Plot The world is now in shambles thanks to mankind's need for victory in war. Basically, someone found a way to create new beasts so no one would have to die in war. Some created bears with armored plating. Others created lions three times larger than they were originally. These beasts quickly became wild and uncontrollable. Most of humanity died. Governments fell and such. Some secluded groups still lived and are in 'settlements'. Some travel alone. Our character are going to be a couple of friends traveling around. Though I would be fine with them starting out in a settlement. Now, they find an old lab and inside they find dragon eggs. They can know what they are or they can't. Either way, they take them. (This is how far I've gotten. I wanted to see what people wanted to do. )
Characters Kest Maeve Kest is a bit smaller in all aspects when compared to an average male. This is actually quite common along the settlements. A protection does mean more mouths to feed and food having to be spread around. He has his light brown hair cut short and he has blue eyes. Many tiny scars speckling his limbs. Kest is a scholar. He always had a curious nature. He loves learning and exploring the old ruins spotting his settlement's land. He is a bit reckless, being an optimistic when it comes to things. He can easily get wrapped up and can overcomplicate things. However, isn't much of a fighter. He can, but prefers not to. Most causes he just can see himself fighting for. Though once he does find something worth fighting for, he'll stand up for it until the end. He will freely lash out with words rather than a blade. He dislikes fish, the ocean, and the heat. He lives in a good-sized settlement in the Northern fields. He doesn't have a large role and is normally out collecting whatever he can. I might make a couple more characters depending on what happens.

yo Asher Bates is an average man of an average build. He has sandy, dirty blonde hair that had once been contained to the top of his head but now hung around his neck in waves. He has hazel eyes and dark brows. He's more reasonable than most, and while he'll often do dangerous things, they're calculated risks and not off the cuff (like Riku would be apt to do). He's frightened of heights, snakes and crowds. He's good with a knife and a rifle, but his aim with anything minus a scope can be patchy. Even after the end of the world he has a strong moral compass, enough so that it sometimes gets in the way of doing things the more practical or safer way. After Riku's disappearance and the second raid on his group that left most of them scattered or dead, Asher began moving away from the broken city he once called home, looking for another place he could be safe. Asher and Riku samples. more for reference, but feel free to take a peek through them, as this was a similar world as a jump in and it could probably be backstory for him. And the last part is a bit jumpy because it was a rp and the other two pov's are not included. Asher knew it was only a matter of time before he died. So what harm was it to live what life he had on the edge? That's what he tried to tell himself, at least, as he sat --trying not to shake-- at the top of a crumbled building, literally hanging his feet over the edge. He looked to the horizon, not to the ground four stories below his feet, and though he wanted to recreate what the city had looked like before the Wars, the reality of things made it impossible to recall the shining glass and sleek metal of the past. He knew Riku would be calling for him soon, knew being up here doing nothing was only wasting time he should be using in more productive ways. Or as Riku would probably say--
"You're not helping."
"Just thinking of you, Riku," Asher said, cautiously pulling his legs back onto solid, or, well, mostly solid, ground. "How'd you find me up here?"
Riku shrugged, flicked his dark hair out of his face. Stupid, he refused to have it cut, so it always hung over his eyes, getting in the way. Asher wondered how he wasn't already annoyed to death of it, but knew asking wouldn't give him an answer so he didn't bother.
"Nice vantage," Riku stated, ignoring Asher's question. "Hey, look at that." Asher made his way to his friend's side, hesitating as he approached the precipice again. Riku pointed and Asher followed his finger to the road beyond, spying two people out in the middle of the street. They appeared to be talking. "Wonder if they have anything worthwhile."
"Leave them be, we have enough."
"Enough for now," Riku muttered, but sheathed the knife that had flashed into his hand, making it disappear just as quickly as it had appeared, almost as if it didn't exist. "We should still check them out. They are in our territory, after all. Wonder if they're some of those Black Dragon scum."
It was Asher's turn to shrug, but he followed as Riku turned away from the edge and back to the stairwell, taking the flight two steps at a time. Asher followed at a more reasonable pace, knowing Riku, impulsive idiot as he was, would still have the sense to wait for him before confronting two strangers alone.
Asher noticed the glint of steel first and pointed it out to Riku. "Think we've been found out," he whispered to air, jumping up in dismay, too late to have stopped Riku from heading forward with a shout and a wave. "Sorry," Asher called out belatedly, his voice almost lost under Riku's.
"You guys know this is right in the middle of Rising Sun territory right? Not very smart to be around here at all, let alone in the middle of the street. If we saw you, who else could?" Asher caught up with Riku, who hadn't made it to the other two, but crossed at least half the distance between the strangers and their cover. He grabbed Riku by the shoulder, slipping Riku's knife out of his back pocket. Just in case.
Asher noticed Riku tapping where his knife should have been, glad he had removed it. "We're not with them."
"Not anymore," Riku added with a flash of a grin.
Asher sighed and put the knife away, stepping out from behind Riku and making an helpless gesture. "We're wandering, staking out new territories. Our base just was raided by some Black Dragons and we're scouting out for the others." He gave Riku a sidelong glance, rolled his eyes. "And of course I got paired up with him."
"You mean blessed by my presence."
"Whatever."
Riku watched the two as they left, held back from following by Asher's restraining hand. "They're right, leave them be. They don't look dangerous anyways." Asher held forth the knife in compromise and Riku took it none too gently, shoving the point back in his belt.
"But that way. Are you sure--"
"They'll live. Now come on we have to report back before dark." Asher turned and started westwards, back to where they had left the rest of their group while they scouted. He felt Riku lingering behind, knew he was debating whether or not to follow. To be honest, Asher didn't mind. A guy as annoying as Riku wasn't going to die that easily, and after the raid. . . well Asher didn't really care if he was caught. Probably had better food, he thought with a chuckle.
"Asher?" He slowed his steps, enough for Riku to catch up in a brisk walk. "You think that old building is a good enough outpost?"

