Aiko She was nervous, that wasn't a lie. Now, she had gone on missions before and she has slain evil before and she knew how to wield her weapon. She had stared danger and vile straight in it's nasty eye and has made it out every time, judging by the heart beating against her chest. But no matter what it is, or when it is, she was always nervous before a fight. Not crippling so, not to the point of tears and curling up in a corner. But just a lingering thought in the back of her head that said 'if you mess this up, you're screwed. Your weapon is screwed. Don't mess up', and the thought seemed to grow more and more insistent with each step they took closer to whatever enemy they were going to be facing for the day. And for this day, he heart thudded and her nerves ticked as they neared the staircase. She knew something would be waiting down there that she wouldn't find very pleasant.
This wasn't your average mission, though. It wasn't a simple clean-up or a gathering for quotas. This was a mission that really meant something. Something than bigger than Aiko, and something bigger than Xzavier. The world had been in disarray for the last few days and the DWMA hadn't seemed to make any major steps in the right direction, nothing seemed to be kicking off and no thoughts were connecting as to what was causing this hideous monsters to suddenly spring up. Or why they were springing up in the first place. And for the first time in this whole ordeal, one of the students had found this underground hide-out of sorts when she saw one of those mutants crawling out of it. Normally, the mission of exploring it would have been given to the person who found it.
But this wasn't the case.
It was given to the new pair, Aiko and Xzavier. They weren't partners for very long, that's for sure. They hadn't been partners for years and living together was awkward and they didn't have eachothers' habits down to par quite yet. But there was one thing that was undeniable. And that was how powerful they were together. Him, a strong weapon. She, a powerful meister. And the pair made a killer duo, on top of how well their souls melded and matched eachother. Like puzzle pieces, they clicked and together they were power houses. So what better thing to do than send out the most powerful duo in the class?
Which is how Aiko found herself with her partner in this dark and terrifying place.
Aiko tried to swallow down her worry and looked over at her weapon and partner-in-crime, Xzavier, who was running a couple of paces away from her. 'How does he do it?' She thought with a slight sting of jealously, watching that devilish grin decorate his face. No matter what they did he seemed to have an air of confidence about him, even a bit brazen at times. Like he didn't have a worry in the world - that he could accomplish anything and everything he put his mind to. And she couldn't help but admire it, as much as she desired that trait for herself. But heck, for all she knew it could be a facade. And he could be just like her.
But for the sake of both of them, she wished for him to be truly confident...to make up for her worry and self-doubt.
The alley they ran through was dank and dark, with the smell of mildew and wet draft everywhere they ran. Fresh air was no where in this facility, it was up on the surface where everything else good belonged. Where water was clean, air was fresh, and the sun shined. Somewhere she wanted to be. Lights flickered sterile white above their heads and the fact that the only sounds that could be heard was their footsteps was all rather unsettling - setting the scene for whatever they were about to encounter when they met the true part of their mission.
The could die. They could be tortured. They could be mutilated. They could go home as failures. They could be banished they could be locked away forever they could...
Aiko's eyebrows furrowed and she let out a sound of disapproval before she ducked her head and shook it. She shouldn't be thinking thoughts like that. That could only lead to them becoming true failures. It's better to look at the best case scenario right? The young meister lifted her head and looked back at her weapon. If anything, she needed to be strong for him. She could fail herself, but this was someone that was relying on her to make sure he got out safe and sound. She couldn't let him down. She was going to try her best.
So when they reached the stairs, she skidded to a stop above the first step and clenched her fists, jaw clenched in determination. It was dark and scary down those steps...and she was going to dominate whatever was down there. When Xzavier asked is she was ready she looked up at him and a hearty grin spread across her face and she felt a fire ignite in her soul. She was going to to her best and if her best wasn't good enough...well, she'd at least make sure he got out safe. That's the least she could do for him, her weapon, right? And heck, maybe he'd do the same.
