The two cats wandered down the ledge, both looking out for bramblepaths scent.
Sparklepelt took the lead and followed the path towards the mountains. Suddenly she stopped dead, right infront of a rock covered in blood.

Bramblepath suddenly realised he was bleeding, his blood trickling down the rocks beside him and finding the black cats feet. He was muttering quietly to himself, as if he were having an argument. He seemed agitated almost angry, but Bramblepath could see no one nearby. He had heard tales of the dark forest as a kit of course and the legendary leaders in Bramblestar and Firestar. But they had been destroyed? Hadn't they?

Sparklepelt was silent. This had to be bramblepaths blood.
Although the sight unnerved her, it meant they must be getting closer. Maybe they'd be able to track bramblepaths scent again?
keeping low, sparklepelt continued padding past the blood covered rock. she could scent something strong. it wasn't bramblepath, but maybe it was the cat that took him?
She carried on following the scent, silverpaw following behind her.
After a while, they reached a shadowed clearing.
In the distance, sparklepelt heard a pained yowl.

Before Bramblepath could react the cat began to attack him, it was furious and intense with no remorse. He let out a screech and as he did so he caught the scent of Spraklepelt.

Sparklepelt began to run towards the sound. She found a cave.

Bramblepath was bleeding out now and the black cat turned his gaze back towards silverpaw and sparklepelt. "And who would you two catssss beeee?"

The black cat leaped forwards throwing Sparklepelt against the side of the cave wall, his large bustling muscles overpowering her instantly. He hissed as he drew herself to her feet.

Sparklepelt thrashed at him with her claws. The fierce instinct to protect bramblepath was taking over, she would do anything to make sure he was okay.
How could she live without him?
She growled furiously at the big cat and snapped at his neck with her teeth.

Despite the bit cats advantage he had seen something in the she cats eyes that scared him. He pushed at her aggressively swiping his claws and pushing her towards the wall. But she kept coming no fear in her eyes as he was so used to. "You will die she cat!!"

Sparklepelt would stop at nothing to save bramblepath. her heart hurt at the sight of him so helpless as she battled the big cat.
she was grateful for silverpaw joining in the battle, maybe this would give them the edge.
the two cats worked together to weaken the big cat.
She kept fighting on until she jumped at the cat with all her strength and pinned him to the ground.
"Why did you take bramblepath?" she hissed

"the dark forest?" sparklepelt growled, tightening her grip on the cat "what is that? who are you? why do you need to take him there?"

"like id tell you slimy clan cat" came the viscous reply, but suddenly the cat toppled to the ground his eyes empty. His breathing stopped and his claws lay uslessly at his side. He was dead.

Sparklepelt stepped back in shock. What just happened?!What was the dark forest?
And most importantly: was bramblepath okay?

Bramblepath scrambled to his feet feebly, "Sparklepelt" he moaned. His vision was fading, his paws feebly hanging by his sides. "i love you"

Sparklepelt whirled around. Had she heard him right? He loved her? Every fibre of her being lit up. She no longer cared about anything! Bramblepath loved her.
And she was certain she loved him.
"i love you too bramblepath" she whispered, "you're gonna be okay"
She rested her head on top of his and began licking his wounds gently.

As Sparklepelt began to lick his wounds Bramblepath felt for the first time in his life content and safe. With the little strength he had left he wrapped his tail around her. Then he faded away as his energy faded.
