( not on here, just in general)
They say stuff like " you have to have stuff that has rules, and only ONE unrealistic gimmick per world! Lal, suspension of disbelief can only work so far!!"
No.
A fantasy isn't supposed to be that, grounded to OUR reality
In whatever figmented fragment of a universe you can write, the world will work different
Take?? My story that I'll write one day ( or make JNTO a video game. Heck maybe both)
The world was born from a Titian, who existed one day, for cosmic reasons irellevant
One day the Titan disintegrated and its body parts kinda became slightly Eldritch creatures, and created the world and monsters, while the flesh reformed into human like beings which are the monsters of monster land
In said Land technology and magic aren't really explained, because it's like? Normal to everyone that motorbikes with 1000 pedals exist. Probably Jane from next door bought it. She has 500 pairs of legs and one eye. She's sweet
See??? Like this story's got interesting capabilities , and barely connects to reality logic wise
And there's nothing wrong with it and it needs to stop being shamed

I've been writing for years, and I have never heard of that "rule" before. I know writing has guidelines, but that seems a little odd.
I think I can kind of see where people like that are coming from though, since rules do have to be set for a world, otherwise things just get really ridiculous. Take Briarlight from Warriors for exampleโparalyzed from the waist down, yet she has cheated death seven times while cats older and younger than her get killed off.
You get what I mean? Even in fantasy stories, there has to be some sort of realism to it, even if the world is super strange.
However, I get what you're saying too. I can definitely see why that would be annoying, especially since writing is already hard enough for some people as it already is.

Whenever I look for tips for writing fantasy the " rule" shows up Some of the video games that got me into writing ( fanfics n stuff) were so off the wall inane that it's just , great And if you can weave a brilliant story tucked into the patches of mallarchy then you've got yourself somethin great I've been told the best part about my writing is the word usage and how I can paint a picture and how my writing goes from blunt to eloquent as need be

OOC Exactly, and frankly, so long as it makes sense in your world, you're good bro.
Like, I write a story about animal spies that usually walk on two legs, that wouldn't fly in this world, but it's not this world and at least for the animal kingdom in that world, it makes sense.
Or I have this whole other story that's a sort of sci-fi, dystopian, apocalyptic thing, and a lot of stuff goes there that just doesn't here.
I get what you mean.

Like, I have this one story idea about these dimension travelers, and it had a cyborg army and a different genre for each dimension, there's magic, laser guns, talking animals, prophecies, Aztec warriors, and literally anything else you can imagine. But I make it work.
So long as you make it work in your story, literally anything goes and no one has the right to tell you to pick.

It follows this monstorsity who is incophrenesibleto most humans He's the "villain " He's kinda a Druid and very weak for his world The main character died when he was13 and now lives in the body of a mass of vines And his elder brother is the so called hero who was " blessed" withthe power to see things the way they see themselves ( as in his mind has enhanced so he can understand the un non understandable ) I still haven't decided what I want the ending to be But one day I'll write it Let's just say nobody is right and everyone sucks

![](https://preview.ibb.co/cQkRSQ/IMG_7011.jpg) STUFF LIKETHIS MAKES ME WANT TO BREAK A PROTRACTOR like, stop Please This is why I don't look at writing "rules" too often anymore. In this case, a story can have sci-fi elements mixed in with fantasy (which is an actual genre) so long as it makes sense to the world.

There is one rule. and that is keep your canon straight. Nothing makes an audience call foul like someone claiming a bench is now a watermelon. what's that quote that goes something like... "If I am watching a play, and a character points to a cast iron bed and says, 'this is a piano,' I have no problem with that. I also have no problem if a character sits down and plays a sonata on this 'piano.' However, I expect that no one will lie down and take a nap on the piano."

I don't do writing so naturally i haven't heard of that but if you're making your own world. why should you have to follow what others want you to? If you're going for realism, to an extent that makes sense, but it shouldn't be forced on anyone making up a world that's unlike the one we live in. Honestly.

"you have to have stuff that has rules" is actually true to maintain consistency and to keep the suspension of disbelief. If you change the rules mid-story, that may leave readers frustrated and possibly questioning your universe.
the other part is false though
