let's talk about it! I'm an equestrian so I obviously think it's a sport but I want to hear y'all's opinions on it. also, I just went on a small rant about it on my instagram so if you want to watch that go to @thoroughbred.eq a little self promo never hurt anybody, right?

Man is that statement could have be more false. It takes a lot of muscle and skill to ride horses, I haven't but I have known many people who have.
To me unless you work a horse, horses are just very expensive pets.

agreed. I have a special kind of hatred for rich people who have horses but never ride them.

Leapkit - keep in mind that the rider is controlling a 1200 pound animal(if they're riding a horse; I don't know the average weight for ponies) with a mind of its own and is having to stay ON that animal. at anytime the horse can decide "screw it, I don't feel like doing this" and the rider has to ride through it. we engage our core, arms, legs, and glutes in riding as well as get a mental workout. we use our core to remain upright, our glutes to remain seated properly in the saddle, our legs to control the horse and stay seated, and our arms to, again, control a 1200 pound animal. I'm sorry if you can't understand how working out your entire body is a sport, but let me remind you that equestrian sports are in the Olympics and football is not.

Leapkit - horseback riders are some of the most muscular people you will ever meet. here are a few examples of how horseback riding is a sport and how we engage our entire bodies: http://instagram.com/p/BHXbP-oAJIE http://instagram.com/p/BHXbMSGAGP5 http://instagram.com/p/BB7lIrhSSbG This video was taken at the prime of my riding career, about two years ago. It was taking every muscle in my abdomen and legs to remain upright and at the same time that I had to maintain my position, I also had to keep my horse going as fast as he was - not an easy thing to do for him. - this is my absolute idol, Beezie Madden, winning the Grand Prix by little more than half a second. in the Grand Prix, the heights of the jumps go up to 5'3". tell me it wouldn't take every muscle in your body and every neuron in your brain to win this.

Leapkit - if you really don't think it's a sport for humans, get on a horse and go over 5' jumps yourself. It's not as easy as it appears

I wasn't meaning to offend you, just trying to understand.
But (american) football is kind of an american thing only. Unless you're talking about football as in soccer, it is in the olympics. Baseball isn't in the olympics either because america will automatically screw everyone over in that category either. Doesn't mean it's 'not a sport'. Plenty of things arent in the olympics either if you want to automatically categorize something as 'not a sport' depending on whether or not it's in the olympics. :V

I'm sorry, but anytime someone says that what I spend almost every waking moment of my life focused on "isn't a sport" I will get offended. And yes, I asked for it by making this thread.
A lot of people seem to forget that horseback riding is in the Olympics and then try to tell me that it's not a sport because of it. I like to remind them that yes, it is and no, football is not because most of the time I hear that from football players or people who worship football like it's the only good thing in life.
Riding horses is hard. It's grueling and is extremely demanding, mentally and physically. There are days when I get off and my legs feel like jello because I've been riding so hard. There are days when my muscles are screaming at me because I overworked the by riding the day before and I have to call off work because it hurts too much to stand and walk.
So I would do a bit more research next time before you try to tell someone that their sport isn't a sport. Especially a horseback rider.

I never told you it wasn't, I asked a question and gave my then-current opinion. I see your point though.
On a side note I'll never understand how football is appealing when half the rules don't make sense and tackling each other and butting heads is like watching male deer fight over a woman. Except they don't have horns and the woman is leather and shaped like an egg. The only good thing about football is seeing men in spandex pants.

Can I just say that is it super cool that you ride! I wish I did! I want to so bad!
I think that it is definitely a sport I think the reason a lot of people might overlook it is because they a. have never tried it, b. never seen it done, or c. think sports are limited to soccer, football, baseball, basketball ect (kinda like the same people who would say that dance isn't a sport or that gymnastics isn't a sport or in my case, that running wasn't a sport)

I mean riding definitely isn't for people who just want to exercise, unfortunately. you have to be really into the sport and taking care of the horse. it's pretty much a lifestyle and yeah it's all I talk about too cx
