Hi! If you've been paying attention to the Forum Anniversary topic, you'll see that Forum Mafia was a decently popular suggestion, so we've finally decided to make it a reality!
My cohost is ❴ ғα∂ιηg ✦ яεαℓιтү ❵ . If I ever say that "I" will do something, I actually mean we both can. So they can prod you for inactivity, update the vote count during the day, and narrate as well.
Here, you can ask us any questions you have about the game as well as sign-up to be a player or a substitute (someone who watches the game carefully and, if needed such as if a player breaks the rules or is too inactive, will replace the player in the game. They will have the same role as the person they are subbing for.)

About
Before I start, I just want to say that I have the most knowledge of Town of Salem Forum Mafia, so that will be the main inspiration for this game and role list, and my co-host has experience with it IRL. I would link an example game for you all to read to see what you’re getting into, but while the ToS forum is public, you have to have an account to read the Forum Mafia section. Also, they’re usually ~90+ pages anyways so… yeah… lol. Of course, to avoid confusing people who have only played the classic version of Mafia, we plan to introduce as few new roles as possible. Also forewarning, I am NOT an expert at balancing games. If anyone feels that the role list is too unbalanced in either faction’s favor, please let me know. However, remember that the Mafia is always at a disadvantage because there is more Town, and to introduce a ton of Power Roles for the Town would just scare the Mafia more.
If this game is successful, we would love to host more games (and add new roles, as you will see in the second post, Town has almost no power roles this game). We would also like to give them themes (Ace Attorney and Danganronpa are popular themes), but for now we don’t want to turn off potential players by confusing them with such things.
For those who have played the real life party game Mafia, this is a forum-based version of that. For those who have played the online game Town of Salem, this is also a forum-based version of that. Each player gets assigned a role (sometimes unique, sometimes not) and a way to win. The biggest differences between this and normal Mafia is that there are more players and the days are longer (to give more time to strategize and discuss, but also to accommodate for time zones). This means that, unlike in Mafia where you can pretty much just out yourself as Sheriff and call out the Mafia, you will need to rely more on scum-reading (aka read into how other players are acting). Someone is oddly quiet, maybe they are an evil trying to lay low? They could also be a bored citizen, someone with a power role trying to stay low, or something akin to that. Or they’re just busy, that's possible too lol.
There are 2 factions: Town and Mafia. Town must beat Mafia, while Mafia must beat Town. Refer to role cards below for more info on win conditions.
The Mafia knows who they are, but the Town starts without knowing who anyone else is. Likewise, the Mafia starts without knowing what the other Players are besides themselves.
The game is made up of a Day and Night phase. During the day, this topic is open for everyone to post and contribute. They can also vote another player up to the stand (please bold, underline, or italicize your vote so we can see it). At night, no one should post and instead turn to their own thoughts. My co-host and I plan to chat with every player on Discord for their Last Will, Death Note (possibly), and night actions. During the night, the mafia chat (a group Discord between me, my co-host, and the mafia) will be alive. During the day, no one should post in the mafia chat. I say should for both of these cases because I can’t really enforce such things other than subbing you if we get enough subs. The next day, I will reveal in narration who died.
The longer days and nights gives you plenty of time to think about what to do and what to post, so this will be far less chaotic than a typical Mafia/Town of Salem game. The next few points will be about the game, so feel free to skip it if you think you’ve got the basic gist.
Each killing role gets a Death Note that they can write anything in. These will show up the next morning unless you forget to give me one. Please make it a reasonable length. Here’s an example I came up with before:

