Levy had been enjoying the loveliest dream in years. A dream of roaring bonfires piled high with tongues of flame lapping hungrily at open air. Of tiny silver bells jingling giddly against bare wrists and ankles. Of polished tambourines and jaunty tunes curling like steam in the frost-bitten air. A light tap to the shoulder shattered the dream to fragments. An old ache yawned in Levy’s gut, torn fresh and salted with memories of a long-dead life.
Seth’s instructions beaded up and rolled off her skin. She didn’t want to see Ari right now. Or anyone for that matter. She wanted to fall back asleep. She wanted to feel the weight of beads around her wrists and braids in her hair.
Instead, Levy brushed her desires aside and set off after Seth.
The deck was warm with the afternoon sun and growing warmer by the minute. Pushing up her glasses, the young woman rubbed her eyes and made her way almost-instinctively for Ari.
He looked bored in his tank, swimming in slow, pointless circles. And why wouldn’t he be bored? Levy would have been driven to insanity by now if she were in his position. No one to talk to, nothing to do except eat and swim. She’d spent the past few days convincing herself that he’d be happier once he was sold. Of course he’d be happier! If he were lucky he’d have someone to spoil in night and day, someone to lavish him with gifts and trinkets. Maybe he’d have a bigger tank with more places to explore.
But what kind of life would that be? All the while, Ari would know he was someone’s property, their pet, their amusement at times. His life wouldn’t be his own. It would belong to someone who would decide his worth on a regular basis.
Levy approached the tank━ not too close, never too close. The tailend of Kasper’s conversation prickled fiercely over her skin, raising goosebumps. Which she subsequently ignored.
“Good day, Aristaeus. How are you this fine day?” She kept the conversation light, casual, as she glimpsed Hawke hovering closeby. There wasn’t much they could easily discuss in broad daylight, surrounded by the crew. All the more interesting topics, Levy knew, were best saved for when prying ears couldn’t reach them.
Hawke, however, was too engrossed with Zyancie Island to spare Levy and the mershark a glance. “Full moon, you say?” That sounded promising. Anything related to the One Who Loves would surely reveal itself during a full moon right? That made sense.
The Captain drew closer━ or, as close as he could given that he was a foot taller than Kasper. He kept his voice low as he spoke, “Perhaps it’s better if we discuss this alone? There’s some other matters I’d like to run by you, so it’s for the best if we continue talking in private.”

i'm writing a lot of hawke, so i thought i'd get a little character form up for him~
Captain Miguel Hawke // 41 years // honeybadger Miguel Hawke is the kind of handsome that you find in statues of polish marble and delicately painted scenes. Cool sepia skin with copper undertones earned from days on end spent beneath a relentless sun. Years spent as a ruffian at sea have left their mark in the form of thin silvered scars crisscrossing his features and lines pinching the space around his eyes. Hawke spends hours in front his mirror, thinking himself as youthful as ever. Or hoping, rather. His hair is long and tousled and left free to its own devices. Burnished brown strewn with shades of warm russet and bronze, it has yet to withstand the test of time as flecks of gray pepper his temples. The stubble that shrouds his jaw is in a similar state of graying, though brown is still hinted there. Hawke is not a man of lean and wiry beauty, pirating has crafted him with muscle and substance. He's tall, standing at 6'3" and built head-to-toe of iron and salt.

Though Hawke's and Kasper's conversation seemed (mildly) interesting, he didn't care much for ghost islands. They were usually too much danger for little reward - he'd come across a couple in his time, and oftentimes, he'd heard more about merfolk dying by other merfolk. It wasn't a pretty thing. He'd heard of merpiranhas who were straight up cannibals to other merfolk, had heard of giant mersharks or merwhales guarding the outskirts of the island. From what little he knew, Zyancie Island wasn't quite like that, but there was something on its shores. Some rumours said that the island was a test of trust, but...well. Ari didn't care enough to check it out.