"I'm ready if you are!" She announced with resolve before hopping down on the step next to him and glancing at him from the side of her eyes before hopping down the rest of them, taking it upon herself to start leading the way down these stairs. She needed to prove she was worthy following, and she craved more than anything to be a good meister. A just one. Even if it meant putting her life out on the line. Though she tried to stay as quiet as possible, her boots clunked noisily against the steps of the stairs and her skirt swished against her thighs. It would be hard for anything to deny that that wasn't something human-like coming towards it.

Xzavier gave a small chuckle at her antics, his throaty laugh echoing throughout the dense tunnel that they were beginning to travel in. "Eager, aren't we?" He teased her, keeping his baritone voice light and gentle as he spoke. Overall, this was mainly to soothe her nerves about their current mission. If his meister was feeling anxious, it was possible she could compromise the mission with even the smallest mistake. The burden was heavy on her shoulders to make sure the both of them would come out of this alive and he would try his hardest to relieve any sort of tension she had.
He didn't blame her, really, for feeling so nervous. If he hadn't lived through more complex jobs on his own, if he hadn't dealt with a life of rejection and bitterness, if his eyes hadn't witnessed so much bloodshed caused by his own hands, then maybe, maybe he would be feeling the same way she currently was. Maybe he would actually be considered normal. But that wasn't the case, anyone who lived through his situation would immediately be declared as deranged.
Instead, he felt nothing but pure serenity. The tunnels were his home; he had trained here a countless number of times, fought against His mutations to the death, all for him to grow into the deadly weapon he was today.
Their current mission was a dangerous one, far above the capabilities of many students enrolled at the DWMA. To be completely honest, he was surprised that both him and Aiko were sent out rather than a staff member or two. It seemed as if the duo didn't have what it took to complete the job successfully when compared to adults. They hadn't been partners for as long as he would have preferred and it probably would have been better off for an adult to take care of the creator of the mutants. It was worrisome, to say in the least. Because like all missions, death was probable. On this job, however, it was more than likely.
He wasn't fearful of that; if he died then that was his time to go.
He was worried for Aiko though. On their trip down to the alleyway and upon locating the stairway, she had been silent throughout the entire ordeal. Of course, she made small remarks here and there. And to those, Xzavier responded with a cheeky sentence that would earn him a smack on the head if she were his Mother.
However, her softspoken attitude was rare, seeing as how most of the time spent together was filled with her voice. He didn't mind her talking a lot, it was nice to have someone to talk to. Unlike Him, who barely spoke to Xzavier unless He needed the other to do something.
But her being quiet, it made everything seem.. off. He didn't like it one bit.
Seeing as how He was the main cause of the mutations, Xzavier decided it would be best if he led Aiko away from His laboratory. The mutant that they had been shown an image of had the trademark symbol burned onto their chest: a star with an eye. Xzavier had one too, burned onto his skin the first few days he had met Him. However, it was located in a more private spot, a place where peering eyes couldn't see.
Leading Aiko away from Him was the best idea he had, seeing as how they would never be able to beat Him, no matter how much training they would have. It was impossible. Xzavier had seen Him fight before, saw the malicious smile that lit His face as blood sprayed from His opponent left and right. It was traumatizing, engraved into his brain for years to come. There was no way he was going to let his meister face that kind of monster.
She had been a bright light in his life throughout the short period of time they had spent together. She was a small glimpse of what Heaven must feel like, he had thought, and his time spent with Him must have been Hell. In his opinion, Xzavier didn't deserve her. She didn't need someone like him to hold her back from reaching her full potential. He was a traitor, a spy for Him. At some point, Aiko was bound to find out. And then what? What was going to happen to the bond that was continuing to grow between them?? Shattered, most likely. He hoped that he wouldn't have to stick around to see her reaction when his traitorous actions came to the light; it would kill him.
Quickening his pace, he smoothly stepped in front of his meister, a firm hand held out to stop her from moving any closer. His footsteps were light and quick, his body movements as lithe as a cat's. "Allow me to lead the way, Aiko. We'd be in a mess if you led us into some sort of danger and wouldn't be able to fight." Xzavier murmured, keeping his gaze trained on the darkness in front of him. His eyes seemed to glow in the tunnels, as if detecting the mutations that lurked further in the depths.