At night, players with a power role perform an action. Some investigate others, some kill others, etc. We will clarify what each role does at night in the Role List below. These actions MUST be given to us bolded in the Mafia Chat (if you are mafia) or in our personal chat with you if you are not Mafia. At the end of the night, we will tell you and only you what happened regarding your night action (if you died, what your investigation result is, etc.). This is a given, but Mafia members should share with each other what happens the next night if something doesn’t go as planned. You can choose to do /no action instead, if you feel it is safer (such as if you’re the Vigilante).
ALL players get a Last Will they can write in. These wills can only be updated by replying to our private chat with you. We will accept updates at any time to the exception of the end of the night you die (for example, if a Sheriff finds a Mafia on the same night they die. Even if they wanted to update in their last will that that person is Mafia, we would not accept the change. “Dead men tell no tales” ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) amirite?). Last Wills will show up the morning you die, or at the end of the day if you were lynched.
Roles will be chosen randomly by a website we found. Please don’t complain if you get a role you don’t like, that’s unfair to all of us and there is always next game to get a cooler role. You get what you get and you don’t get upset!
With each phase, one of us will edit the title. So for example on Day 1 we will put DAY 1 in the title. If the game is over, we will write GAME OVER in the title.
After the game is over, the topic will be open for game discussion where people can say what they thought about the game and the players involved/the strategies used. Anyone can post at this time, including those who were just watching the game silently, players, or players who died. We will also probably reveal the Mafia Chat for future reference so you guys can see how the Mafia strategized. (possibly through screenshots, not sure at the moment.)
Days can end early if we get a majority vote. If you play ToS, this will be different from that system. You don’t get to vote guilty or innocent: if a person is voted up, they die. A majority vote means 1/2 the number of players still alive + 1, so for example if we have a full game of 15 players, on day 2 presuming 2 people died, we would have 13 players. A vote of 7 people would be needed to put someone up. You can also cast /no vote as well. If we get a majority vote of no votes, the day will still end early.
You can only vote for one person (or cast no vote) at a time.
If a majority vote is cast, we may wait to execute that person until they are able to give a defense (if they have avoided doing so or have not been on).
In our private chats with you on Discord, we will distribute roles and will answer questions you have in the first day. You can also update your Last Will, Death Note (if applicable), and give us night actions there. We will also set up a group Discord for the Mafia. No other group Discords will be set up (for example, players that try to team up will not be allowed to make their own Discord to chat at night - only the Mafia can do this.)
On Discord, you can also tell us how you want to die. As the narrator, we will have to post descriptions each morning and each time someone is executed. So if you are lynched, how do you want to go out? Screaming your innocence to the last breath? Feel free to write it yourself if you want to!
Also, as most of you who have played Mafia know, nothing can really be done until the first night phase (anyone lynched in first day is more than likely to be town). As a result, Day 1 will be shortened, only ~12/24 hours (input appreciated!). It will start once we have distributed all role cards and set up the Mafia Chat and chats with everyone. It can also end early if everyone tells us "I have no more questions, I am ready for the game to start" or something to that effect. During Day 1, this is the only time where I and my co-host will answer any and all questions you have about your role, including what-if scenarios. we will answer other questions if we feel they are necessary throughout the game, but this will be the best time for you to ask us stuff. For the Mafia Chat, it will only be opened for the mafia to greet each other. I will ask that no strategizing be discussed until the Night Phase, and again if people have questions about their role, they can post it in the Mafia Chat. - Anyone who is not an official player, PLEASE do not post in the game topic once it is posted. You may spectate WITHOUT disrupting and post your thoughts after the game is finished.
- Similarly, dead players, please do not post in the game topic after you die. You can spectate and post after the game is finished.
- Please do not post in the Mafia Chat during the day phase.
- Alive players, please do not post in the game topic during the Night Phase.
- No new topics are to be made about this game in the forum or in PM/Discord to discuss strategy, other than the existing topic and Discord chats with me and my co-host.

Joining
If you would like to join, just say so. We don’t actually have a joining form. :’DDD but please be explicit (i.e. if you just say “Sounds fun” I will assume you’re not joining and just commenting for the sake of commenting). We'll be looking for at least 8 players, with a max of 15. If we don't get the maximum, we'll remove certain power roles.