He hadn't thought that he'd grow attached to a human, but hell, Levy had been the first to give him food, talked to him about interesting things. She didn't treat him like a pet (as fun as Jasper's games were), and he liked talking to her. Maybe he was considering her a friend, or something. Of course, he never missed how she was one of the few who didn't come too close - but with results like Kasper's soaking, he supposed he saw reason behind it. It erased one of his pastimes (throwing water on people who got too close), but hey! That was life.
"I'm decent," he said slowly, squinting thoughtfully. "You know if I'm going to be stuck in here for much longer, though, my water's going to need to be changed? It's not like the ocean. It's trapped, dead water."
Honestly, Ari didn't know how to explain it - but the ocean had its way of purification through its own ecosystems. His tank did not have plants or coral, did not have much aside from him. He flicked his gaze away idly, listening to the gulls cawing overhead. They still didn't come too close, but they were getting closer, too curious by the strange thing in a tank to stay away. Domestic mer, he'd heard, didn't eat birds. Ferals did, when they were caught.
"Also, I'm pretty sure there's a degree of cruelty in sticking me in a tank of water with nothing to do but, you know, that's none of my business," his eyes twinkled mischievously, like he knew that Levy couldn't quite help that.
Kasper shifted a little uncomfortably, flicking a glance to Levy and the mershark, realising he didn't have an escape, and thus accepting his fate. He nodded slowly and lowered his gaze.
"Yes, Captain. Full moon. And yes, Captain," let him die in peace, please, "I think discussion in another place would be a good idea."
Ari watched with mild curiosity, but when Kasper didn't look at him again, he turned his focus away. He wasn't going to get anything from the man, but he could do other things. Like imagine what it would be like to bask comfortably. He missed the smooth rocks he could spend hours on, or the occasional piece of drifting wood from destroyed ship. Of course, the wood was less of a comfortable solution - it started rotting in the water after some time - but it was something. Here, he could only rest his arms on the glass of the tank to keep himself propped upwards, thus only getting half of the effect. A lot of mer like him enjoyed basking - obviously not the deep sea ones, but the ones who lived a little closer to the surface. Of course, basking came with the risk of being seen...but to Ari, mermaids were a natural part of the ocean, so he'd never truly worried about that. He should've been more worried, really.

“Good! We agree then!” Without waiting even a second longer, Hawke spun on his heel and strode back into his cabin. He glanced back over his shoulder for moment, but not to make sure that Kasper was following him. His gazed skimmed briskly over Levy and the mershark, sharp and piercing. Levy stood a few paces away from the tank, keeping her distance, a precaution that the rest of the crew had thrown to the wind. But it wasn’t the ghost that Hawke cared for this time, instead, his jewel-bright eyes lingered for a beat or two on the merman, Ari.
Something inside the Captain stirred and rustled at the sight of the mer before settling back into hibernation. Soon.
The man motioned Kasper into his private quarters before shutting the door with an audible click. With two strides, Hawke came to a stop at his polished oak desk and flipped the book sitting there to the first page: the story of the Twin Gods.
“I’ve got a couple of things I’d like to speak with you about, Kasper,” he said, running a slender finger over the smudged sentences crowding the page. “I’d like to start by informing you that you can stop watching Levy Hatchenson. I’ve decided not to sell the mermaid, we’ll need him.”
Hawke skimmed through the rest of the pages, but found nothing on merfolk of any kind. Figures, the Leesh dwelled in the far north, landlocked in snow and ice. Any mermaid that managed to make it that far was already dead of cold or starvation. Impatiently, he drummed his fingers against the desk’s surface, eyebrows knitting together as though focusing hard enough would yield the results he sought so fiercely.
“Secondly, I want you to have this━” The Captain turned, arm outstretched and clasped in his hand was the Leesh book he’d sacrificed hours of sleep to find. “I’m aware you have a penchant for mythology or something along those lines and this is no longer of use to me. In fact, I’ve found myself in possession of a whole library of mythology books that serve no purpose! So, you’re free to take those as well.” There was something else hiding beneath Hawke’s tone as he said it, something out of place, out of character.
But the Captain was already on to something else before the tidbit could be analyzed. “I suppose I should also tell you that I have every intention of going to Zyancie.”
