Tigerstar’s Birthday
Another day, another sunrise. It was just your average day in ShadowClan. Well, as average as it could be. Ever since Tigerstar had taken over as leader, it had been different. But, it wasn’t necessarily bad. Just more fast-paced as the former ThunderClan deputy trained those who were able to in the art of battle. As that was a big change in the life of the clan, it had been strange. Once they got used to it, though, it was kind of fun. Other than the hardcore battle training, life in ShadowClan was low-key.
That is, until this one particular day.
“Blackfoot!” Tigerstar’s angry roar rang out over the ShadowClan clearing, reaching the ears of the ShadowClan deputy. He had been resting in a lovely patch of sunshine when the leader called out to him, causing him to jerk and groan at the voice of his leader.
He dragged himself across the clearing to his leader, his eyes drooping as he tried to stay awake. “What, Tigerstar?” he grumbled. “What is it that you could possibly need? I trained so many cats today. I just want a nap.”
Tigerstar growled at him. “This is quite important, Blackfoot,” he said. “As my deputy, you should be ready to come running when I need you. Now, into my den. I need to meet with you and Runningnose.”
As the two entered the den, Runningnose glanced up from his paws and gave a weak nod. “Sit down,” Tigerstar said, motioning with his tail to a spot next to the sniffly medicine cat. The deputy obeyed promptly, though with his tail dragging and paws plodding, he seemed rather reluctant to do so.
“Now, then. Let’s get down to business.” Tigerstar promptly began the meeting with a wave of his paw when Blackfoot was settled. “As you may or may not know, in four sunrises, it will be my birthday.”
Deputy and medicine cat glanced at each other with puzzled looks before turning back to their leader. Tigerstar sat there, staring at them, happiness plastered on his face, an abnormal change from his regular attitude.
Runningnose hesitantly raised a paw, and quietly asked, “Um, forgive me, but… what is a birthday?”
Tigerstar’s face froze for a moment, then drained of delight. “Well, it’s… a celebration of the anniversary of the day my mother gave birth to me.” He spread his lips and revealed his teeth into what could qualify as a grin, but certainly would not win any best smile contests any time soon. “You know?”
“No, we don’t know,” Blackfoot replied with a sigh.
Tigerstar’s ears promptly drooped, and he sighed. “I’m sorry,” he mumbled. “I should’ve known that ShadowClan would never bother to learn of the traditions of ThunderClan. Well, it hasn’t been done for seasons, but I wanted to revive it. A birthday can be such a joyous event, but since neither of you know what it is, nor want to learn…” He glanced down at the ground and let out a mournful sigh.
“No, no, great leader! I want to learn! I do!” Blackfoot cried. “Please don’t be sad. Teach us about this... special event where we… er… celebrate when you were born?”
“Yes, sir! What Blackfoot said!” Runningnose’s head wobbled in agreement, his eyes bright.
“Good, good!” Tigerstar’s excited attitude returned, and he perked up. “Now,” he said, switching to authority mode, “it is time to begin planning and organizing. I have special tasks for both of you, which you will carry out with the help of your clanmates. Blackfoot!”
“Yes, sir!” Blackfoot crowed, raising one paw in a salute to his beloved leader.
“You are in charge of decorations. You will take several volunteers with you to gather plants, rocks, whatever you can find to make this place look pretty. And to give you a hint, I like camellias best. They smell good.”
“As you wish, your tiger-ness,” Blackfoot said with a bow. He promptly exited the den, calling out to several warriors, explaining to them what his leader had just said.
“And you, Runningnose!”
“Yes, sir.”
“You are in charge of one of the most important elements: the cake.”
“The... what?”
