trope. n. an overused plot device or cliche. normally I avoid these like the plague unless they're well-written or appropriate to the story, but there are a few I'm a total sucker for:
- grumpy jerk™ and ray of sunshine™ are best friends - bonus points if other characters ship them despite their adamant denial of "we're juST FRIENDS" - double bonus points if they do have feelings for each other but are both convinced it's unrequited - friends to lovers - rivalsto friends to lovers - frenemies with a sibling-like bond with the whole "I can't stand you but I would die for you" thing - awkward villain-turned-hero that becomes the weird uncle - short characters fueled by rage - there's probably a lot more that I can't remember now rip

found. family. lovable band of misfits. yes. 'character a looks at character bs exposed strip of skin when he reaches for something' the high school au plot (a and b meet. they hang out and develop crushes. they kiss for the first time or something. they have a falling out. they triumphantly get back together, aided or unaided by friends.)
- Found family!!! Exclamation points because I would truly die for this one. - Sad suburban kids who just want to Get Out of This Town. - Friends to lovers, always always always. - Rivals (to probably begrudging allies) to lovers, as long as they don't, like, hugely mistreat each other during the rival stage. (Meaning, like, I'm down with "two ambitious teens fighting for valedictorian in a tiny school eventually fall in love," not "kid falls in love with their bully" or whatever.) - The Mom Friend™. - The Obnoxious Sibling Friend™. - Tragic backstories, as long as they're not being used to excuse a villain's actions or something. (Cool motive, still murder.) - "If you're the gay cousin and I'm the gay cousin, then who's flying the plane?"
-The Angsty(TM) plot of unrequited love when a girl's best friend's lover is a sickening annoying Mary Sue and she has to live with his mooning over her until one day he finds out via girl's supportive wingman/wingwoman that his (former) best friend doesn't like his lady lover and is pissed until he realizes why... -high school drama with the player bad boy who's actually a secret sweetheart -friends to lovers -the guy who won't admit his feelings for the girl until her ex shows up and he gets j e l l y -that one funny guy that we all secretly love even though he's just there for comic relief -sweet and sassy girl has secret doubts that she's good enough for her hot boyfriend and is hurt when she is led to believe he's secretly dating the beautiful woman who the girl considers her friend

Friends (or lovers) to rivals who still care a lot about each other but try to hide it is one of my absolute favourites, I am such a sucker for it, it gets me every time. It has such angst potential! Will character A abandon their ideals and their dreams to save character B? aaaaa
This is sort of similar to the first one but everything in the sense of "we want the same thing but we will go very different ways to achieve this" is the best, partially because it is an excellent gateway to "friends to rivals," ahh, I love it.

aaa, these are all so good. I'm mostly a sucker for romance tropes, but family/friendship ones are fantastic too and need more love
and shoutout to december for knowing the difference between character falling in love with their bully vs. two competitive "rival" characters slowly falling for each other. I like rivals to lovers as long as it's done reasonably. not a fan of people shipping characters that clearly hate each other and writing it off as "sexual tension" just for the angst tho. that seems too toxic/abusive to me. off-topic, but something that bugs me whenever it comes up

Thanks! The difference is really important to me, too. I just wanted to clarify that I don't ship abuse lmao.

Nah, I get it. I'm glad you get the importance of it, too. Just brought up the abuse thing bc it's a trope that bugs me. contradictory to this thread, but wanted to share it while it was on my mind, heh.

No, I meant I wanted to clarify in my original comment. You're good! It's just a topic that's important to me, I guess.
- FOUND FAMILY - Grumpy abrasive character having a soft spot for younger characters and basically adopting them (NOT ROMANTIC) - "You're not allowed any weapons in here" *takes out an obscene amount of weapons from small space* "All of them" *produces more* "ALL of them" *produces one last tiny knife* - When two girls start off hating each other for some reason but gradually become great friends (see; Alina and Zoya from the Grisha trilogy) - God tier version of last trope; they become girlfriends - one bitter character who is always right - characters falling asleep on each other but deny this when they wake - friends that adore each other but don't bother hiding it (i'm looking at look brooklyn nine-nine) - The Jaws theme tune popping up for no reason - The happy and sweet character being hinted at doing something awful in the past, but no one ever finds out what - other animals acting like dogs
Post by Card against Humanity on Jul 24, 2017 8:34:41 GMT -5
- found family - cute kittens - "you're not allowed any x in here!" *takes out tons of x* "ALL OF THEM!" *takes out one tiny version of x* - *person gets hurt very badly in a comedic way* "I'M OKAY!" - characters betting on something, and then when the thing actually happens you see them exchanging $5 - animal sidekicks [as long as they're actually cute instead of annoying] - huge animal turns out to be rlly chill and nice [bonus points if its a dog] - when two people hate each other at first but then gradually become friends [again, as long as its done well/believably] - grumpy/jerk character has a soft spot for another character - *character causes tons of chaos to happen* *deadpan* "oops" - colour-coding - siblings who occasionally argue but still care about each other a lot
-overarching themes -animal symbolism -found family like everyone else said -rivals to friends to lovers, as long as it's done believably and isn't creepy -villains that were in the exact same situation the hero is in at one point -villains very similar personality-wise to the hero -gray-and-gray morality -sidekicks that actually do things -the servile snarker -trickster archetype -The stepford smiler, only because of the complex characters it can create though -villains hiding in plain sight -villains manipulating people to do their bidding instead of just sheer force -when the plot starts out happy and innocent but gets darker as the story progresses
edit: wait I use all of these in the same story what the hell

Someone's coming into a room, a person in the room spots them and yells "Quick, act natural" to everyone else in the room, and then they all proceed to get into the weirdest poses.
Also, I like the trope where someone pulls more weapons than they can feasibly fit on them from their pockets.
-the bad*ss female having a tortured past and actually being extremely emtionally vulnerable and compromised. -that one smol character we all love who inevitably is going to suffer because he's so innocent -sibling relationships between characters that used to distrust/hate each other and getting really awkward when people ask if they're a couple because they consider the other a brother or sister