------- Levy watched Ari carefully. He leaned against the glass looking━ seeming ━composed. He’d been docile in demeanor ever since they’d hauled him aboard and tossed him into a tank. It was… Unsettling. To Levy, at least. She could only imagine how happy Captain Hawke must be to have found a mershark that would bite his crew at every turn. Still…
“Ari, it’s a little off topic, but… Why don’t you fight us? We’re keeping you hostage, but every time someone gets near you they walk away unscathed.” Levy frowned, her features pinching together with some unspoken pain as she went on, “Why are you so friendly towards us?” Towards me.
If it her, she would have railed and clawed and fought. She was sure of it. If she were the one in the tank and Ari was the one on deck… Levy stopped herself. It was pointless to think about. Their positions weren’t swapped. Besides, Ari probably had a very good reason for being complacent.
The young woman raked a hand through her hair, fighting down the memories that clawed up her throat like a wave of bile. Her pulse quickened as she leveled her gaze on Ari. His dark hair was beginning to curl beneath the warm touch of sunlight. From where she stood, she could see the faint tracing of a scar on his lip and the webbing between his fingers. She didn’t dare move an inch closer. Not a centimeter or a millimeter. Rooted to the spot and forgetting Ari’s talk of new water and degrees of cruelty.
“Aren’t you━ Shouldn’t you be━ Why aren’t you scared?” Her gaze plummeted, dropping to her feet.

Deciding that he had very little say in the matter anyway, Kasper followed quickly and silently, glancing back at Ari and Levy briefly - though the mermaid seemed to have lost all interest in the Captain and himself. That seemed fair. He shook his head a little and entered the cabin silently, feeling rather out of place and uncomfortable. He'd talked to the Captain more than he needed to so far, and it was all because - what? He knew a little bit about mythology? That he liked reading? He wasn't sure, but he wasn't going to point out that it was weird.
"Alright," he blinked owlishly. Admittedly, he hadn't been paying too much attention to the mershark and Levy - but hey, whatever. He didn't have to even look at them when they were talking, now. The news of the mermaid staying, however, made his brows furrow a little. "With all due respect, Captain, why do we need the mershark?"
It seemed a weird thing to not sell the thing due to the sheer amount of money in it - but to need a mythical creature sounded...strange? He'd heard in some places (like this place) that they were lucky, but. Well. Was there any credibility to it? He didn't think so. He watched Hawke's movements cautiously, and then blinked at the book he was given. He took it, grateful to have more reading material - but the question, again, of why came to him. He didn't quite understand. It was even more confusing when Captain Hawke went on to talk about how he could take other mythology books, but...well. That was just odd. He didn't have time to dwell on it.
The news of actually going to Zyancie Island made him flick his gaze him from the book in his hands, made a frown appear on his face.
"It's a deathtrap," he said nervously, "Captain, it's local knowledge that nobody has survived a trip there because of the potential monster that stays there. We have...no idea how to do anything about it."
Perhaps the Captain was going mad? He wasn't quite sure, but it was starting to unnerve him.
♦ - ♦ - ♦ The change of topic made Ari angle his head to the side, and he watched Levy through half-narrowed eyes. He considered the question idly, fingers drumming against the skin of his other arm as he thought. There were, he supposed, many reasons why he hadn't attacked - he'd struggled at first, had probably hit a few people with his tail, but it wasn't enough to cause severe harm. Bruises, maybe, but not much more.
"If I act like an animal, then I'm just going to be treated like an animal," he said cautiously, frowning a little. It sounded stupid when he said it out loud - Levy was one of the only ones who didn't treat him like an animal. Kasper treated him like a naughty pup, which was close enough to a human, he supposed. "I could be awful. I could be manipulative and get you to tell me all of your secrets, I could even drown you--" he eyed the distance that Levy had put between the tank, "I can reach further than you think. But I'm not going to, and you're just going to have to take my word on that. It's not going to help me if I struggle or whatever. It's not going to get me home, and I don't have the strength to be that bad, anyway."
