The Unspeakable
“The fact is that we have no way of knowing if the person who we think we are is at the core of our being. Are you a decent girl with the potential to someday become an evil monster, or are you an evil monster that thinks it's a decent girl?" ― Derek Landy,
Cats Mentioned
Rowan - A small, russet short-hair tom-cat with small bright golden eyes with hints of dark brown.
Toad - A medium-sized, golden short-haired tom-cat with dark, round green eyes.
Rose - A large, broad-shouldered dark brown tabby she-cat with intense ice-blue eyes.
A figure stepped out into a faint ray of sunlight. For a moment, the the light wind shaking the trees seemed to stand still and holds its breath to see if anyone else came.
But no one else emerged from the lush forest scenery. While stepping even more into the light of the sun they exposed themselves to be a cat. Angrily growling the silhouette of the cat slipped back into the bushes. Seeming to like the feeling of being unseen and undetected. Once or twice a snag of his russet-colored fur caught on sticks and snagged on various plants, including thorns.
Soon reaching their destination the cat stared, awed, over the cliff into the darkness beyond.
As the cat stared down, another silhouette appeared. It seemed like the cat staring down the seemingly endless darkness didn't recognize them. So that eliminated the option of them being together.
Since the forest was just behind the first cat and it had dense bushes, the cat hid there. But there were branches strewn across the terrain, so the second cat naturally stepped in one.
The first cat whipped around, instantly alert and ready to fight. "Hello, is anyone there?" They called, shifting from paw-to-paw.
The second cat internally cursed. Mentally snorting they hissed "Hello, Rowan. It's been awhile." The second cat slid out into the first cat's line of view. It was a large golden tom-cat. His dark green eyes stared intently at Rowan.
Rowan growled, unsheathing his claws and hissing. "Why are you here, Toad? We ― we banished you!"
The tom purred with amusement, taking a step forward. He knew it would make Rowan take a step back because he was intimidated. And he was right.
Toad had started circling Rowan and very once in a while stepping forward. His ears were pressed against his dark brown head as he tried to ward off the bloodthirsty tom. Three or four times Toad lashed out and twice managed to catch his flank. Rowan yelped at the pain. Toad kept backing him up until they were almost at the edge...
"Someone, help!" The tom-cat shrieked as a noticed how close he was getting to the edge, no longer acting fearless. Every trace of menace was replaced with fear. "Help!"
Toad and Rowan both knew he couldn't escape Toad. Toad snorted. “Do you really think ―“
A simultaneous occurrence of snarls was heard as a nearing patrol of cats heard their comrades cries of help.
Smelling the scent of the rouge, they came across a horrifying scene of the two cats fighting: one cat they needed to come back, the other cat they hoped they never would.
In a firm line, six cats emerged from the green forest. Each had either a fierce expression on their faces, their tail lashing, or their claws unsheathed.
“Toad!” One cat screeched ― a dark brown tabby she-cat ― and leaped from the line, spitting. Toad crept away, towards the dense forest.
“You won’t be catching me today, Rose.” Toad meowed smoothly. He turned tail and fled. The insults behind him meant nothing.
“We will get you!” Yowled one.
“You’re lucky we have an in injured cat, fox-heart!” Yelped another.
I will get my revenge. He vowed as he fled away from the scene into the dense forest background. Hearing the sound of paw-steps chasing him away. Even if I have to do… He thought back to the cats, a few of them looked unsure at attacking him.
...The unspeakable.
