, but he knew that he did, most of all. If the trainer didn't have their heart in it, then the Pokemon wouldn't, either.
Sinnoh was a region he hadn't explored before. He'd explored many when he'd been a trainer and not a Champion. It was how he'd set up his team, how he'd made sure he had variety. But none of them came on his journey - just the few that he needed. Others, of course, were in PC Boxes - he could get a couple out and switch around, if he needed to. As long as Sai came along, he was good.
Sai was a bred Pokemon, and on top of that, a lucky catch. Not only was her movepool diverse (she had Egg Moves, inherited from her parents), but she was golden. A golden Vulpix, of all things. He'd learned about the colour variant of Pokemon before - shiny Pokemon. The breeder that he'd bought her from had been sad to part with her, but had been glad that someone in such a high place was willing to buy her. Sai, herself, was clueless; she was a baby, and he intended to baby her for as long as he could. At present, the little Pokemon was settled in his arms, dozing with her muzzle on his arm.
It wasn't long until they were in Sinnoh. It was strange to be here; there was a different sort of atmosphere. Hell, it was colder, too. With baby Pokemon in his arms and nothing but a shoulder-bag, he left the Jubilife Airport and walked through the city at a brisk pace. He wanted to get to Sandgem Town. To the Pokemon Lab. It was a good place to start, to see how research was going and to meet the Professor of the region.
The walk was longer than he'd anticipated, and without knowledge of the wildlife, he didn't really want Sai to walk on her own - but, since she insisted, he released Shiloh from his Pokeball and set the little fox down.
"Shiloh, can you make sure she doesn't end up in danger if she strays?" he asked.
Without a word, the Umbreon nodded and pounced forward to follow Sai. Grey watched them carefully, tried to keep them in his sightline. He saw a little Shinx growl and mewl at them, but dismissed it. Its mother was likely around, and he didn't want to mess with a Luxray this early into his time here. It made him wonder if the Sinnoh wildlife were socialised - already, this route seemed wilder than most. It didn't have a proper path, instead had mud that was flattened, unable to grow any grass due to the feet that walked over it on a daily basis. It was an interesting thought, nonetheless. Many places were wild, but for an entire region to have this atmosphere - interesting.
Eventually, he reached his destination. Sai, still full of energy, chirped as she bounced forward with her bodyguard, little paws working to make sure she stayed ahead of her trainer. She stopped, rather suddenly, in front of the Laboratory - as if she knew where Grey wanted to go. Then again, it was rumoured that the Ninetales line had some sort of psychic connection, but he expected that she'd just figured out where he was going. She was smart, after all, despite being so young. Her little white tail wagged madly as she waited for him to catch up.
He pushed open the door and waited for both Pokemon to enter before closing it, and quickly picked her up so that she didn't disrupt any of the scientists. A couple of them smile at him.
"Hello," he greeted, "I'm here to see the Professor."