There was only so much nutrition fish could give him, and without the plants from the sea and more to help him, he was...fed, but not quite nourished enough. He'd already lost so much weight in the past few days, and he didn't like it. Felt weak and useless.
"I'm terrified," he admitted, resting his chin on his arms again and closing his eyes. "Like you wouldn't believe. I don't know what your Captain is going to do with me - I could be sold to a cruel human or get lucky and have a decent human, but I'd just be some form of entertainment. I could be killed, or I could be kept here. Either way, I'm not going to be free and I'm not going to be happy, so I might as well just accept it. There's nothing I can do, because when a mermaid is caught then the humans automatically have the upper hand. It might surprise you, but we can't survive on land. We'll dry out. I could try to escape - I know I can get out of this tank - but I can't manoeuvre. It's not even a matter of not being able to breathe; mer can breathe entirely out of water for a while, it's just a matter of not being in water."
Ari paused and swallowed.
"What I'm trying to say is that I have no motivation to try to fight back, because no matter what I do, I'm stuck and I'll either die or be stuck here for the rest of my life," he shrugged, "that's just how it is."

Ari’s explanation cut deep. The weight of his words twisted like a rusty knife in her chest. For a moment, she was thrown back in time and all she could see was red snow and black stars. Funny how one of the few things she remembered was the starless abyss yawning overhead. She didn’t believe those stories, but it felt as though the One Who Loves had closed his eyes on her. Even now she could still feel the tears frozen to her cheeks and the icy wind lashing like a whip against her skin.
Levy grasped at words of solace and comfort, but found them all insufficient, barely a balm to ease Ari’s pain. “I was eight when I lost my family. I was alone. I thought I was going to die, but I didn’t. I think maybe things will turn out for you like they did for me. Maybe you’ll be able to find some happiness wherever you end up or however you end up.” She turned over her hands, picking at the dirt gathered beneath her nails. She didn’t glance up at Ari. The words felt meager and imperfect, but she hoped the message reached him all the same. If a newly-orphaned eight-year-old can survive and eventually find her place in the world, then maybe he could do the same.
The sound of someone walking up the gangplank made Levy turn, confusion plain on her face. Her eyes widened as she realized who it was. Tsuyuga stepped easily onto the deck, as though she belonged there. Whether out of respect or bewilderment, her crewmates made way for the Appraiser as she cut a bee-line for Ari’s tank.
Levy followed suit, hurrying out of her path like she was a tornado. “Miss Tsuyuga,” the young woman hurriedly greeted, hoping she hadn’t somehow offended the Appraiser, “What are you doing here? Kasper was supposed to━”
Tsuyuga held up a hand, though her gaze was fixed firmly on Ari, “I’m well aware of the plans we made. I’m not here about the mershark, I’m here to see Hawke.”
“Cap’n?” Levy quirked an eyebrow. Even if the Appraiser unnerved her, the young woman was grateful for the distraction. It was becoming harder and harder to look Ari in the eye.
“Yes, your Captain. Where is he?” The witch was right up against Ari’s tank, mere inches from the mershark. For all her talk, she didn’t appear to have the slightest interest in Captain Hawke’s whereabouts. Her attention was focused almost entirely on Ari.
“Um… He’s speaking with Kasper in his cabi━”
She didn’t have a chance to finish that thought before Tsuyuga whirled around, heaving an exasperated groan. “That boy! I should have drowned him when I had the chance.”
“Kasper?”
“Miguel, you idiot! He’s nothing but trouble. And now he’s off getting himself tangled up with the cook!” Levy flushed bright as a ruby. She sank her teeth her bottom lip, looking for bits of dirt she might have missed beneath her nails. Tsuyuga didn’t mean that, did she? Captain and… Kasper?
No. Obviously not. She’d put Levy herself in this very same spot last time. Was making up imaginary affairs a habit of hers?
As the young woman fought to compose herself, the Appraiser went on. “I’m here for a different reason, but if my instinct is correct you━” Levy glanced up to realize that Tsuyuga was speaking directly to Ari now “━won’t have to worry about being sold to anyone. Mind you, it’s not because I wasn’t able to find buyers. It’s because this particular pirate captain has a deathwish like you wouldn’t believe.”
