Nicholai listened curiously to Zephyr explain his good news, and another smile tugged at his lips to see the other's happiness. If only there were more people like Zephyr to care for the creatures who needed it. "They were all quite fortunate to have you tending to them," he decided "Most others would've done quite the opposite." Including himself perhaps.

His cheeks flushed darker and his eyes brightened even further at the praise, smiling up at Nicholai. 'Thankyou.' He softly said, before glancing shyly away. 'There's a place nearby that serves Italian style food if you'd like that? It's small, family-owned.'

At the suggestion of the Italian restaurant, Nicholai nodded. "I've never actually had Italian food," he admitted, slightly awkward "So, it wouldn't hurt to try it." 80% of his diet was Russian dishes he put together himself, because most "American" food scared him to be honest. "Lead the way," he invited Zephyr, curious about their now set destination.

Zephyr laughed softly and led them towards the restaurant a few streets over. He headed inside and greeted the owner in Italian, before taking a seat and handing the menu to Nicholai. 'I like the soups, lasagne and homemade potato skins. It's proper home cooked stuff.'

Nicholai took the menu with a thanks before proceeding to look through it. He eventually decided on trying out the homemade potato skins, choosing at random since he hadn't had anything on the menu at all before. "Perhaps I can convince you to try Russian food," he spoke thoughtfully "Should this go well, and we decide on meeting up again?" Not that it was a must. Just being in Zephyr's company was oddly contenting. He could only imagine what would happen if a typical Witcher came across him. How odd for him to show such concern for a witch, having not done so for the other handful of witches he'd spared.

'Sure.' He softly replied, smiling at him, before ordering tomato and mozzerella soup with a side of the potato skins. He then settled and waited for them to arrive, turning his gentle gaze onto Nicholai to study him. 'Why did you become a witcher?'

Nicholai paused, and almost said he didn't want to answer. "Killing things is in my family's blood," he answered slowly "I was bred for no other purpose, according to my father, and was denied anything else while living with him." Too bad his father didn't have anymore kids, because Nicholai didn't like or want to have children, so no continuation of the bloodline. Plus, he liked men. "If I'd stayed within his range of influence instead of being sent to Lyria by my mother, you and I probably would've had a very different interaction." Nicholai was different mostly because he developed a sense of mercy, which most Witchers didn't have.

Nicholai was different mostly because he developed a sense of mercy, which most Witchers didn't have. He blinked slowly as he patiently listened, head tilted. 'I see.' He curiously replied, intrigued by his story. 'I guess we both have daddy issues then.' He playfully said, a grin spreading across his lips.

Nicholai laughed softly, saying "I suppose so." It always seemed to be the males in a family that caused the problems, so it wasn't surprising. "They're both dead though, so at least new problems have ceased." Well, new problems caused directly by their fathers anyway. "You never did get around to telling me why you're a target to others though." Unless it was just other witches being afraid of Zephyr, like the bug people were?

Zephyr's smile faded slightly. 'It's... literally because of my dad.' He sadly replied. 'I'm of his blood, and blood carries power. We believe that strongly in the witch community. Blood connects us all... even the blood of traitors. Many witches work hard to separate themselves from their warlock forebears, but... others like me? The parents were so despicable that surely the children must carry their evil too.' He ran a hand through his hair. 'You've no idea how many times I've stood in front of a mirror and wondered when it is I'll snap, and end up like him.' He softly finished, voice trailing almost into a whisper.

"Blood carries power," Nicholai echoed thoughtfully, then said "But, it means very little when sat beside one's own soul." Sure, Zephyr had an evil warlock for a father, but it didn't mean too much unless he chose to actually function like him. "My mother would always tell me something simple when I asked about anything. If it was meant to be, it shall be. Until then, it shall not." Smiling slightly, he added "I'm human, and plan to stay one, so I'll never really understand how a witch functions or how their breeding works, but I highly doubt you'll end up like your father." It just... didn't seem likely. And if Zephyr did somehow turn out like his father, then... well, that could be saved for later, Nicholai's brows furrowing, and lips forming a frown.

'Anyone can be a witch.' Zephyr softly laughed. 'I bet they didn't teach you that in Lyria. For some it comes with an awakening of powers they never knew they had... and it can be something so simple.' Zephyr leaned back in his chair. 'Perhaps your plants grow more quickly than others, or animals gravitate towards you- maybe you want it to rain, and then it does- or you're happy, and your single emotion influences an entire room. Then you discover the craft, and... vûala! New witch.' His eyes saddened. 'The worst part is they dont teach you that. Many witches are witches simple because the choose to be. I knew a girl barely eighteen years of age... she used all the social media... saw some stuff on the craft, got into Wicca. I don't like Wicca- I'm Pagan, but- it comes hand in hand. She was just a normal person, and then she started studying, and... new witch.' He ran a hand through his hair. 'She was struck by a crossbow bolt two weeks later. Me and Edana moved town.'

"I'm aware anyone can be a witch," Nicholai said simply "I said in sense that I intend to stay human, and not become one." Whether he spared them or not, he despised the idea of calling himself a witch. "It's necessary to know because Witchers like to kill witches born into the craft if you may. People who just learn magic are worth less bounty. Same with werewolves, vampires and so on." "Some killers put no age on a target," was all he could say in response to Zephyr's story "Hopefully she didn't suffer for long."

