I want to start an art account somewhere but I'm not sure whether I should use DeviantArt, Tumblr, Twitter, or something else? I've used dA and Tumblr before and followed a lot of talented artists there but a friend insists that Twitter is the best- I'm curious what other people here use for art. I wish I could just go with all three but that would be a headache to keep up with.

I post on Tumblr occasionally, mostly because its not a great platform for art, at least in my experience. Art just seems to get lost within the tags, and considering the site updates so quickly due to constant posting, art tends to get lost in your feed, unless people reblog it. So yeah, I personally don't like Tumblr for art that much, but I know it really works for some people. the people who do well on there seem to post several times a day, but use a combination of platforms, so they have a huge fanbase. I feel like twitter would be much the same. I can't stand mobile twitter, so I don't spend much time looking at art on there.
I plan on starting a deviantart account next week or so.

Yeah I have noticed that about Tumblr certainly. I do like dA groups for getting your art noticed. I guess the thing about Tumblr is you can use it both to blog and post WIPs and to post finished art, while Deviantart feels more like it requires finished art in that regard.

True. I never actually posted a finished piece on Tumblr, just sketches. Look, I think its just a matter of trying a bunch of platforms and finding what works best for you.

That's true :/ I'm curious where other people on the forums post though.

If you're planning to use Tumblr you'll want to go with more fandom art than anything if you're trying to get noticed. But watch out for art thieves, they thrive there. DeviantArt is supposedly good, though I've never used it personally. My friend uses Instagram, but I swear the only art there is stolen art. Pick your poison I guess.

Thanks the responses! It does seem that it's a preference thing but overall DeviantArt is pretty popular? I might try both dA and Tumblr and just see what works out. Let me know if you want a follow or something once I make them

DeviantArt is what I use, though I never post it anywhere but here, I only use the stash.

If you ask me, unless you're already popular + all you do is post fanart/fetish art, your art will pretty much never be noticed as much as you want it to be, no matter what site you're on.
I primarily post my art on d.A. [Cloudclawz], but sometimes I'll crosspost stuff to my blog or Twitter [which I'm still trying to figure out how to unlock, thing keeps wigging out every time I try. Got falsely flagged because some algorithm changed and haven't been able to access my account in several months now].

Weird, that happened to me too with Twitter! I was in the middle of creating an account and the window got closed or something because now it says there's an account attached to my email but I never finalized a screenname or password. Not sure what to do about it really. It's true, internet fame is fleeting. (especially for original stuff) My old deviantart had some really great traditional art, but since I never did fanart, didn't post often, and wasn't that great at networking, it went pretty unnoticed. I'm a little better at all three of those things now, so I'm going to do my best. It's good motivation for producing more art in any case- since I made this account I've gotten noticeably better at digital coloring because of requests. Having an audience, however small, helps me a lot, personally.

Mine randomly got locked, and whenever I try and input my phone number to unlock it, it gives me a "this number is already in use" error even though it's actually not. And yeah, having an audience is always nice provided you can find enough people who are into your work. Definitely, though, internet fame is generally disappointingly fleeting.

» i use deviantart and instagram to kind of get my stuff out there! the only issue i have with deviantart is that since theres a lot of younger people (say, 10-14) that underprice themselves and it really harms those who do need to use art to make money. and, its really hard to get yourself known, but i feel like its easy to communicate with other people. so just submit to groups, and youll be off, hopefully! but beware the underpricing yourself. with the point system, people usually sell things for 30 points thinking its a lot, but really, thats just 0.30 cents. so when all those people roll that way it makes it harder for the others :/ 100 points = $1 (or 80 points = $1 really but people use the latter mostly)
ive also tried furaffinity, but i think thats worse than using tumblr... too difficult to get known and idk. i just dont find it visually appealing either.

Speaking of d.A. and its Points system, does anyone else find it ridiculously hard to get Points in the first place without having to buy them [I'm not allowed to have my own credit card, either, seeing as I still live with my parents]? No matter what ridiculous value that I adjust the price to, no one commissions me. If you're lucky, someone'll be trading stuff for a Llama Badge, but even then, they usually just trade a singular Point.

i mostly use da, tho i have in the past used tumblr (didn't go well for me bc i don't draw fan art) and occasionally use twitter. I find da to be the easiest to gain a following on in comparison to the other two, even tho over the course of a year and a half i still don't have much of an audience. I have had no luck with twitter, personally. with any of those platforms its really mostly luck, and da can be harder in a way bc there's no way to share another artists piece while with the other two you can reblog/retweet
tho if you do make fanart tumblr is a great place for you honestly. i've posted fan art a few times and each time got close to 100 notes within a week. you just gotta be sure to tag it.

Girl I was wondering the same thing, people on here have been encouraging me to get a dA so I might do it. I avoid tumblr/twitter because, as other people have said, it's mostly for popular fanart unless you're already a really popular artist. Deviantart's drawback for me is what you said, that it's mostly for posting finished pictures. You could maybe do deviantart/tumblr in conjunction, and have your tumblr linked on your dA page. That way people who like your art can go to your tumblr easily if they want to see more sketches/WIPs/etc.
If you make a dA let me know, I will make one with you and we can follow eachother heh <3
