Kasper Joseph Bellerose and Jasper Cain Bellerose were not, contrary to popular belief, identical twins.
People mistook them for each-other anyway. Kasper, someone would say to Jasper, why aren't you in the kitchen? they would ask. Or, the more common Jasper, get in the Crow's Nest, to Kasper. The other pirates did not seem to care that the twins had minor differences, did not seem to notice that Kasper's voice was higher-pitched and softer, didn't notice that he was 5'4'' as opposed to Jasper's 5'3'', didn't seem to care that Kasper kept his hair short and tousled whereas Jasper's was in a tiny ponytail at the base of his neck.
Because they both shared the same inky black hair, dark brown skin and bright green eyes, they were considered the same.
The twins were born pirates from another ship known as the Serpent's Bane. Back in its day, it had been known to be a terror in the sea - and then it had fallen when attacked by some stronger pirates. Such was life. The twins, as the children of the Captain himself, had been sent to shore for safety. They'd later joined Captain Hawke's crew. Such as life. They had been young and foolish then, and were still young but slightly less foolish. Both were in their late twenties, though were often mistaken for younger.
Kasper liked the mermaid. He watched the thing when it was curled up at the bottom of its tank, found entertainment in poking at the glass and watching to see if it would move (it didn't). He'd heard it speak to Levy the previous day, but it didn't seem to care much to speak to anyone else. He wasn't sure what made the ghost so special, but he didn't question it.
"Do you think it's actually lucky?" his brother murmured to him that morning, watching the mermaid with little interest. Jasper didn't care for legends.
"I don't know," he flicked his gaze briefly to the other and then looked away. "Come on. We're going to go find the Appraiser."
Jasper complained without much enthusiasm, but followed along as they were quick to join the Captain and Levy, following along with little noise. Neither twin spoke, more interested in watching the people and mapping out the route that they took in Nawako. Kasper took note of how similar it was to a town that they had lived in once, but didn't make mention of it. Wasn't worth mentioning. There seemed to be little to no conversation, and he would accept that.
If either were surprised by the young girl, they didn't show it. Kasper raised an eyebrow as he listened to the conversation, took note of her name - Tsuyuga - and bit his lip with some amusement. A child yelling at their Captain; that was something interesting, something that he'd have to keep mind of. He couldn't help but grin at the Captain's comment - not in front of my crew - and shook his head slowly. What a day.
And then the Captain came too close, and Kasper felt a crawling sensation on his skin. Jasper seemed to brighten a little at being given the opportunity to show that he was good at something (he wasn't much, though; he was the brawn of the twins, not the brain), and didn't seem to care that he was being touched. Kasper, on the other hand, did not appreciate it.
"Yes, Cap'n!" said Jasper cheerfully. Kasper didn't say a word to his superior, but instead flicked his gaze to the young girl. Handling the arrangements - he'd have to give details, right? Oh well. Whatever.
If there was one thing to be said about Kasper, it was that he was sharp. Often knew the right things to say. However, he had little experience with mermaids (especially ferals), and so he had to take a moment to figure out how to phrase his words. He clicked his tongue lightly before nodding and smiling absently at Tsuguya.
"A feral mer," he said lightly, tapping his brother's leg with his foot to make Jasper remain silent. "About five feet long, shark-based with a black-tipped dorsal fin. Rather pretty, likely on the younger side. He can speak our tongue, too - what sort of price are we looking at for something like that? He isn't even injured from being caught."
Kasper was sure he'd seen scars, but he was no-where near as battle scarred as he'd heard of some merfolk being. He'd heard of great white-based mer with torn limbs and missing eyes, had heard of the whales often having vicious scarring over their bellies. Through the tank, Kasper hadn't been able to see much of the mermaid's body - but he'd remained curled up for the most part. He wasn't pale, and seemed to have freckles, too. He could imagine that maybe, just maybe, the thing would be worth something.
