Mia almost collapsed with relief when Drake pulled her into the crowd. She stayed close to him as they danced, so they could talk to one another over the music without too many people listening in on their conversation. "I don't know what I would've done if you hadn't saved me from her," Mia mumbled, stepping aside as some sophomore boy bumped into her.
"I just froze up when she came over to me and Mason," she said, her head close to his so he could hear her even with the music. "Did Jack send you?" She'd spotted Jack talking to Drake earlier during the party, but her brother was nowhere to be found at the moment.
She wanted to actually talk with Drake, but that was hard to do while they were dancing. Maybe talking to someone besides Jack about Adriane would help and Mason didn't seem like he'd be much help when it came to talking about the other girl.
She wanted to just have fun and dance with him, but couldn't stop thinking about what had occurred so far at the party.
***
Sophia smiled at Jace while the went out onto whatever part of the house had turned into a dance floor.
"Do you ever play guitar for people? I'm not talking about pretty girls that you like, I'm talking about like turning off the music here and playing for the crowd," she said. She didn't think she'd ever heard Jace play, but if he was good, that might be a good way to help him make friends.
A talent like music was pretty darn cool. Too bad Sophia wasn't any good at it.
***
"Sorry, I'm still kind of in big brother mode. I was keeping an eye on Sophia and Mia the whole time," he said with a laugh. "And I swear I'm not here to talk about Mia."
"You've been trying to cut ties with her, but..." Jack trailed off, trying to get Mason to say more. This is what he did when he tried to help Carter with things. Hopefully Carter wouldn't have problems like these when he was Mason's age.
"She's not good for you, so you want to forget about her, but you can't? She's just got this hold on you?" Jack asked. He didn't want to look Mason in the eyes, knowing that would make the other by even less likely to accept his help.
"I don't know much about either of you. Only what Mia told me and that's mostly about Adriane. So, Mason, what you need to do is think. Do you really like her? Do you really want her in your life? Or is she making you think you need her?" he asked. "Now, I don't know her. All I know is what she did to Mia in middle school, so that's why I'm leaving it up to you to think instead of telling you my opinion," he said, picking at his fingernail.
"Look, I know I don't really know you or Adriane or anything, but, on a much smaller scale, I had a similar problem when I was about your age," he said. "All I'm asking is that you give me a chance to help you with this."
***
Chase grabbed another juice box. "We should make a company that sells adult sized juice boxes. It's more convenient than pouring out juice, but you don't get enough in the kid's size. We'll be millionaires - No, billionaires," Chase said. He laughed and sipped at his juice box.
"And that's a good point. I mean, Arlo and Keilana already know I made it and it might be tough to hide from Jace. I mean, I don't know how often that boy is in here, but nobody else does need to go. And once they're all gone, we can each have as big of a slice as we'd like."
(It's so weird going from writing Jack to Chase right now XD)

"Ooh, was that a smile? I saw that!" Keilana grinned, silently congratulating herself on a job well done. Maybe it wasn't exactly directed towards her, but it absolutely counted, so she considered it a win. "No, it was not directed towards you. It was directed at all the boys who feel the need to jump and hit the top of doorways, and all the boys that think making unsavory comments is how you get a girl. But calling yourself cool just means you're not as cool as you think you are!" She sang that last part cheerfully, mostly to be teasing about it. "Well, I sometimes jump to hit the top of a doorway, but so does Chase. I think it's like some primal instinct ingrained in boys so much that we can't stop it. You know, like burping and trying to be cool," he said. Again, he felt a smile coming. This time, however, he pushed it back and scowled like he'd had so much practice doing. "But I am cool. You know, that's the thing. Chase is the lovable dork, and I'm the cool, mysterious jock hat doesn't care about anything. Chase puts efforts into his classes, and I'm smart. We each have our own thing. I'm the cool one. That's how it works and you can't argue," Arlington said

{I'm back on my computer but I do have to leave again in an hour haha.
Oh, Mason...}
"Hmm, I wouldn't say you don't care about anything," Keilana said, visibly amused. Her sweet, somewhat devilish smile hadn't left her face. It was cute, the way he was trying to act cooler than he was. She wasn't going to admit that though. She had the feeling he would either get mad at her or she would end up feeding into his ego. She wanted to keep this teasing game going on for a bit longer. "You obviously care about your family. And being cool, which you aren't. I am absolutely going to continue arguing with you about that."