Levy stiffened, earlier embarrassment evaporating under the Appraiser’s news. “Wait, what do you mean? Cap’n Hawke’s not going to sell Ari?” The question was tentative, fearful that further probing might make the bright spot of hope gutter and vanish.
“Not if he’s heard about Zyancie Island, he won’t.”
Zyancie Island? She briefly remembered Kasper mention such a place before leaving with Hawke to discuss the matter in private. If that’s really what they were discussing…
She batted the thought away. Just as she regained control of her thoughts, Tsuyuga was striding across the deck. Without turning over her shoulder she called out, “You’re welcome to meet us below deck with the mershark.”
-------
Hawke combed a hand through his hair and blinked, staring at Kasper as though he were dimwitted. “Why? Isn’t it obvious? Everyone knows mermaids are lucky. Keeping him with us will make us lucky.” True, the mershark had yet to prove these superstitions to be true or even remotely credible. But Hawke was willing to take that chance. Besides, Yuga not gutting him on the spot was proof enough for him. Did it count if the mershark wasn’t anywhere near the encounter? Maybe the luck rubbed off on him?
“Deathtrap? Pfft! You don’t really believe that, do you, Kasper? That’s just something locals say to keep pirates like us away so they can have all the treasure for themselves.” Hawke knew that wasn’t true in the slightest. But he hoped it would calm Kasper’s nerves just a touch. Obviously if anyone had survived the trip to the ghost island, no one would be talking about the ghost island. They’d be talking about the treasure the survivor had uncovered.
Before Hawke could delve further into the subject, a knock thudded against his door.
The man’s back straightened, his shoulders squared and eyes narrowed. Few of his crew were fool enough to disturb their Captain when he was busy. Breathing a calming breath, he opened the door with a stern, “What do you want?”
Every inch of him stiffened as his gaze dropped, landing on that all-too-familiar head of green hair. “Yuga? I thought we━”
“I’m not disturbing anything, am I?” There was a touch of salt and steel to her voice. Hawke just barely managed to suppress a chill that threatened to clamber up his spine.
“As a matter of fact, no.” A tendon in his jaw jump as he said it. “Now, what is it you want?”
“I’m just here to clarify a few things, Miguel Hawke. You’re not selling the mer anymore, are you?”
Hawke schooled his features into careful apathy, “You might as well come in,” he stepped aside, making room for Yuga. However, the little witch made no move to enter his cabin. “Would you mind if we discussed this below deck? I’d prefer if we let the mershark in on your plans as much as possible. It's only fair.”
The man swallowed, but remained composed, jewel eyes flicking briefly to Kasper standing baffled with his book. Ugh. He had so much explaining to do. Yuga was only making matters worse. “Fine, have it your way, you rotten witch. Kasper you’re free to go━”
“Actually, Hawke, I’d like to have a word with the cook. You go on ahead.” She skirted around him, making herself at home in his private quarters. It was aggravating. That vile woman grated on his nerves incessantly. She was sandpaper on glass.
But she always got her way.
“Don’t take too long,” Hawke had to keep himself from spitting the words at her. He forgot what a pain she could be. He forced himself to close the door slowly and quietly, though every bit of him wanted to slam it in her face so splinters flew into her eyes.
Alone now, Tsuyuga wasted no time. “It seems Hawke has taken a liking to you. I’d like to apologize on his behalf for that.”

It was strange to have things in common with a human; where Levy had been eight when she'd lost her family, Ari had been eighteen. He'd been old enough to understand the world, had figured out how to survive on his own solely because he had already learned enough about the ocean. To know that this woman had just been a child - especially by mer standards - was something fascinating to him, but he didn't push the topic. In fact, he couldn't - the appearance of the girl from before made him lift his head a little, and his body tense. He listened to the humans converse with little interest, watched the unfolding drama - because that, he figured, was what it was.