( oh no this is so short im so sorry i was like 'i kinda dont wanna do tsuguya' bc it wouldve ended up being a semi-one-sided thing and i was like aaAAAAa oops ;v; )

“Feral, you say?” Tsuyuga mused in a thoughtful tone, tapping her lips with a manicured nail. A long pause ensued as the Appraiser busied herself with pouring tea into black-and-red bowls for each guest.
Once that was finished, she continued, “Five feet seems a bit small. That’ll bring the price down a bit, but that could easily be solved with some good negotiating━” if it hadn’t been for her bangs, Levy would’ve sworn Tsuyuga had sent a pointed glare in Hawke’s direction. “Excuse me for a moment,” the young Appraiser swept into a short bow before disappearing into the adjoined room.
While she was gone, Levy investigated her bowl of tea. Curls of steam rose from the umber liquid, carrying a scent of leaves and… Was that cinnamon? Hawke seemed to notice her hesitance as he noted, “If you’re not going to drink it, I’ll take it. We’re guests, let’s try not to be rude.”
“It sounds like you’ve already been rude,” she grumbled in retort, remembering Tsuyuga’s fury at the mere sight of Captain Hawke.
“It’s nothing for you to worry about,” was his only comment before downing his tea in a single mouthful.
It sounded like something for her to worry about, if Levy was being honest with herself. Coming here, she’d been under the impression that Hawke and the Appraiser were good friends, but that didn’t appear so. To top it off, the Appraiser looked too young to even know who Hawke was, let alone harbor a grudge against him.
Warily, the young woman took a tentative, slow sip of her tea. Her mouth twisted. It took every inch of resolve not to spit the bitter liquid out immediately. Was tea usually this horrible? Levy forced herself to swallow the vile stuff, glancing at Kasper and Jasper in hopes that they hated it as much as she did. Forget what Hawke said about being polite, Levy couldn’t stomach another mouthful without doing something beyond rude.
Defeated, she slid her bowl to Hawke who scooped it up eagerly and finished the rest of the awful tea without a word of complaint. Perhaps he was used to this.
At that moment, Tsuyuga re-entered the room, a scroll cradled in the crook of her arm. “It appears I have a few clients that would be interested in your mershark. Some foreign dignitaries, a few warlords, the Empress Dowager’s chief counsel, to name a few. And all of them would happily pay any price.” Paper snapped as Tsuyuga unrolled the scroll, presenting a list of what Levy could only assume were clients as it was all written in Free Isle script.
“I’ll have to see him myself before I can decide on a price,” she continued, “But at the moment, I’d say his worth is somewhere in the thousands. The talking might be a problem, though.” Levy stiffened, realizing why exactly that might be a problem. Nobody wanted a pet that could voice their discomforts, their injustices, their boredom. Ari would be considered a nuisance if he didn’t keep his mouth shut. If his owner was benevolent, they might afford him some luxuries. Toys, perhaps even companions, to keep him busy. If they were cruel, however, Ari’s conditions would only get worse. He hated the tank aboard their ship, what would happen if he fell into the hands of a short-tempered warlord who couldn’t be bothered with the mer’s basic needs?
Levy’s nail bit painfully into the soft flesh of her palms as she tried to steer her mind away from all the nightmarish scenarios. That wouldn’t happen right? Not really? Anyone willing to pay such a steep price wouldn’t so easily harm Ari, would they? Some part of her supposed, though, that plenty of people were willing to do away with annoying pets, no matter how expensive. Could the same be said for a living, breathing, intelligent being like Ari?
Tsuyuga rose to her feet suddenly, brushing herself off with a few expert swipes of her hands. “That’s all we can discuss here for now,” she declared, gesturing to the red-lacquered door, “I’ll have to see the animal if you want a solid price. I presume you’re holding him on your ship? Take me there and then we can finish talking.”
Hawke followed the Appraiser’s lead and stood up. Strangely, he made no move toward the door. Instead, he cocked an eyebrow at Kasper (or was it Jasper?), “Well, you heard the lady. Lead the way.” Levy frowned, he really expected the twins to take the reigns here, didn’t he?

