I'm even more extreme; got an extra R. That way, you know I mean business.
My point is, I'm writing a fantasy, and I'm killing off characters left and right. This last guy in particular.
I mainly made this thread for the joke, but I do kinda need help convincing myself not to kill a main character in my story. Like, it's gonna create CONSEQUENCES for the characters when they eff up, but at the same time I'M KILLING OFF THE LIKABLE PEOPLE.
See, we establish a few things at the start of the story;
1) Magicals are bad, and all people with magical blood deserve to die. 2) All orphaned children, five years and up, are sent off to fight in the war against the magicals. 3) The knights seem to be the main enemy, and are the ones hunting down kids to force them to fight magicals.
Our main character is an orphaned 12 year old girl who gets rescued by a stranger when she's fleeing the knights. He doesn't talk, and hates contact, but they manage to work together to try and take her home. Long story short, they get separated, she has to get the help of other people to find him again, and get her back to her brother.
Only, when she and her new friends arrive, it turns out this dude was an elf (magical) and he's just hanging in the town square. End the story right there.
...Too much?

I'm the same way. I like killing off my characters, but that's how I show my love. XD
This one time I half jokingly mentioned to my friend how so was going to kill off alot of characters, to which she replied that if I killed off too many characters, the audience wouldn't be invested in the story anymore.
*looks at GRRM and any other successful work that has invoked the Anyone Can Die trope*

Is it just me, or do the best fantasy writers have two Rs in their name?
I kill off a lot of characters because I think it's far more realistic. Like you thought your favourite character was going to survive being attacked by a bear? I don't think you know how bears work.
Or you thought the wanted criminals were gonna get away and have a happily ever after? Too bad. Moral of the story is that life sucks.

Not all heroes live to see another day, and not all of them win either. That, and it's fun to kill off my babies. 😈

I kill off lots of characters but then I start missing writing about them and I regret it. I just try to remember that character death gives a story suspense and emotional power, and it does give the story a more realistic feeling because irl luck just doesn't always hold out.
There is, however, such a thing as overdoing it, and in some ways GRR Martin is an example of it.

I don't kill off most of my characters, but I do send them to fates worse than death or into feeling that death would be better off for themselves.

The best example I can think of is two of my characters who are cursed to die over and over. They travel through time and space, live an entire life, only to die again and start over.

I'd list more, but most of my favourites don't really sound all that awful without context. -Had a pirate captain get shanked with a bread knife, then brought her back as waterlogged undead. -Aforementioned death curse thing for two characters. -Had a character gnaw her own arm off. -Had a guy who's mind is occasionally under control of an insane warlock who makes him burns down buildings. -Had characters sacrifice everything for family only for family to hate them for it/for it to work the opposite. (One fellow signs a contract with a witch to get his sister out of an abusive relationship, but the side effects of making the deal means everyone he knows remembers him as the murderer of his sister's "loving husband.") -Had a lady who cut her own eyes out. -Fellow who doesn't realize he's a ghost who hates that people ignore him. He tries to end his life several times but can't, since he doesn't realize he's already dead.
