When it came to the next leader of ThunderClan, I honestly never really pictured one after Firestar, even when he appointed Brambleclaw as his deputy. But honestly, I never really saw Brambleclaw as leadership material; it was just something about him that made me think he was a good deputy but he wouldn't be a good leader, or at least not one that would carry on the legacy of TC the way Bluestar would've wanted. And at first, when he made Squirrelflight his deputy, I really wasn't too into that either, because they'd only just made up and she isn't really deputy material. But there aren't really that many cats that would be deputy material in TC at the time; Brackenfur comes to mind, he's a good warrior who typically stays out of trouble and is noble and strong, a lot like Whitestorm, and perhaps he would've been if he wasn't such a background character. There's Lionblaze, but I don't like him as deputy either; he's too immature. There's Ivypool, but technically while she had an apprentice it wasn't appointed by the TC leader, and her being deputy would really come down to how the clan felt about her after the Dark Forest attack. If Hollyleaf hadn't died she'd be the best choice, and even with her killing Ashfur I think the clan would've rallied around her as deputy and she would've been great at it.
But ultimately, I realized that with Bramblestar as leader, Squirrelflight is the best choice for his deputy. They balance each other out, so together I think they make a pretty great leadership team, where as solo not so much. Although I do wish that the Erin's hadn't waited until the last moment for them to make up if they'd planned on making her his deputy, because realistically there's a big leap from I finally forgive you to be my deputy, and you can't really make it over the course of a battle. At the very least, show him working towards being cordial with her, so that way it makes sense when he finally forgives and trusts her again.
Plus they never really show the blowback he had to deal with from the situation, but it really messed him up. He pretty much had no one besides Squirrelflight, Leafpool and his kits, and then in one fell swoop he lost all that. His only friend left at that point was his sister, and she's in SC so it's not like he can talk to her. There's Firestar, but I'm sure he wasn't too keen on talking to the father of the two she cat's who shattered his reality. So really, he was alone during a rough time, and everyone around him either thought he was a liar who helped cover all this up or a fool for not seeing it all happening right under his nose, which meant his credibility as a deputy was shot with his own clanmates. And showing us his journey during this time would have honestly made it harder for us to believe he forgave her and then made her his deputy, so I guess the Erin's were smart for not doing so.
Anywho, which cat would you have preferred as deputy and leader? Or do you like it as is, Bramblestar and Squirrelflight?
Me, I would've liked to see Bramblestar and Hollyleaf (if she were alive), or better yet Hollystar and Brambleclaw, or Hollystar and Ivypool. Other choices include Bramblestar and Ivypool, and Bramblestar and Brackenfur (despite what the Erin's say, I think he would've made a great first deputy. Someone who's loyalty is unquestionable).