Ahh, I'm sorry. I'll be a bit longer on my forms since I had more going on today than I thought. Do you want to rp more than one character or are you just going to rp Asher? Don't apologize, there's nothing wrong with a bit of wait for quality. And I'm the first one to understand things going on in life. I don't mind, I was thinking they could maybe bump into Riku later since he just 'disappears'. Perhaps plot? idek I left that string if we want to take it someplace.

Kest plucked another few of blackberries from the spiny bush and popped one in his mouth. He cracked a small smile at the sweet burst of juice. He almost considered eating all of the berries in his hand. He shook his head. No need to get into more trouble than he needed. The rest of the fruit went into his rough bag. When he noticed the lack of mumbling, he scanned the area. He couldn't see anyone familiar. He grinned and knotted his bag shut. He sprinted toward the new set of ruins.
This was his usual routine. He would start collecting what the settlement considered useful and then split to collect 'junk'. many considered it selfish, but Kest didn't see it that way. What he found was valuable and would help his settlement, one day. He had faith one day he would find something amazing. Something to help his settlement grow and stop the raiders. Not many raiders came this far enough, but the ones who did had immense war parties. They would demand weapons and his settlement had to give it to them. It was beyond frustrating.
This time he had a special place he wanted to visit. Granted, it didn't look like much. By now, nature had reclaimed the building. Vines climbed the walls, weeds poked through the cracks, and creatures scurried away as he walked in. The windows were cracked or missing as well. This did work in his favor. The black whatever was crawling up the walls. Fresh air would help with whatever that was. He had once gotten horribly sick after spending an entire day in a room with the black splotches. He shifted his scarf so it covered his mouth. This place was barely different from the other ruins, yet he knew it was special. The text he had found said as much.
At the thought, he slipped his hand into the bag and brought out a brown page. Few of the sentences were actually legible. What he could make out was about a get new thing they had made. The author sounded hesitant when he wrote. It was usually something Kest wouldn't risk. Yet, a raid was coming. He couldn't ignore this for the sake of his settlement. He moved with purpose as he tried to find the stairs.