'You should meet the two witchers that live round here sometime.' Zephyr said, smiling. 'I'm surprised they haven't approached you yet, actually... and especially Ash. She likes to know who's in her neighbourhood- doesn't tend to let other witchers roam. Unless she's already seen you and doesn't mind you being here... she might be busy.' Deep in thought, he jumped when their food arrived and grinned sheepishly at the waiter, before quietly picking at the potato skins and sighing happily at their taste.

"Whether she wants me "roaming" or not," Nicholai said simply "There's very little she can do about it." He'd been around for a while, so perhaps he'd been "accepted" or whatever. Looking as their food came, he examined his almost curiously. He eventually started to pick at the hollowed out halves, quiet for a moment before asking "How many witchers, that you know of, are in the area anyway?" Some worked in the same cities, but it was a little uncommon. Less game for everyone.

'Just the two. Ash and Night. They protect this city- anyone within it are theirs to defend. They're nicknamed the shepherds.' He softly replied. 'Ash has saved my ass a few times, and she's the witcher I told you about- the one who got rid of that were pack? They're a kind of police I guess. Witches get warnings- if they're banished from their covens, then ash or night will seek them out and kill them. This city is... usually peaceful. I... I hope they're okay.' It would be a matter of extreme concern if the two main peacekeepers of the city were missing, and Zephyr really hoped that wasn't the case.

Nicholai mentally groaned. If they were missing, then he'd have to looking for them, a sort of habit learned from going to Lyria. If you knew a Witcher went missing, and they hadn't been branded outsiders, then you had to go retrieve them, or try anyways whether you wanted to or not. Less Witchers meant less dead witches. "Have you not heard from them in a while or something?" he asked Zephyr. "Maybe they just have something going on." With Witchers though, it was highly unlikely. Ones who purposefully made themselves known to the witching world, and weren't a big group, they eventually ran into trouble at some point.

'I haven't seen ash for weeks, she normally drops by to give me a faerie or some new magical herbs. Night stops by the town once a week- he doesn't meet anyone, just patrols for a while then leaves. I haven't seen either of them.' He softly said, trailing off. 'Maybe I should go look for them tomorrow... just in case. I know where they live, so...'

Nicholai pinched the bridge of his nose for a moment. "If you decide you want to go looking for them," he spoke slowly "I'll... go with you. And Alder would be there too." Even if it was just to search their home. If something got ahold of seasoned warriors, they'd step all over someone like Zephyr, who wasn't properly able to defend themselves yet.

'Are you sure?' He softly asked, tilting his head. 'I'm sure you must be getting sick of me by now.' His lips twitched, and he began to eat his soup, glancing around every so often. Although the man held an outwardly gentle appearance, when one looked closer they'd see he was always, always alert- as though ready to run or fight at any moment. His shoulders a little too tense, his body very vaguely twisted towards an exit point, and his eyes sharp and studious.

(I've been well enough. I recently got a Bichon to help with depression :3 What about you? How've you been?)
"If I were sick of you," Nicholai said "I would not have offered to see you again." Now, that didn't mean they were close, but Nicholai didn't dislike Zephyr. "I'll see about going to your place tomorrow, and we'll head over to wherever you say they live." It wouldn't hurt to go look for the other Witchers, because it was mostly likely a witch or something similar that took, or killed, them. As he thought it over, he noticed Zephyr's alertness, but didn't comment.

((Awhhh cute ^w^ And okay, I'll do a skip ^.^))
Zephyr paced quietly in the location he'd sent to Nicholai to meet; in front of the very deep woods. The night was dark- a new moon- the only thing lighting the way were stars. He ran a hand through his hair, hoping that Nicholai would show, finding that now he was here he was nervous about going in. He released a deep breath, then softly murmured an old saying his mother would preach; 'a witch ought never be afraid in the darkest forest, because they should be sure in their soul that the most terrifying thing in the forest is them.' He breathed out, calm, then glanced around as he impatiently waited, the wind ghosting through his hair.

Nicholai eventually showed up, armed with his favored pistols, and his Witcher's Sword strapped to his back in a sheath. It wasn't made of any special glowing rock, magical space rainbows or anything, just silver, but it did have a number of different blessings and markings upon the blade that made it quite dangerous to most known creatures. Alder was also there as promised, standing upright like a bipedal with what looked to be a gun of his own. Approaching Zephyr, Nicholai stopped beside him and stared out into the forest, as far as he could see into the dark trees. He didn't say anything, only looking over at Zephyr with a questioning expression, as if to ask if he were ready to proceed.

Zephyr softly smiled at him. 'I assume you know better than to interact or look at the fairfolk?' He softly asked, making his way into the forest. He pulled a dark green cloak out of his bag as he went, wrapping it around his body and tugging the hood up, slowly starting to relax as the breeze guided him down the wild forest paths. 'Ash doesn't like to make things simple... this place is essentially a maze. Stay close; the forest itself changes accordingly. The closer we get, the more difficult and confusing our proceedings.'
