Okay, so it was always weird how the Three's destiny was revealed to just be fighting the Dark Forest, and they didn't really need their powers all that much to fight the Dark Forest anyway. Then they lost their powers...because.
I'd been working on this crazy origin story lore since around the time I first wrote the Featherfall theory, but it always seemed incomplete. Recently I rewrote that lore to make it fit into the Power of Three and Omen of the Stars arcs, and suddenly it works a million times better and resolves all sorts of lingering questions. I decided to share this new permutation of the lore and Era of the Three story here. Note that this idea of Breezepelt being the final boss is part of this, so you might as well read that post, but it doesn't really have much to do with this story other than being the final battle. Anyway, here we go.
The story begins at the end of time. Everything is about to fade away, and begin anew. As the world approaches the end, a tom named Little Star is dragging the dead body of his sister, Silver, towards a mythical lake. Apparently, it has the power to revive the dead, and he wants to get there and bring Silver back before the world ends. He's nearly there, but in the last leg of his journey, a badger catches his scent and pursues him. He manages to reach the lake just as the world ends, but he, the badger, and Silver's dead body all go tumbling into it.
They emerge at the new dawn of the time. The lake has revived Silver, and granted all three of them mystical powers. They crawl out and watch the first sunrise reflected in the lake, and see visions of the future that will come to pass.
Over time, Little Star comes to be known as Star, Silver comes to be known as Silverpelt, and the badger comes to be known as Midnight. Star finds out that he himself cannot bring cats back from the dead with his powers, for when they die, their souls pass Beyond. However, he can create a haven for the dead. With his incredible power, he creates the Starry Plains, where the souls of cats that still wish to watch over the living can do so until they are ready to pass Beyond, and the Forest of Solitude, where cats filled with pain, loss, despair, resentment, and other negative feelings can take time to work out their issues before they pass Beyond.
Star later founds his own group of cats, who live around the lake. With his knowledge of the future, he is able to guide them towards prosperity, and to help them avoid pain and suffering. Life is good for Star's cats. However, not all are content. Three cats, Dove's Wing, Lion's Roar, and Jay's Wing, believe that Star is holding them back, and that they should be able to choose their own fate. With help from Silverpelt, they rebel against Star and defeat him, in the process stripping him of his strength and vitality (Lion's Roar), vision (Dove's Wing), and insight (Jay's Wing). Star is left a shell of his former self, and becomes known as Rock. Silverpelt is also weakened, and I guess she...becomes Sol. (Sorry for making Sol a she-cat accidentally. It happens.) Jay's Wing, Lion's Roar, and Dove's Wing are mortally wounded in the battle and die, but with his last dying breaths, Jay's Wing names Half Moon the new leader of Star's cats.
With Star having fallen to pieces, the Starry Plains and the Forest of Solitude become broken too. Now neither of them let their occupants move on to the Beyond, and instead keep the souls trapped there, as if in purgatory. The representations of the cats can be destroyed or fade away with time, but the souls will still exist without form, still unable to move on. In time, as the Clans are born, these places become known as StarClan and the Place of No Stars.
The powers of Star cannot be destroyed, so in the present day, Jay's Wing, Lion's Roar, and Dove's Wing are reborn as Jayfeather, Lionblaze, and Dovewing. Meanwhile, StarClan and the Dark Forest have both grown large. The Dark Forest isn't filled with just evil cats. It's trapping any cat who died full of negative emotions. The leaders are just the villains because scum always rises to the top. The villains want their revenge on the living, but their plan is one most Dark Forest cats will follow, because they're sick of the Dark Forest. They will cause the Clans to destroy each other in the ultimate battle, and with no more living cats to remember them, all of StarClan and the Dark Forest will fade away. They don't know if it will work, but since their other option is eternity in the Dark Forest, they're willing to try anything. During her time in the Dark Forest, Ivypool comes to realize that most Dark Forest cats aren't bad, they're just victims of the Dark Forest itself.
The time of the ultimate battle comes, and it seems like the efforts of the Three and their allies to stop it are all for naught. However, the tide turns when Lionblaze realizes that his powers don't make him the ultimate killer, they make him the ultimate protector. He discovers that he can temporarily share it with other cats, and that he's been doing it without knowing it for his true love,
Lionblaze heads into the tunnels, the nexus point that connect all of the Clans, and gives everything he has to share his power with every single Clan cat. With this, he's able to temporarily stop the ultimate battle. The cats can't fight each other if they're all invincible, so it gives the others time to get them to talk things out. As well, due to her efforts to understand them, Ivypool is able to convince most of the Dark Forest cats to switch their allegiance to her instead of the villains after she kills Mapleshade. This just leaves the remaining villain fights before the story switches back to the tunnels. Sharing his power required so much effort and focus on Lionblaze's part that Breezepelt is able to come in and steal it when Lionblaze can't handle the effort anymore. (This is the point where the post I linked happens. Read it there, if you wish, since Breezepelt and Crowfeather's character arcs aren't really important to us at the moment. The gist of things is that Lionblaze gets his power back.)
In the climax of the story, Lionblaze, Jayfeather, and Dovewing fix the fractured relationship between Rock, Silverpelt, and Midnight, and return their powers to Rock to help restore StarClan and the Dark Forest. In the end, most of the StarClan and Dark Forest cats move Beyond, while a select few stay behind to watch over the Clans. Star, Silverpelt, and Midnight thank the Three and their allies before finally passing Beyond as well. The Clans make peace for the moment, and agree to work together to rebuild and create a new, better future. No longer will they be following along a path chosen for them by prophecy. The future is theirs, as long as they have the hearts of warriors.
And that's my redo of the storylines concerning Rock, the Three, and the Dark Forest. Tell me what you think.
