apparently there is no social studies/history class for my grade this year. not sure why. everyone else in my grade is thrilled, of course, because they think it's the most boring thing ever but I'm legitimately bummed, man. history is my thing. I'm actually considering trading out one of my electives for a history class when school starts. why can't I have normal interests

history is actually Interesting and Important and Necessary so idiots don't repeat the actions of other idiots in the past
i find it gross when textbooks leave out certain details about important things bc people, esp impressionable children, need to know all the bad and good affects actions in history have made so they can evaluate whether or not it's good for those things to happen again
sorry for mini rant But

tbh I'd be one of the happy people. Like I know that history is important and all but I was just never interested in it at all. I'd much rather take a science class, honestly. Or math even. Just not history or, heaven forbid, geography

May I continue? So I live in good ole historic Pennsylvania, and one of my favorite Civil War sites is indeed Gettysburg, as a history nerd. And there is this whole idea floating around that it would be a good idea to remove the monuments of the Southern leaders. But I (and lots of other people I know) am TOTALLY against this. We can't just rewrite history to our liking because you can't change what happened. They aren't just stories you can backspace or erase they are real and they teach valuable lessons about the consequences good and bad of our actions and these people that impacted our lives on such a enormous scale. But we can't learn from history if people don't know there were mistakes. We live in an imperfect world but pretending that it isn't doesn't make it better.

It's a part of our history, whether people like it or not. Erasing all traces of it and pretending it didn't happen isn't going to improve anything. It would be unfair to future generations. Not only that, but it seems kind of shallow (probably not the right word) to be trying to cover up our mistakes like that.
Off-topic a little bit, but I was recently in historic Pennsylvania. Beautiful state, the parts of it that I saw. I had the opportunity to spend a day at Gettysburg (not nearly long enough for me, but it was part of a larger tour so we couldn't stay) and it was incredible. I really need to go back some time to better absorb the experience. Kind of hard to appreciate the meaning behind it when you're with 54 other rowdy, disrespectful kids.

I feel you 100% Like history is my absolute fave! I took my last history class junior yr of hs and was pretty upset when I couldn't take one senior yr bc there weren't any and then in college, bc I passed the apush exam, I got out of taking the history classes that I would have had to take but I was like ok of course the one class I actually enjoy I can't take o:

I keep wondering if apush is really worth it, esp since I've been told it's a heckuva lot of work

A lot of times I wonder if the reason people do this is because they're, embarassed about their history? And are so concerned about how people will judge them based off of what their forefathers did that they feel the need to cover it up. But this is so backwards, almost, because that's what they did in the medieval times. A king oversaw what his servants and the monks documentsd about current events abd if he didn't like what they wrote he could order them to change it to make him or a friend or family member look better. Which, like you said, is wrong and kind if shallow. Wow lol I'm glad you liked our state xD It is especially beautiful out East in Autumn, and I highly suggest if you visit again that you go on a covered bridge tour. It's gorgeous. Gettsburg is really an awesome yet solemn place to visit. It's also personal for me since I had distant ancestors who fought and it means so much more. It can also be a very creepy place, though. Going at different times/holidays really seems to effect the atmosphere in an almost bad way. There are just some nights/evenings where you can just FEEL their presence. But yeah, I agree. My brother wants to go with me but he and wife would have to bring their two toddlers, and it's always harder going places with kids. But I love to go to the different observation towers, and Devils Den and Little Round Top are my personal favorites

Agree 100%. Seems hypocritical to try to change our history to make ourselves look better. When did we suddenly get so self-conscious?
I visited Pennsylvania back in June as part of a class trip. We only stopped at Philadelphia and Gettysburg, but I'd like to go back to see what else the state has to offer! It's definitely on my bucket list to go to Gettysburg again, tho. It was raining when we were there and for that reason we toured the entire battlefield on a coach. I'd rather walk around in the drizzle and experience it up close, personally. I mean, c'mon, I'm an Oregonian, since when does rain phase me? xD
Fortunately, towards the end of the day it cleared up. We got to see a beautiful sunset over the battlefield at Devils Den. I was hanging in the back of the group to ask the tour guide questions, and I hadn't noticed everyone else had gotten back on the bus, so I got to have the place to myself for about 10 minutes as I walked back. That was when I was able to really appreciate it. Haunting is the best word to describe it. It was so quiet and peaceful. Hard to imagine that 150+ years ago there were cannons firing and soldiers dying everywhere. Everybody else was too distracted by fireflies to pay attention to the history

^^ ya, I'd take apush bc even though it stinks not being able to take it in college if you get a high enough score, it is good to have already taken bc it is costly for books and coming in with more credits will take a load off from you when all is said and done

Dude I feel you history is awesome. History is my life. Same. I thought I was the only one into history on this site. Almost everyone I've ever interacted with online or irl finds it to be the most boring subject on the face of the earth but as for me, don't even get me started on the founding fathers because I can, will and have prattled on for over an hour about them

Yeah, I'm not an expert on history at all, but I still love it and I'm planning on taking more classes involving history.
