my campers at band camp could not stop singing Heathers and Hamilton songs all week and i was reminded of this burning curiosity i have regarding musicals
so. musical fans. i know Hamilton was a big thing for a while and i get that it's apparently brilliant but i'm curious as to how people can be fans of musicals they haven't even seen. like at least where i am it was super hard to get tickets to see it yet so many people were obsessed with it. is it just the soundtrack that drew you in or do you watch live footage or something?? i don't understand how the fanbase for a musical can grow so quickly

Yep. I just listen to the soundtracks. Since it is a musical, you can usually get the gist of the story if not the entire story from the songs. Just start with track 1 and go in order. Some musicals also have fan-made animatics that are an artist's interpretation of the song c:

OOC: Well, I don't know if I should admit this but I've tracked down a bootleg to almost every musical I've ever gotten into and I don't know how. Rp:

I mostly just listen to the soundtrack of Hamilton. There's nothing pivotal to the story that can't be heard within the music. Although I actually am seeing it soon on Broadway.

I've fallen out of love with Hamilton, but Heathers is still my jam
you can still be a fan of something you haven't finished or even seen, I've listened to all of the musical's songs and I know the story, I can't even see Heathers the Musical anymore, I still like it

i mean the reason that i like musicals is for the music. going and seeing a live show is just a bonus tbh? since when you see a musical 90% of the whole show is music. and most of that is on the original soundtrack. there might only be one or two songs that are left off the ost. like i don't really like les mis because i don't like the music that much. so i have literally no interest in it (altho i went and saw a local production and it was awesome). i like wicked and went to see the live production of that and that was fun~ and i like the music from hamilton but honestly have 0 interest in actually going and seeing it because ?? i don't care much abt it anymore and i really didn't care to see it when the actual music came out. but i still listen to the music sometimes.
but i mean the same goes for like movie musicals. i loved the songs in moana and hadn't seen the movie and i still listen to the music now. and a lot of other music in disney movies. some movies i listen to the music and i don't even care for the movie that much. i just like the songs.
also there's 3 movies/musicals that i grew up with so i know most if not all the music to those without having watched/seen most of them. they're Rent, Moulin Rouge, and Chicago. (which are all movies which is why my mom liked them a lot)

I do not understand why people ?? Enjoy just listening to the songs tbh Like ... maybe it's because I think in pictures But ? Isn't the whole thing about theater the costumes and the acting and the way the story is woven i mean ... if you think of it like an album that just tells a story, how is it any different than a mainstream artist putting out a whole album? most songs don't have things to go along with them. and i think of soundtracks as more of album than i do a soundtrack to a production tbh.

Honestly having seen one musical live and another on video I'm probably not an expert but the cinematics for both of the musicals I saw were pretty intensive so ehh? only the two I saw were into the woods and phantom of the opera so I'm not really sure what to think

Honestly having seen one musical live and another on video I'm probably not an expert but the cinematics for both of the musicals I saw were pretty intensive so ehh? only the two I saw were into the woods and phantom of the opera so I'm not really sure what to think sorry for clarification i meant most songs outside of musicals don't have anything to go along with them. except for the occasion it's a single it'll probably have a music video for it but that's abt the extent of videos to go along with music. i mean really it's not like you're thinking abt musicals wrong, or music in general. im just more of saying how people can only listen to the music not having seen the musical. i have a pretty vivid imagination so like. i can listen to a lot of music esp stuff without lyrics and imagine whole scenes for them. so like listening to music from a musical not having seen it doesn't really kill it for me. esp if i like the music a lot. i just usually don't tend to associate a soundtrack with a musical. like for example. my favorite version of Summer Nights from Grease is the Glee version. imho that's the best version of the song out there. ive. literally never seen the Glee version of glee. nor have i seen the movie version. ive seen one local high school production but that's v low budget and not very close to the source material. some songs it does make me feel things that when i watched the movie i get to relive the feelings of the movie. like Test Drive from how to train your dragon. or Come What May from Moulin Rouge. good stuff. but like the song Elephant Love Medley, i don't really know how that scene goes in Moulin Rouge but it's my favorite song from the soundtrack. so like i think it's really preference but like. idk to me they're just songs that just so happen to be part of something larger but the larger part doesn't mean that much to me as the music itself. sorry for this long winded post x3

Tickets to Hamilton are always super expensive, it doesn't matter where you live. I was first drawn to it due to the soundtrack. In fact, unless I see a screen adaptation of the musical (if one is available) or if there's a concert performance of it on TV, that's how I'm usually first drawn into a certain musical and just imagine what the characters are doing while singing.
I've only ever seen two (Wicked and The Lion King; three if you count seeing Anastasia online), and even then I already loved them by just the music alone (as well as their animated counterparts in terms of the latter two).
Tickets for any musical are going to be pretty expensive, but the soundtracks are available for anyone.