Tsuyuga, right. That was her name - though he hadn't been paying enough attention the days before to figure out what names were placed to who. He tilted his head to the side as he watched the Appraiser, considered reaching out to soak her or mess with her, but decided against it. She had an aura of power around her, and he didn't mess with powerful beings. Not if they could look as innocent as Tsuyuga and yet be so intelligent.
"I believe it," he said coolly, now resting his cheek in the palm of his hand.
There was an old mer saying - though Ari didn't know it by heart. His grandfather, after all, had been gone before he could continue the sayings. Old mer was difficult to learn, far more complex than the whistles and clicks they often resorted to. The saying, itself, talked about how those with the power to explore rarely used it for good - and he supposed that Captain Hawke was an example of that. Though he didn't know how the saying ended, he could imagine that it ended in death or something about heroes turning into villains. There had been plenty of that - mer were very cautious with morals. He supposed it made him odd to not care about them, but hey. That wasn't the point.
He wasn't being sold, and he didn't know if that was good or not. Somehow, he doubted it was going to be as good as it sounded. He flicked his gaze to Levy once the Appraiser had left.
"Kasper was talking to me about Zyancie Island earlier," there was an air of caution about his words, like he was trying not to rat someone out for doing something dangerous. Hell, he didn't know if the Zyancie myths were true, but he'd egged Kasper on a little too much. "He's probably told your Captain about it," it was stupid, but humans tended to be like that. He had only been around humans for a short time, but it seemed that their gossiping had rubbed off on him. It wasn't as if mermaid didn't gossip - they did more so than most sea creatures. It was just a matter of the information shared. Ghost islands were gossip material, but actually going to them was not. If someone went, they'd be called a fool. That was it.
For a moment, Ari considered what to do, before sighing and pushing himself away from the edge of the tank and diving down. He was curious, and that meant going below deck, he supposed. It meant he couldn't partake in the conversation, but he could listen, at the very least.
♦ - ♦ - ♦ The fact that the Captain believed that mermaids were lucky was one thing - but to change his mind was another. Kasper didn't reply, but his eyebrows furrowed a little and he glanced away. It seemed that Hawke was set on going to Zyancie Island, and the semi-reassuring words confirmed that. He wasn't sure about this - didn't like it, either. If both the mershark and the locals talked about things that lined up, there was such a high chance that it was true.
When Tsuyuga made her appearance, he didn't even blink. Somehow, he wasn't surprised. Perhaps very little surprised him, or perhaps he'd felt something was off, he didn't know - but he was a little relieved that she was here. That - the feeling of relief - was a surprise. He barely knew the Appraiser, but he was glad of her intervention, glad that he didn't have to reply to Hawke immediately.
He shifted his weight a little as he watched the two talk, couldn't make much of how vague it all seemed aside from the news that the mer wasn't being sold - which he'd already known, considering he'd been told it before. In his mind, he'd already tried to figure out a proper fishing schedule for the mershark; they couldn't just throw fish in and hope, that would probably get him fat or lazy or something, and Jasper would end up over-worked. But that wasn't the point, he could do his cook's worrying later on. The point now was that Tsuyuga wanted to talk to him, of all people, and that made him a little nervous.
Kasper watched Hawke leave, felt a little prickling sensation at the back of his neck. The Captain had been pleasant enough - though he felt like he was being looked down on - but the demeanour seemed to change when Tsuyuga had appeared. He watched the door for a second before flicking his gaze to her, frowning somewhat.
"I don't suppose you know why he's decided to take a liking to me?" one eyebrow raised, and he shifted his weight back a little.
Hell, he'd been on this ship for as long as he could remember, and he'd been in the galley for most of that - just as he was supposed to be. If people saw him, they'd mistake him for Jasper. That was just how it was supposed to be, and he didn't mind it, for the most part. Being mistaken for his brother meant less interaction. The sudden turn of Hawke recognising him on sight and also interacting with him was surreal.
"And why are you apologising for him?" he had to admit to himself - he was confused. This entire situation? Confusing as anything. He was intelligent and he knew it, but social things were probably not his forte.
