OOC Remember Cinnamonster?
Well today I tried to bake some chocolate chip cookies. So far...they aren't shaping well. I should probably just stop making desserts. Or food in general.

OOC I've already heard that from my sister plenty, I don't need to hear it again. I've been baking for a long time and only recently have had all these failures. I burnt my hand while getting them out because I was trying to make sure the dog didn't get hurt, so now my hand is in pain, the cookies don't even look edible and I. Am. Never. Baking. Again.
Here's a pic:
Like seriously, what the heck? This is only a recent thing too, because I used to make things that actually looked and tasted good.

Are you using recipes or making them up? If you're using recipes from online, sometimes it's just a bad one. That's where I get all of mine from and I used to never read the reviews, and so many of my desserts were ruined. Most looked fine but tasted awful. Now I always read the reviews. And I skip over any recipe where the reviews just say "this looks so good!" but no one actually tried it.
Sorry if this doesn't apply to you.

OOC I doubt they will, they don't even look like cookies. I'm currently taking name suggestions for these little gremlins.

OOC I'm finding them online, but then I gotta use gluten free flower so it's a little different. I just don't get it, everything I made until Cinnamonster was good, yet now??? We're just getting crappy thing after another.

cookie monster's regurgitation
looks like you used too much butter/shortening/oil, and/or possibly not enough egg to work as a binding agent do you remember your measurements?

Is the recipe for regular flour or gluten free?
Sometimes the type of flour makes a difference, so unless it calls for a certain type it can ruin it. I made banana bread for my mom with gluten free flour and it turned out awful. For some reason all of the flour separated from the bread and rose to the top and the "bread" underneath was still basically liquid even though it was cooked.
Then I used the exact same recipe, except I used regular flour, and it was perfect. And the gluten free flour I used said it was meant for baking so I don't know.

It's like it morphed into one giant cookie???
Are you sure you spaced them out properly and everything? Sometimes looks can be deceiving before they go into the oven, certain recipes spread like crazy once they're inside.
Other than that, can't really think of what might have gone wrong? Some ovens are just super sensitive to temperature changes and stuff too. Happens a lot with new stoves/before you get used to them, in my experience anyway.
Don't take it personally though. Some recipes are just not tried and true, so it's more likely to be that than your baking skills...

Baking gf is really different and more difficult than normally whipping up a batch of cookies. I've done it before, but it requires a lot of different kinds of weird ingredients and costs more, so I try to avoid it except when I bake for one of my friends who are allergic to gluten. It's not as easy as it looks. You can't just substitute gf flour for any recipe. Most gf recipes call for special ingredients, not just the gf flour. Like xanthan gum and all that crazy expensive stuff. I'm not saying don't do it, but it's different than normal recipes. There are some recipes that are good with just a good gf flour. Look at the ingredients in your gf flour, and make sure it has xanthan gum in it. There are other ingredients that are required, but I forgot the names. You'd just have to do some more research on it. Don't give up, because mistakes are how you learn to try better next time

one time my sister and I were making M&M cookies and I put a whole bunch of green food coloring into the dough (along with all the green M&Ms) but I didn't realize she had substituted honey for sugar
so we ended up with these spongy sickly green pancake type things
they tasted pretty good though

you're welcome I wish I had actual cooking tips to share but I'm a disaster in the kitchen OOC I'll be honest with you, hearing about other people's kitchen disasters makes me feel better when I'm in a slump, instead of getting a bunch of advice. So no, this was good.

At least yours look like they'd taste good and are actually edible...one time, I turned the oven on at 400 instead of 300 for shortbread cookies (they bake 20 mins) and not once did I check them while they were baking
They were blacker than a midnight on a moonless night. They also permanently stained my mom's favorite baking sheet...
