i p much never post on this forum anymore except to engage in the occasional discourse which is rly all i'm here for but i feel like this is worth sharing so uh ur welcome in advance
so i walk out of class today and go to wait for my bf in the courtyard bc his is in the building next to mine and his lecture lasts 30min longer than mine so i'm waiting for him and i see this sign over yonder that says something abt "skeptics" and "bible" and so i'm like o yeah that's interesting i'll go over and see what's going on
so it's like this guy sitting on a chair w a bunch of these canvases put up w a bunch of fire and brimstone stuff written all over them abt how this country is going down the crapper bc we don't recite the lord's prayer in school every five minutes anymore or whatever and so he's out there yammering on w these kids and this prof all standing around and they're kinda bickering w him cuz he's talking some nonsense abt slavery or whatever and they're telling him off and i'm like yeah idk what's going on but i can vibe w this
and then this kid next to me goes "what do u think abt this" and i'm like yeah i'm cool w it but i'm not really religious so he says "oh ok what are you" and i tell him i'm agnostic, he asks if i believe in the afterlife and i'm like idk man and he says what do u think ur chances of getting into heaven are on a scale of 1 to 10 and i'm like uh probably 6
so he's talking to me abt jesus and stuff and i'm like yeah ok cuz he was cool and all, p chill, and then he says to me "well agnosticism is better than atheism at least bc if u don't believe in anything then how do u explain all this" and so i'm ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
and then the boy says to me "yeah cuz there's no way evolution could happen"
proceeds to explain to me that they've been searching for a common ancestor between apes and humans for years w no luck
did u guys know
ok mods can delete this or w/e bc i honestly haven't posted here often enough to know of any updates concerning "pls don't talk abt evolution" so that's fine, i literally have no intention of offending anyone i just wanted to share my culture shock experience it was v interesting ok thanks for tuning in

that sounds like an interesting situation
when people are like 'but they haven't found the common ancestor/transition species!' its so upsetting like... amazingly, the remains of living beings aren't always perfectly preserved, leaving gaps in the fossil record,,,,, crazy concept

It's funny because my bioethics class was talking about the concept of worship and god (no specific god) and how it can be "good" as opposed to worshipping something like wealth, power, or intellect which could be considered "bad" things to worship.
Philosophy is crazy stuff man

I remember at my college my friends and I were walking to class and this guy was handing out bibles. We all were like "nahhh its cool, please dont waste your bible on us." (we are all agnostic/athiest) and he was like YOU TAKE ThiS NOW BECAUSE ITS IMPORTANT. And he said some rude things.
Long story short we werent nice to the bibles.

anyways im simultaenously annoyed and awed by those sort of evangelicals because like. it takes a lot of guts and confidence to be able to just set yourself up like that for possible public ridicule and seek out conversation about something you believe in so deeply. like i struggle to do that. but at the same time some of those kids can be too aggressive about it which only succeeds in scaring people off and leaving bad impressions, y'know
also nothing makes me wince more than ppl with little-to-no philosophically theological education trying to debate complex topics like that. i mean i dont believe in macroevolution for lots of reasons but all of them valid scientific criticisms of the theory, not just brushing it off as "faked".
i mean if ur gonna be a debater, you gotta learn the first rule of debate: use evidence on the same field as the opposer. trying to argue spirituality as proof for someone who doesnt believe in it is like trying to convince a liberal that trump isn't the antichrist by sourcing breitbart

Interesting fact; I'm related to the guy who went to court so we don't have to read the bible in school anymore. Apparently.
I mean, cool.
Oh, and throwback to the time I accidentally stole a holy bible.
