I know there's mixed opinions on how people actually mail animals (lizards, snakes, beardies, etc), but to me, I think it's okay as long as the animal has everything it needs, and makes it a 1-day shipping only. But I do understand others' concerns about shipping animals. Sometimes the person puts it in awful packaging, or they could get lost in the mail and might possibly even die.
I'm neutral on the idea itself. If there's no store to get your leopard gecko, or bearded dragon, then sadly shipping is the only way to go if you don't have a reptile store near you. It really just depends on how they ship their animal, whether it'll come to your home alive or not.

The packaging and handling is definitely a make-or-break for me too
If it's a reptile they should make sure the poor thing has adequate heat and food for the duration of it's journey. Heck, I bought both of my leopard geckos in the summertime and even just carrying them home from the pet store in the little crates was enough to make them chilly/slow for awhile, and that was only a 10 minute drive

Apparently right before my previous Betta fish was shipped to our city they had a whole truckload of them crash on the side of the road and pretty much the whole shipment of fish died :'( I cried just thinking about it. The few who survived didn't last long and they didn't end up shipping any to our area until about a month later.

The animals you buy at a store were almost always shipped from somewhere to that store, unless they buy from local breeders. But even then, I guarantee that local breeder has purchased some of their reptiles from someone online.
Shipping is stressful, yes, but everything about moving into a new terrarium in a different location is stressful, even if you buy it locally. As long as you purchase the animal from a reputable breeder, there is almost no danger in having them shipped because they will be packaged correctly. At least 30 of my reptiles and arachnids have been shipped to me and I've never encountered any issues. Same goes for most people that order or ship reptiles. Didn't notice any difference in stress levels from shipping vs picking them up locally, because either way they have to adjust to a new environment.

*cracks knuckles*
I think it honestly depends on the animal. I think most places ship reptiles well as they are expensive and need handled with care. The frogs that are shipped to my work (petco) are shipped in little plastic tupplewear like dishes that either have moist moss or paper towels, which I think is very adequate. Same goes with snakes.
Lizards are either shipped the same way or in a bag with shredded paper in it. They are then in a second box with styrofoam and a hot pack/ cold pack, which to me is a good idea.
Fish at my store are shipped okay. Im not sure on a solution to ship better but I think its okay. They arrive in boxes that are lined with styrofoam and a hot/cold pack in medium sized bags.
Hermit crabs are shipped super poorly in my mind, at the same time its the funniest thing ever. The place we get them from literally ships them in chinese take out boxes with moist paper towels in them, so you open up a take out container and you have a small box of hermit crabs. Its safe, I just feel bad since they are literally piled ontop of each other.
ON THE OTHER HAND, small animals are treated the best in my mind. They are kept in ventilated boxes with bedding and usually a veggie of some kind and hand delivered to us. A guy in an APET (the company we get the animals from) hand delivers our animals to us.