Something was unsurprising about the fact that the smaller size would lower the price. From what he'd seen, the mermaid was too small for even the tank aboard the ship; their tank would easily fit a mer that was double the size of the one they had. Then again, they probably wouldn't have been able to catch one bigger - the nets had barely been able to contain the one they'd caught. Hell, it had been a chore to get the mershark into the tank. He had been heavy, apparently.
When Tsuyuga left the room, Kasper looked down at his tea and squinted before trying it. Oh! Not bad. His brother made a face and shook his head a little. Okay, well. Tea was good. Kasper finished both his and his twin's bowls and smiled at the vaguely distressed look on Jasper's face - who then turned his distressed look to Levy and seemed vaguely relieved that she had given the tea a pass, too.
"Alright," Kasper exhaled slowly. Somewhere in the thousands was looking good, at least. He flicked his gaze to Hawke and frowned a little, flickering his gaze to Levy as if to see if she knew why the Captain was leaving the twins to this. Were they supposed to prove themselves? Jasper didn't seem too put-off by it, bouncing to his feet and leading the way with some sort of eagerness. Maybe he was eager to prove himself, but Kasper enjoyed being in the background, enjoyed being part of the kitchen where nobody bothered him unless they were hungry or unless they wanted to know when dinner was. It was just one of those things. He was a backliner, didn't like that he was doing all the talking.
Nonetheless, he led the way back through the streets without a word, ignoring his bouncing brother. Jasper had been half-asleep earlier, but now that he was waking up, he was becoming energetic. Someone would have to deal with that later, and Kasper pitied whoever was about to deal with a bundle of energy.
It didn't take long, he noted, to get back to the ship - and things seemed to be as usual. He paused briefly to glance back at the Captain and Tsuyuga, before swallowing thickly and going towards the tank.
The water was a little murkier than it had been a few - four? - days ago, and he took note that the mershark was...awake? He seemed to be awake, at least. He watched for a moment as a powerful flick of the tail made the mer turn around to them - watched those catlike eyes flick to look at their newcomer.
Kasper saw a glimpse of sharp teeth as the mer opened his mouth, watched the bubbles with some amusement. Next to him, Jasper snorted.
"Not the brightest candle of the batch," said Jasper lightly. Kasper thumped his shoulder and shoved him away without much of a thought, and watched as the mer shifted around again until he was closer to the glass. Seeing him up-close - rather than at the top or bottom of the tank - was interesting. Those freckles were dark, his fangs were sharp and his gills flared. For some reason, it hadn't occurred to Kasper that he'd have gills. It was just a thing that passed over his thoughts. He sighed quietly and turned his head to look at the young girl from the corner of his hand, using one hand to gesture to the creature in the tank.
"That's it," he told her, putting one hand on his hip and shifting his weight. "It moves a fair amount, seems to like basking in the sun, I guess? There's definitely aesthetic appeal."
As if he could hear Kasper, the mer thumped his tail gently against the tank. He could see the thing watching from the corner of his eye, swaying side to side. It reminded him less of a fish and more like...a snake, maybe. The texts that explained how they would sway from side to side, watching their prey. The hair at the back of his neck rose as he thought about just how close he was to the tank right now - but he pushed it away quickly. The mer had had plenty of opportunities to attack. He frowned at this thought, looked back to the Appraiser.
"He seems pretty docile, too. Aside from talking to g--Levy," he flicked his gaze to the woman and frowned a little, "he's had plenty of chances to harm anyone around the tank, but he hasn't."
It could've been a lack of food. Did merfolk need food to survive? Kasper didn't know. He did know that the mer seemed a little livelier now that he was awake - swimming in circles, letting his dorsal fin break the surface of the water from time to time. It was like observing a shark. Made sense, considering he was shark-based. Still fascinating to see. He watched as the mermaid finally stopped his weird circling and went to the top of the tank, resting his arms against the glass and flicking water directly at Levy. Levy, of all people.
