This is a story I'm working on and I will be posting it. Feel free to leave reviews and critiques.
If I get a following for this I will start making a calendar and dates to post new chapters, as well as polls and question and answers.
Prologue
She gritted her teeth as she pulled herself up the broken ladder, scrambling to reach the top before she was seen. Her muscles were screaming, overused and straining, from the constant running. The butt of the old crossbow swung against her hip, creating a rhythm with each pull up the rusted metal hanging off the wall of an old brick building. Smoke stung her eyes and caused each breath to come harder than the last, the orange light of the dying world casting her shadow against the soot-stained brick.
At last, she reached the top, dragging her laboring body over the lip of the roof and rolling into a crouching position, eyes darting warily around her, watching for every miniscule movement, waiting for… something. Slowly, she stood up, swords at the ready, pulled from hidden pockets inside her leather trench coat. The wind picked up her hair, playing with it and turning it into spun copper with the weak light of the sunset.
This is the story of the war, the one we’re in right now. Our entire world against an enemy that is neither seen, nor touched. Weakness is a death sentence, as only the strong survive; fear is not an option. The day it all changed, the day They appeared, was only the beginning of a life of terror and hardships. That day started the extinction of all human kind, and no one had known that it was coming.
The day that was burned into every survivors’ mind. April 17th, 2020.
~~
She remembered the day as clear as if it were still happening, even though it had been seven years since the start of the new world. The day was coming to an end, and she hadn’t yet fallen asleep. Even before They came, she had always stayed awake, watching over her little brother, making sure he was safe. That night was no different, as she paced the house, double-checking every lock, when she came to his bedroom door, cracked to let in a sliver of light. Hinges creaked as she pushed the door open and entered; at his bedside, she brushed his hair from his face and gently kissed his forehead.
Starting her routine yet again, she turned off the hall light and turned to the stairs. She froze as she heard the sound of growling coming from downstairs. Her body stiffened as she pulled out her trusty swords that her father had given to her before he died, they weren’t the best for home defense, but, as she couldn’t afford much, it’s what she had. “Piper?” She called into the stillness of the house, hoping the dog would quiet down and go back to sleep.
A creak on the bottom step of the stairs had her going straight into guard-mode. Crouching by the top step, around the corner, she waited. Piper’s growls washed over her and made her grit her teeth, whoever had dared to enter their house would be in a world of hurt. Something whispered, causing her to **** her head to listen closer. A flash of light flew by her and a dagger stuck into the wall, a shadow flying past her towards her brothers’ room.
It whispered again, going between shadows and avoiding any light, “Don’t turn on the lights…” She scrambled after it, Piper’s claws clicking against the wood of the stairs as the German Shepherd raced up. The shadow scurried ahead of her, pushing open the door of her brother’s room, the dagger going towards it with a few whispered words. “I warned you…” It hissed at her as she turned on the lights, it’s voice distorted and strange.
“Jax!” She cried as she followed Piper and barreled into Jax’s room, skidding to a halt as the shadow lifted her brothers’ small body up and pulled glowing streams from his body. “NO!” She screamed as her brother reached for her weakly, his small arm falling limply with a whisper, as the last of the shiny string fell into the creatures waiting mouth.
“Autumn…”
She lunged, and came up short as it dodged her, slipping away into the night as she collapsed by her brothers’ side, tears streaking down her face as she lost the last of her family.
That was the night she vowed that she would find whatever that thing was and destroy it.
