So, I'm writing a story, but I've hit a bump in the road, if you know what I mean. For the most part, I have the middle and ending of the book planned out (in my mind), but I have no idea how to write the beginning! I feel like I'm moving too fast or that it doesn't even make any sense. I was wondering if anyone has any tips to help with the problem I'm having. It's just so aggrivating! I've started over at least four times now! Thanks! ~brokendusk

whenever I get writer's block I try not to think too much on it, otherwise it just burns me out. I step back, reevaluate , and maybe listen to some music to clear my head. Sometimes I purposely listen to songs that remind of my characters story plot etc., and that way, I often get inspiration on certain scenes and how to incorporate them.
A lot of the time this happens, I try to work it backwards or forwards, depending on what I'm stumped on. For example, if you're having a hard time coming up with a good beginning, just ask yourself, "what position is my character in now? Is this where/how they've always been/acted? Does it improve their character to have them change since the beginning of the story? if they have changed since the beginning, how did it happen? what were they like before? does their evolution affect the plot? did the plot cause the disruption?"
This is just little bit of my advice. If you want some more, lemme know. I'm actually in the process of working on my own story! Good luck!

Thanks! I just feel like I have so many characters to keep up with and they all play some role that ties everything together, and it's just making it all more difficult!

try writing an overview of your story out! just a page or two should do it. what will it look like from beginning to end? include all the big plot points but skip over all the smaller ones. write just enough to make the story make sense in as few words as you can. from there it's a lot easier to see what the pacing should be and what makes sense. if you've already planned out the middle and the end, you'll probably find planning the beginning and the whole out as well helpful. I do this with every new project I start, no matter how big or small it is, and then every time I sit down to write I can read over the document and I'll know exactly what I should and shouldn't be doing. it's super helpful and if you're a planner like me I 100% recommend giving it a go
also, remember that the first time you write it it's just a draft! try not to delete anything yet! you'll realise as you go along what works and what doesn't and when you return to make edits and additions, you'll know enough to fix the pacing and make sure it all makes sense. it sounds like procrastination, I know, and it's easier said than done but if you never get past the first hurdle, everything that comes after doesn't matter anyway.
best of luck to you c: writing is hard but so worth it in the end

Thanks! I just feel like I have so many characters to keep up with and they all play some role that ties everything together, and it's just making it all more difficult! I understand that ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/6575102/images/RCFqazfvhbMAeE5hIhD3.gif) It really stinks whenever you know what you want but putting it together is proving to be hard. The one thing I've found is, like ree said, writing out a summary/draft or your story help round off the rough edges and keeps it to the main, most important things. Another thing that works is flushing out a character with some sort of sketch, just so that you can really get a handle on all of your characters and know them more as people than just pawns. Just like in life, the characters, like you said, all have a singular role. Getting to know them a little better might help, but it's really up to you. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/6575102/images/lNtnPuxeCzkaKMNYVXVv.gif)

when I have writer's block, I find it helpful to just keep writing. even if it's not good, just get something down on paper. try not to delete it, and don't re-read it, no matter how tempting it may be. sometimes the only way to work through it is to just keep going. some things I do when I get fed up with writing:
- kill someone - draw my characters interacting or draw the scene - remind myself of the big picture (flesh out the overarcing storyline and fill in the details and subplots later; it will eventually all connect) - try writing the scene from another POV - listen to music that makes me think of my characters or sets the mood for the scene I'm trying to write - read other people's writing - work on developing the characters some more - look up AUs, scene prompts or sentence starters - write something totally different w/ your characters - tweak the plot or dialogue just a little
if you're having trouble with your characters, try to think of them as real people. they're living and breathing, just like us, and they each have their own quirks, fears, memories, childhoods, etc.; something that makes them each individual. try not to think of them as make-believe or all in your head. maybe put yourself in their shoes? and if you're really stuck, don't force it! walk away and do something else for awhile, then come back and pick up where you left off a couple hours later or even the next day.
hope this helps! c:

Work on a separate story. Writing one story while working on building another one oddly helps me out.

Thanks, everyone! This all seems like some pretty sound advice.