"You probably would have tried to physically fight her, and then lose." Drake replied with a joking laugh. It was supposed to be a joke, but Drake also kind of felt like that would be what would happen.
"Jack did send me, but it was probably for the best." He laughed. He took Mia's hand and spun her around. "We can go somewhere quiet if you want to talk about what happened?"
--
Jace shook his head. "And I've only eved played the guitar for one girl." The memory made his heart hurt for a brief moment. Why did she have to move away in high school after he was happy?
"I used to play the guitar for Ash and our stuffed animals when I was little, and by little I mean like thirteen, if that counts." It had made Ash happy!
--
Mason laughed. He walked across the room and looked out the window into their expansive backyard. Man, he wished he had a house like this when he was growing up.
"You might have a similar problem, but I really don't think you'd understand." He answered. No one quite understood. It wasn't as simple as deleting her number out of his room.
Even if he wanted to do that, he couldn't. "You're a good guy. I am not. Which makes our situations different." He said and sipped his beer.
He thought about what Jack had said. Did he truly love Adriane? Why was he holding on? And at about that moment, Mason knew what he would need to do. "Alright, you can give me your advice."
--
"You, sir, are a genius. Now I don't even have to go to college." Ash said teasingly. She sipped her apple juice and realized she had emptied it. Wow. Chase made a good point.
"So we just get everyone out as quickly as possible. And if Arlo or Keilana ask about the cake, we just ask like there is no cake." She suggested. Make them think they were crazy. "My slice is going to be half of the cake."
((I agree. XD One tense situation, and one happy one.))

Mia didn't respond to the first comment. Instead, she took Drake's hand when he spun her. "You got some moves," she said, then nodded. "Yeah, that's probably a good idea. I need someone to talk to besides Jack," she almost laughed a bit at that. Jack was practically her best friend, but he was extremely biased and always sided with Mia.
"Lets head somewhere else," she said. Still grasping Drake's hand, she pulled him down the hall and into the first open room she could find. "So where do you want me to start?" she asked.
***
It sounded like there was more to the story of this one girl, but Sophia didn't push. Jace didn't seem to want to talk about it, so she would push. "Awww, that's adorable," Sophia said, smiling. "Do you want to play for more people, or just stick to Ash and this mystery girl?" she asked.
The song changed, causing Sophia to pause, but then she continued speaking. "I mean think about it. It sounds like your music Is morally kept in private. If you get past that and share it with people, I'm sure talking to them will be a whole lot easier."
***
"You may not think you're a good guy, Mason, but I know you have a heart in there. Plus, you're what? 17? 18? 19? You still have time to change," Jack said. He leaned forward, elbows on his knees.
"Like I said, my problem was a lot simpler than yours. I was struggling in a couple of my classes because my girlfriend at the time convinced me it didn't matter. We were out all night, causing trouble and I was threatened with being expelled. It was Mia that told me I needed to figure out if I actually loved he or not. I didn't," he said. Luckily, that was a time in Jack's life that very few people knew about. He was embarrassed about it.
"Also, like I said, I don't know much about you and all I know about her is what Mia said. Give me your side of things," Jack said.
***
"That's it! Party's over. Let's kick people out," Chase said, laughing. He finished another juice box and threw it away before grabbing another. The two of them would be through this pack before they knew it.
"See? It's perfect. We kick everyone out. Send Jace out with Arlo and Keilana to do some errand, then we each eat half the cake and discuss our new adult juice box line," Chase said.
"Perfect ending to the perfect night."

Arlo cleared his threat and nodded towards the house. "We should, uh, probably head in now," he said. "Knowing Chase, he's already gotten himself in some kind of trouble," he said. "But the house isn't on fire, so that's good, I guess," he said, looking once more to make sure it wasn't burning down. "Also, no screaming. No birds hopped up on energy drinks. Huh, maybe he isn't as stupid as he used to be." Though his words were harsh, his tone showed appreciation for his brother.

