O R I G I N S
Your story now begins at the end.
For many moons you walked the valley below, serving your Clan and kin as you were meant to by your station. Perhaps as a hunter you chased prey in the green foothills, keeping your mouth closed and head down so as to avoid inciting wrath from those with power over you. Or, perhaps you were a warrior, harsh and cruel, and meant only to incite fear into those you were told to control. No matter what you were, eventually there came a disaster: something you could not fight or avoid or plead with. Eventually, you died.
Your story, however, did not end there. Perhaps you were guided by visions of those you had lost, or chased here by those you thought you had outlived. Or, perhaps you simply closed your eyes, and when you woke again it was here in this foggy twilight forest where you found yourself.
You may be asking, "Where is here?" The answer is nowhere, and everywhere at the same time. It goes by many names. Silverpelt. StarClan's hunting grounds. The Dark Forest. The Place of No Stars. Here and now, they are all one and the same. Perhaps you have heard stories of these places, that they were all distinct and different from one another. Perhaps once that was true, but it is no more. The spirits of all dead cats come here, good or evil, and the afterlife is not so peaceful as you may have thought.
When RavenClan lost its connection with StarClan, and the lines between good and evil became so blurred that they are practically nonexistant, so did these lines blur between StarClan and the Dark Forest. As the generations of the living continued with no memory of their ancestors, the spirits of StarClan lost their power and faded one by one, until all but a small few were gone. Having lost their Clanmates' faith, and their power, the Dark Forest was no longer kept at bay, and was allowed to sink its decaying roots into StarClan's own hunting grounds, the two seeping into each other until they were indistinguishable. With that came the evil spirits who lurked in the Place of No Stars, and now the good spirits of StarClan must fight tooth and claw to keep their souls intact, desperately hoping that one day the Dark Forest will be walled away once again. Until then, all any cat can do is do their best not to be extinguished. Now, one question remains.
Even in death, do you have the strength to live?

"The Black Sky" is what cats have begun calling this new afterlife, the dreary union of Silverpelt and the Dark Forest. It is a seemingly-endless, foggy forest that seems to be trapped in an eternal twilight. The hazy fog which fills the forest extends to the sky, blotting out all stars. Just above the "western" horizon is the land's only source of life: a burning red disk which shines through the mist, the sun trapped in eternal sunset. The forest itself, besides the continuous fog, seems mostly normal: it consists of massive trees, mostly conifers and evergreens, which tower into the sky, with sometimes sparse, sometimes thick underbrush that cover rocky hills. However, not everything is so pleasant. Everything always seems to be covered in some layer of decay: the forest floor is damp and musty, and the forest is interspersed with stagnant pools of muddy water. The twisted, broken trees are covered with slimy moss and fungus. Some prey chatters in the forest, but it is elusive, and interspersed with massive owls which can- and will, on occasion- carry away a full grown cat.
The territory of the Black Sky seems to shift as much as the fog, making it difficult for cats to find their way around, and taking the same path twice may not lead you to the same location. However, one thing in the territory does seem to remain constant: everything seems to center around a massive clearing, at the center of which is a small lake (or a large pond, depending on how one looks at it). While standing near the pool, it is possible to hear snippets from the living world, but making out anything more than faint murmurs is nigh impossible. When the water is exceptionally flat, one might even be able to make out the movements of the living; however, the water is dark and murky, and the shapes are distant and blurry, and because of the muddy quality of the pool, there is no way to speak to the living, to send them guidance or omens. The best one can hope for is to catch an image or word just clear enough to make out. Several of the older members of StarClan are trying to work out a way to communicate with the living, but how- and what they would say that could possibly help- know one is quite sure of.
Within the Black Sky are the spirits of all RavenClan cats who die, regardless of their age, status, or morality. Good and evil- and those in-between- are all thrown here together, with no rules or separation. Here, the cruel warriors can release their deepest bloodlust without consequence, while the meek hunters and good cats of StarClan can only hope to survive, and defend the others where possible, until the living sort things out. Here, it is possible for any spirit to be killed for a second time. Usually, this must be done at the claws of another cat, as it seems that cats here are far more resilient than the living, and thus most natural phenomenon- such as high falls- won't hurt them as badly. Still, a direct drop from the higher branches of the trees would be enough to kill a cat, as would being crushed by a trunk or boulder, or being drowned, but these are more difficult to accomplish. So, cats must mostly resort to killing one another. When an already-dead cat is killed again in the Black Sky, the spirits refer to it as being "extinguished."
This page is the "spirit" page associated with RavenClan.

Literacy - This is intended to be a fairly literate roleplay, so please do your best to keep up with that standard. What I don't expect is a novel every single post; it's not always possible, and it's not always what's best for the situation. What I do expect every post is quality: good grammar, consistent characterization, and plot progression. The latter is particularly important; while obviously not every single post will have a major plot point, I don't want this roleplay cluttered with "bait" posts where cats just sit around waiting for someone else to interact with them. Every post should contribute to the story in some way, even if it's a very small way.
Rating - Please keep this forum-appropriate. As I'm sure you can tell from the previous section, there are a lot of very dark themes that are present in this Clan, including the potential for heavy violence, abuse, and a great many things that could make people very, very uncomfortable. Please handle the more mature themes with respect, and don't romanticize abuse and cruelty. Don't make things too gory, or anything else that could draw unwanted attention from moderators. If you feel the need to do any of these things, please do it in PM where it is legally out of my control.
Activity - I'm reluctant to make any especially black-and-white rules on activity, since in any roleplay- and especially more literate ones- activity comes and goes. It depends on the day of the week, the time of day, the time of year, what's going on in the roleplay, and of course what's going on in everyone's real lives. That said, I expect you to try to keep up with whatever the current level of activity is. So, if posts are being made every day and things are going along at a steady pace, try not to vanish for a week. If things have lulled to a halt, don't worry about not posting for a couple days. The main thing is, don't trap other peoples' characters with your characters and events, and if you play an important character (high ranking, or important for a plot) try to be available when you're needed. Not necessarily at the exact second, but within a day or so. If your activity is causing issues with plot progression, your character may be removed from their rank or role.
Characters - Please keep characters realistic. This goes for appearance as well as personality. Please no sues, or obviously unnatural appearances. Since this is fiction, it doesn't always have to be 100% natural, but it has to remain believable (for example, in real life you probably wouldn't see a gray cat with black spots, or a calico tom, but those could be done in the roleplay, within reason). Things that are not natural at all- such as red or purple eyes, perfect star-shaped markings, glowing eyes or pelts, and that sort of thing- will not be accepted. As for personality, skills, and that sort of thing.... every cat has flaws, and every cat has strengths. Try to keep them balanced. Of course, some cats will be overall better, while others will be overall worse, but few will be exclusively good or exclusively bad.