If the mer gave a damn about Hawke or Tsuyuga or either of the twins, he didn't show it. Instead, he flicked some more water at the ghost and gave a flash of fangs that was probably a smile, from the upwards twitch of his lips. Okay, Kasper thought, exchanging a glance with his brother, weird.

As Kasper talked, the Appraiser nodded. Whether knowingly or in agreement, Levy couldn't discern.
If Tsuyuga was disappointed, she didn’t show it. The Appraiser stood before the tank, examining the creature within, expression placid. Levy wished she could see her eyes, see the thought and emotion that lingered there, find some hint at Ari’s future. Instead, all she saw was glossy bangs the color of emeralds. She wondered, briefly, where her green hair came from. Was it natural or painted?
The young woman didn’t have long to wonder as a wave of water smacked her in the face. She sputtered, thankfully her glasses had kept most of it out of her eyes. Wiping the lenses, Levy stared at her feet, forcing herself to look anywhere except the culprit.
It was times like these she wished she had telepathy. Stop it! She thought, willing the message to reach Ari. You’re gonna get us both in trouble! And then I’ll be overboard and you’ll be turned into sushi! At least he seemed to be in a good mood. That was something.
Ari didn’t seem deterred by Levy’s telepathic warning as he splashed her again. Was this normal for mermaids? Was this just something they did?
Out of the corner of her eye, she caught a glimpse of Captain Hawke standing aside to let the Appraiser work. He was watching her. Those piercing jewel eyes could have cut her to ribbons. His features were unreadable, the calm surface of a dark lake. Levy could only guess at what lurked beneath that bright, steady gaze. A gaze that shifted lazily between herself and Ari.
Her heart squeezed in her chest, but Hawke said nothing.
Tsuyuga approached the tank, daring closer than Levy would have dreamed. So close that the young woman had to fight the urge to lunge forward and yank her back to safety, fearing Ari might get some ideas. Murderous ideas.
“He’s pretty enough. That’s good. Nobody wants to buy ugly mermaids. He’s male, but he’s a shark, so that shouldn’t hurt the price either. You understand that most of my clients are older men, I don’t think you’ll be surprised to learn that they are usually interested in males. Their interests lie in colorful females.” She drummed her fingertips against her chin, tipping her head this way and that as she watched him. “He’s got some scars. Depending on the buyer, that could be a selling point. The freckles, too, could raise the price. Good temperament. He seems━” Tsuyuga glanced back over her shoulder to Levy “━oddly playful.”
Her breath caught in her throat. What did that mean? Was that good? Was it bad? Was she going to be in even worse trouble because Ari had an interest in her?
Tsuyuga’s attention had officially drifted from the mershark to Levy now. There was an intensity to her that made Levy’s skin prickle with dozens of needles. “Levy, right? One of the Leesh Romani, I can tell. It’s been a little over a decade since I saw one of your people this far south.” There was a note to her tone that Levy couldn’t place, but that she immediately didn’t like. Wait.
Clearing his throat, Captain Hawke made a motion to Jasper, “Go get some fish for it, will you? We can’t have this thing starving to death when we might be selling it soon.” If Levy hadn’t known any better, she might have thought Hawke was purposely trying to change the subject.
“How do you know about my people? We were all but wiped out twelve years ago.” Something in her━ primal and instinctive ━fought to get as far from the Appraiser as possible. Tsuyuga, on the contrary, only drew closer to Levy. As though she were the one being appraised now.
“I’m much older than you think. I’m older than you and Miguel and everyone on this ship combined.” That explained the eerie nature surrounding her. No wonder. Tsuyuga was a witch.
With that revelation, she switched the subject back to the mer. “He seems to like you quite a bit. Any guesses as to why that is?” Tsuyuga inquired.
“I’m… Likeable?”
“Mm. Perhaps. Are you the only girl on this ship?”
“Yes?”
Captain Hawke stepped between them at that moment. Features still unreadable. “Yuga, are you accusing my ship’s doctor of having an affair with a fish?”
