Multiple characters are always good. I say if we each start out with at least two characters, we can make more as we go.
As for the pairing, did you want there to be a romance or just close friends? If we add a romance, I'm more comfortable with MxF. However, if you want to have our main two characters be partners/friends/or enemies, I'm all up for that as well.

(That works for me. ^^ So should then be working for a guild of assassins? Or should they just be two working on their own, hiring themselves out to those who need them?)

(Okay. Should my character be a guy or girl? Either way, mine will be a part of guild. He/she might have meet your guy and first tried to recruit him, and after maybe a shared mission, they become friends. I don't know, just throwing out ideas. XD )

(Okay then. Now I'm torn between wanting to have a guy and making them best friends, and wanting to have a girl so there's a possible romance between them. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm........... I'm a make a girl, mainly for the fact that I need more practice in creating and developing good female characters. Sound good to you?)