Asher hadn't eaten more than corn pate and dandelion leaves for the last two days and his stomach wasn't going to let him forget it any time soon. He was, in the fullest extent of the phrase, in the middle of freaking nowhere. Oh, sure, it had once been somewhere, as everything had once been somewhere before it suddenly became what is now nowhere. Confusing, maybe, but it was a simple fact in the world he lived in: everywhere was ruins, and so was nothing at all. Ghosts of what once was, but is no longer. If there weren't people, it was nothing. And so he stood, where once people had stood, someplace yet nowhere all at once.
A few patches of ground showed only a scattering of grass and creeper vines, slabs of broken concrete half buried into the ground. A few buildings stood around, their jagged walls like broken bones where the outsides had decomposed and been reclaimed by trees and vines and life. A few plants were edible: spearmint near a marshy pond, more dandelion (the taste was something he had grown to almost enjoy), a few blackberry bushes that had a few ripe berries ready for the picking. He collected what he could as he roamed northwards, ever northwards and away from the damned 'free cities' that had once been his only home but now turned him away. He was like a sparrow kicked from the nest, threatened by the mockingbirds that were too lazy to build their own but too powerful to refuse.
Asher decided to pause under a tree. He swung his pack off his shoulders and placed it between his legs as he sat, resting his back on the firm bole of the tree. The shade was cool and a welcome relief to his wandering. He had been keeping what he collected in a white --rather off-white now-- ragged cloth tied into a sack. He clamped it shut, grabbed a water bottle from the side of his bag and dropped a few precious drips onto the rag to keep it damp and cool so the leaves wouldn't dry all too quickly and the berries would stay fresh. The food went securely to the bottom of the bag while Asher allowed himself a few small sips of the water himself. He only had two bottles, and they would only be replenished once he made a fire to boil more that night.
He sighed and allowed himself to rest a while as he clamped his bag. It was pretty here, he would admit. And there were plenty of trees and plants for scavenging. He hadn't seen people in quite some time. Safe, but lonely. It was then that he saw movement against the still landscape. It was far and Asher's eyesight admittedly wasn't the best, but he could tell it was human. He squinted as the figure came closer. Yeah, definitely a person.
Asher sat beneath the tree, motionless. It had been weeks since he left the free city and two days since he had seen another person. He hadn't heard of any raiding parties or gangs to the north, but he was still wary. The person was doing little to conceal their movements. Either they were confident they would win a fight or confident no one was around to see them. Either way, it wasn't until the figure disappeared into a nearby building that Asher's curiosity won over his fear. He swung his pack over his shoulders and stood, instinctively checking that the knife at his belt was still there.
No sense in waiting around, he thought and started towards the building the figure had entered. With luck, perhaps they would be able to trade for food or supplies. Asher still had a few batteries from the city in the bottom of his bag. Hopefully he'd be able to barter some meat for them. His stomach definitely agreed with him on that front, at least.