The Appraiser held her ground, “I’m saying that if you want to sell him you’ll have to keep them separated, Miguel Hawke. I fear that he might get aggressive if he has connections on this ship that he forced to break. Do you know what happens to aggressive mersharks, Hawke? They are put down in the most violent of manners. Other mermaids? Aggression is considered liveliness. But sharks? Those are dangerous waters.”
For the first time in since she knew him, Hawke backed off, looking defensive but defeated. Taking a step back, he took Levy by the shoulder, taking her with him. As though putting distance between her and Ari would help to relieve the tension. It didn’t. Not in Levy’s mind, at least.
Almost triumphant, Tsuyuga returned to appraising Ari. She waved Kasper closer, beckoning him to further discuss the details of Ari’s worth.
“Good temperament. Pretty face. Freckles and a few scars. Energetic. I’d put him at about five hundred thousand. His size might bring him lower, but it’d be easy enough to put and good spin on it and bring it back up. I’ll give you a few days to think it over,” her head flicked to Hawke before returning to Kasper, “When you’ve come to a decision, contact me and I’ll find you some buyers.”

The merman stopped splashing water when the Appraiser went closer to him, paused his movements to watch her curiously. He seemed like a curious thing - seemed to listen intently. Kasper watched the mershark's nose twitch, watched his lips curl up into something that was akin to amusement. It was a sight to behold. Such a human expression on a non-human face.
"I'm still not an it," his voice was a sing-song, softer than it had been the previous day. Kasper watched the merman's gaze flicked to the Captain and tensed briefly, but there was no aggression in the body language of the thing. He'd seen sharks prepare to attack before, and this was not a beast readying itself to attack. "I am pretty though. Thank you for noticing."
Kasper gave a sharp, slanted glare to the fish and kicked his brother's leg as he was told to get fish. Jasper rolled his eyes upwards and trotted away quickly, vanishing below deck to go to the kitchens. It was more than a little irritating that it was his twin who was told to go the kitchens, considering he didn't work there - but Kasper supposed that if he was the one talking to the Appraiser, then his brother had to have something to do. He still didn't like the idea of Jasper's hands in his supplies, but whatever. Whatever! He'd pretend that he didn't care. At least Jasper returned quickly with a few fish from the fresh catch, not yet salted and freshly dead - though a twitch from one suggested it was still dying. Or partially alive.
"Do I just...throw them all in?" Jasper's tone was uncertain. After a couple of moments, Kasper took one (the one that seemed to be living) and threw it into the tank. To his surprise, it actually began to swim. Oh. Okay. He watched as the mer turned to look at the thing invading his tank, watched the thing observe it and then...ignore it? The fish seemed panicked. How was it even alive? "Eat the goddamn fish," his twin said grumpily, throwing the other two fish in. These two weren't alive. The mer moved quickly - a little too quickly for the human eye - to eat them. They were gone in seconds, and the mershark returned to his position with his arms over the glass of the tank.
"Might be worth throwing in a couple of live fish straight from a catch, if he's going to leave it alive until he's hungry," Kasper piped up softly, watching as the merman glanced back at the live fish whenever it swam too close to him. The fish, seeming to realise its mistake, swam to the other end.
Jasper looked like he was going to argue, but shut up immediately and instead crossed his arms and looked away.
"I'm not going to get aggressive," the merman seemed like he was losing it, though his laugh was soft and dainty, something like a woman's. It wasn't unpleasant. Kasper liked it. "She's not my mate! Levy, your people are strange," he smiled and ducked his head underwater for a moment before lifting it again. "Do you make a habit of becoming mates with men uninterested in women?" there was something teasing about the way he watched Levy.
The implication of the words hit Kasper, and he found himself smiling despite himself.
"I don't think we'll need to separate the mershark and Levy," Kasper glanced at the Appraiser, "if what it--he--is saying is true," he took a moment and ran a hand through his hair. "Thank you, Tsuyuga. I'll come to you in a few days."
He still didn't know why he was being left to speak - but he'd become more confident in himself. Kasper tilted his head towards the green-haired woman and raised an eyebrow. "Is it impolite to ask what tea you served us?"
