I'm kind of pissed and slightly depressed that I feel like i can't wear my mjolnir necklace out in public anymore because of the white supremacy issue here. It actually really hurts because most of you know that's kind of an important religious thing for me, but lately with how many norse pagans seem to be rallying for nazi bullcrap I just can't in good conscience wear it openly now.
I'll still have it in my pocket but the chain is too short to go under a shirt collar and even if it was it's slightly bulky so it'd be obvious I had something under my shirt anyway but just
I shouldn't have to hide or be ashamed of my religion or the symbols associated with it but I am because it's the few who ruin it for the many. Nobody should. using the winged Odal rune and the reversed swastika both fall in that category too. Though because of it's most prominent usage the swastika in any form is almost a taboo. But they're replacing it WITH the winged rune and UGH. This is actually a major concern within the community too because of the 'folk/kin believers' that think you can only worship the gods if you're actually a descendant, and therefore white. And not a week after norse paganism became a legally recognized religion a couple months ago by the government, the pentagon started trying to get it listed as a hate group.

People are always going to ruin the fun, esp. with how high tensions are running in the world the way it is now
The best we (Pagans, in this case, but really anyone who feels part of a wronged group) can do is stay firm to our beliefs and values, stick together, make peace as much as we can and ride it out. Hopefully the wrong-doers will get what was coming for them, and in due time the symbol won't be stuck with such an instantly negative connotation all the time :/
Imo people need to recognize there is in fact a huge divide between alt-right Neo Nazi protesters, and regular brand Pagans just trying to go about their daily routines. That's why those of us not involved in any sort of violent extremism need to make our voices heard (in a positive light, of course)

Is that really a thing? White supremacists hijacking Norse pagan symbols? I didn't know about that. Awful. Why do these people have to ruin everything?

Yep. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Odal_(rune)#Modern_usewww.adl.org/education/references/hate-symbols/thors-hammerUnfortunately with all the raucous going on, people don't read context behind the symbol so much as the symbol itself, esp with so many photos circulating right now of people wearing those things as jewelry and tattoos or putting them on racist flags.

That sucks, Leap. Sorry to hear about that. It's always a shame when people take a relatively harmless symbol and turn it into something hateful, like the swastika for instance.

I wouldn't wear it just for your safety. I'm all for beating the crap out of Nazis and white supremacists, but I would feel awful if somebody got hurt that was just minding their own business and wearing a symbol that meant something to them.

It really sucks that you can't wear what you want without being associated with something else, in your case, that terrible movement.
I really hope it dies down so that you can wear the necklace again.