Kest shifted through the files he had uncovered on the desk. Most were useless tidbits. Sending a paper to so-and-so didn't help at all. He doubted he could get coffee for Cindy anymore. He let these papers flutter to the ground. The rest were long winded papers covered in perfectly printed yet fading words. He squinted and held up the paper as he tried to use the sunlight streaming in to read. He wished he could study the papers extensively in proper lighting. He would love to take each one and read them next to a bright fire and around fresh air. However, he didn't want his friends or the people at the settlement to see the papers. They would know he had been going to the ruins again. He would be scolded and the papers burned. He might be banned from going out. A sigh escaped when he thought of the possibility. Then, he realized he could hear something strange. His head swung up to stare at the entrance of the room.
Kest was use to the screeching and scurrying of rodents and other creatures he disturbed. He could identity most animals by sound now. This did include the human. He heard what sounded like a foot stepping down on the hard floor. He froze. Best case was this was one of the people from the settlement here to drag him back. Worst case, this was a ghost here to claim his soul. The male tried not to shiver. Raya's stories were getting to him now. Just as the stars show themselves, the women would tell tales of the ghosts who wandered the ruins. Sometimes these spirits were friendly souls who helped the lost child find their way back. However, a lot of the time, they weren't. Ghosts would lead the child in circles or steal their soul. Those were the least frightening examples. Often, Kest dismissed the tales as what they were, false stores meant to chase little ones back to bed. They couldn't have children running around the ruins. Someone could get hurt. Kest knew the risk he was taking. Though, these risks did not normally include meeting a human. He did not want to believe in ghosts and really didn't want to meet a human right now. So, he told himself it was a figment of his imagination.
He went back to his papers when he heard the sound again. It sent his blood racing. There was no place for doubt. Someone, or something, was approaching. Kest did not want to stick around to see if they, or it, was friendly. He shoved the rest of the papers into his pouch and quickly tied it shut. With as much stealth as he could muster, Kest slunk to the entry of the room. He poked his head out. The dim hallway didn't seem to hold a soul. The intruder must be in another room, he told himself. He slipped out the room and headed for the stairs. At first, he tried to maintain his stealth. If he made it to the top, he might be able to wait out whoever this was. Not many people liked hanging out in the heavy air or dim halls. The footfalls started to get louder. All common sense flew out of the male as he raced up the steps, taking two at a time. He stumbled only to regain his footing a second later. He ungracefully ran up the final few steps and flailed into the top room.
With a slam, the door closed. He sat down, back against the door. His breath came out in little huffs. For a second, he just sat. He sat and breathed. His pack was clutched to his chest, like a frightened child might clutch their favorite toy at the sound of thunder. If the other person didn't know he was here, they did now. He groaned in frustration and rubbed his face. This could not be any worse. He had no choice. He had to wait.

(Wait just a bit confused. Was Kest upstairs or downstairs when Asher came in and where is he now in relation to the door?) Sorry. I was pretty tired when I typed this out. I changed it so Kest is on the first floor in a room. I already had him in the building in my other post, so I figured it would be a good spot. He hears Asher walk into the building. He goes out of the room and up the stairs. The footsteps getting louder can just be Kest. )

The ruin wasn't as Asher would have imagined. The door had long since been lost to time, leaving a crumbled entrance cloaked with leaves of a nearby bush. It appeared more like the entrance to a cave than to a building, but the bones of the building could clearly be seen: gray cement and red brick made a patchwork of the surrounding forest. He brushed the branches aside and forced his shoulders through, his progress jerking as his legs and then his bag snagged on the bush.
The air was dank and still and he couldn't help but cough as a foul taste coated his tongue thick and murky as slime. Black mold crept darker than shadows and he quickly covered his mouth with the top of his shirt. He had seen enough of the stuff in the sewers of the free cities to know that the black mold only followed in the wake of death and decay. Minimal light filtered through holes in the wall, tinted green from the layers of leaves it passed through. The entrance was small but two hallways branched off from the room. There was no logical way to tell which one the figure had went down, or if he had managed to slink out one of the many holes in the top of the wall, though Asher couldn't find a reason for him to be doing that as the ruin could be more easily avoided altogether.
He paused, almost ready to give up and move on. He didn't even know who this person was, if they had anything to trade or if they wouldn't stab him so quick as see him. And the dead air was starting to catch in his lungs, making it hard to breathe. He shrugged and took a few steps farther into the complex, peeking around the corner and into the hall. It was then that he heard a smattering of footsteps on the other side, clanking as if in panic. "Hello?" Asher called, backtracking to the main room with the mold on the side, trying to stay as close to the center as possible. "I'm just looking for food. I have things to trade."