((I love the name Emmet. XD))
Drake laughed and followed after Mia. After they entered the room, he looked around. Spare bedroom. Sweet. Grinning, he belly flopped onto the bed and then rolled over onto his back to look at Mia. He patted the bed beside him. "Start wherever the heck you feel like. I'm just here to listen."
--
Jace shrugged. "I mean, I would, but what if people don't like it and throw tomatoes at me? I'm not a fan of flying tomatoes." He pointed out. "I don't think it would help me meet people. What if they're just attracted to my music, and not me?" He was going to school for a degree in music, but that was beside the point. That would be helping others produce songs.
--
Mason laughed. Jack's story sounded a lot like his, minus the whole being able to get out of things. Mason was trapped, or at least that's how he felt. Or was it? Maybe he did really enjoy the attention from Adriane, the relationship when it was good.
"Please, I don't know why you feel the need to hear my side of the story, and I don't exactly feel like sharing it." He replied. It was sad. Pitiful. A flurry of emotions and bad decisions that had led him to here, drinking beer while he thought about how he had had to drop out of school.
And yet, in the end, he wouldn't have changed a single minute of it for anything.
--
Ash grabbed another juice box, sipping this one more slowly. "If I could get them out, I would. That cake looks good." She said and looked at it with a little frown.
"But if we ate an entire cake, would we get a sugar high?" Not that she was necessarily opposed to a sugar high, although shaking with excitement might not be horribly fun.
"Aww, apple juice and cake makes a night perfect for you?" She asked with a laugh.

Mia locked the door behind them and laid down next to Drake. She folded her hands on her stomach and stared up at the white of the ceiling. "Well, i guess i should start by saying that I've never had many friends. You see, everyone in my family is successful and it's just expected that i am too. Because of that, I had to work really hard in school and never had many friends. That lead to me not feeling very great about myself. And I still don't, but it's gotten better."
"Anyway, Adriane used to be one of my good friends. I trusted her and shared my secrets with her. Well, then the incident happened. I was embarrassed in front of the whole school. They laughed at me and Adriane tortured me with the memory of it for a while. There were rumors and gossip that I'm guessing we're started by her. That ended our friendship," Mia said, frowning. It still hurt to be betrayed by someone that she had trusted.
"I just got more into my work. I'm aiming for one of the best vet schools in the country. So I didn't really do much to make friends and my self confidence was pretty low. Luckily, I didn't see Adriane after the incident. You know, I was in these high level classes and we didn't cross paths much," she said. That would bring them up to tonight.
"Jack and Sophia dragged me here because I need to have fun. That's what they said. I need to relax. They claimed I could still be successful and take some time for myself. Well, after we set up the music, Mason and I got to talking. I ended up sharing a little bit of what I shared with you, but not as much, and Mason agreed that I needed to have fun. It was different talking to someone besides Jack and Sophia. It felt like he was a real friend," she smiled, laughing a bit at the memory of how her night had been going. Now came the hard part.
"Then Adriane came. For the first time in a while, memories of the incident came back and I was frozen. I felt some mixture of embarrassment and sadness. Mason left and I just couldn't stand to walk away and let Adriane win, but I didn't know what else to say or do. That's when you came in and saved the day. Or Jack did. Or both of you, I guess. And now we're here," she said. She frowned, glad she wasn't facing Drake. She hadn't shared this much with anyone besides Jack.
"And that's just the condensed version. I don't want to bore you with all the details," she said with a sigh. Reliving it was tough, but it also felt good to get everything out.
***
"No one will throw tomatoes at you. If they do, I'll beat them up," Sophia promised with a laugh. "And who caes if they're attracted your music? That'll give you a great conversation piece and then you can start talking about that. Conversation will evolve and eventually you'll move into other topics and they'll see how great you are, Jace."
***
"You don't need to share it, but then I'll get a better view of the situation. Cause like I said, I know pretty much nothing. I mean, I can rely on just Mia's description of Adriane, but hers might be a lot different that yours," Jack said with a bit of a laugh.
"Plus, nothing you say will leave this room. I won't even tell Mia I had a little chat with you," he promised.
Jack hadn't had very many huge difficulties in his life, but he figured Mason's story might be a bit difference. And he wanted to help the younger boy out, but he could only do that if Mason shared some part of his story. He didn't need to go in detail about his childhood, but maybe just a little bit about his relationship would help.
***
"Or we hide out in a locked room until someone finds us passed out in a puddle of melted ice cream and chocolate," Chase said. "Um, i guess we'll only know if we try it."
"Hey, I think we've established that I'm barley more than a child," he said with a laugh.