Kest held his breath when a man's voice echoed off the walls. He didn't sound threatening and was promising trade. Kest was tempted by the offer. Trading was one of his favorite things. The bargaining wasn't the best as he quickly grew frustrated, but he loved to see the little treasures the travelers brought. The best part was most thought what they carried was junk. A man who wasn't afraid of the ruins might have a lot he picked up. Kest sighed and stood up. He could go half-way down the stairs. If he saw more than one man or a man holding a weapon, he would be able to outrun them back to the room. He was fast and use to the stairs many others weren't. With this plan in mind, he opened the door slowly.
His steps made a soft patting noise as he slowly made his way down stairs. He had covered his mouth with the scarf again and one hand was on his bag. He wasn't sure what he was going to offer the man. He didn't have much with him besides berries and they did nothing to fill a man's stomach. He was a little glad about this. More people would kill a man for his riches than a man with nothing. Taking the stranger back to the settlement would be the wisest course, he decided. They would no longer be alone and Kest would have more to offer him. Abandoning the ruins without a reward was a little disheartening to the man. After all the effort to avoid detection and to sneak in, nothing. Hopefully, the stranger would have goods to make up for this.
Thinking of the stranger, Kest peered into the gloom to see a single man standing in the middle of the room. The dim lighting didn't show much of the male's features, but Kest didn't see the gleam of any weapon. A cautious man to stand in the middle of the room. Kest wondered if he was use to being attacked or use to attacking. he didn't look like the raiders who usually pass by. After one more glance up and down the stranger's body, Kest decided he could be trusted, for now. "If you want to trade, we will have to return to my settlement. I have nothing for you here." He called.

Asher heard footsteps again, unmistakable. The figure was shorter than he would have guessed, even peering from the staircase their head hardly reached Asher's height. A scarf was wrapped around the bottom half of their face and Asher only knew he was male when he spoke. "If you want to trade, we will have to return to my settlement. I have nothing for you here."
A settlement? He was surprised; he knew there weren't raiding towns this far north because that was important to know in the free cities, where understanding raiders and getting on their good sides was a way of life. Settlements. Peaceful settlements in this world, who would have thought? Yet a few still survived on the edges of life at the city, either too poor, too prickly, too far, or otherwise not worth the effort of raiders. He had known a few of them when he was a ranger in the free cities, but he hadn't heard of this one in the north. Not really surprising: they were ignored if they stayed away from the free cities, and this was far too distant to be known by any free city gang.
A fleeting thought passed his mind: that this young man was not who he said he was. Lying came easily to him and even easier to Riku, as they say, everyone in the city is either a good liar or already dead. But the thought was only fleeting, for what did he have to fear from a man who claimed he was from a settlement? But another thought hit him that didn't match with what he knew about settlement dwellers: "Why are you all the way out here, alone, if your're from a settlement? You probably have no fighting skill, and I've seen no signs of a settlement nearby."
(sorry absolute garbage rip have a lot of papers to write and creative isn't easy after that)

Kest waited for a rely while one of his hands picked at a loose thread. He had really thought this would be a quick answer. If the person truly did want to trade, he would have to go to the settlement. The settler had to remind himself that travelers had to be cautious. They always had to second guess everyone since they were only out for their own good. It was the worst way to live in Kest's opinion. It sounded tiring and depressing.
Kest stiffened. He was a bit offended by the fighting comment. A small huff left the man. Sure, he wasn't good at fighting, but there were people in his settlement which were actually pretty good. He had seen them take down a mammoth cat before. Still, he knew he couldn't get mad at the male. Right now, the male was blocking the only real exit. The holes in the wall would do if he didn't mind the cuts and bruises which came with them. Kest did not want to replay last week's escape. So, he tried to shove this feelings down.
"Both the beasts and humans avoid the ruins, so I don't really need to worry about fighting." He said, crossing his arms. Okay, maybe he wasn't going to get over the fighting comment just yet. "The settlement is deeper in the mountains. They block the signs of our settlement."" he explained, gesturing toward the mountains. To him, it was logical. They mined and forged. The fires from the forge never reached high enough to be seen over the mountains. He hoped the stranger didn't notice his avoidance on the topic of why he was here. He didn't want anyone stealing what Kest needed.

( It's probably the more logical route, though Asher'd be equally likely to push the "Humans and creatures avoid ruins" to insist on why Kest doesn't follow that rule but he's also very curious about settlements and would love to see this one xD
