The air cracked as large, yellow lights covered the sky. The clan was frozen, looking up at them. Their eyes wide and pelts standing on end. No one had said a word for many many heartbeats. Another horrible sound came from beyond the forest that they called home. It was louder than any monster on the thunderpath. Bumbleberry, the clan's medicine cat, stared at the lights intensely as if trying to figure out what they could mean.
"Perhaps it is an omen" She said to herself softly."
"Then what does it mean?" Featherstar asked after over hearing her. "I've served many many seasons and I've never seen anything like that." His voice was trembling and his pale eyes showed just how terrified he was. More lights shot into silverpelt, making the sky red and green.
Bumbleberry's eyes widened with what appeared as understanding. "Before the forest and run green with prey, it must first run red with blood. That is what I believe these lights mean." She took a deep breath and looked up to her leader. "A sacrifice must be made."
"A sacrifice? But who? And why?" The old tom asked, his face twisted in concern.
"I can't tell you why. It is just what my gut is telling me. The sound will scare all the prey away. And I think Starclan has been angry with a certain cat in this clan." She whispered, looking over at Lavender. She had been a loner for a long time before joining the clans and began stealing and hiding prey to eat later instead of feeding the clan.
The old tom nodded. His head had been growing fuzzy from old age and his sanity had been slipping. But the only cat he would trust is Bumbleberry. "Let all cats gather here today." He called. The cats, who had been stuck in a trance, turned their attention to Featherstar. "Starclan is angry with us. They send loud noises and lights to scare us and our prey. Only one thing will make them stop." His gaze turned to Lavender. "One this day, when the lights fill the sky, we will sacrifice the warrior who has contributed to the clan the least. Lavender, come here."
The soft white and brown spotted she-cat's eyes widened in fear and she tail puffed up. "Featherstar....
"If you don't come here, I'll have to go down there." He told her.
Lavender looked at him, fear scent drowned the camp. She backed away, looking around for the exit.
"If that's the way it's going to be." Featherstar hopped down and made his way towards her.
"Please. Featherstar please don't. Im carrying kits." She pleaded. But the tom didn't listen. He looked at her in the eyes and slashed her throat. And as the she-cat laid lifelessly on the ground, the lights stopped and everything was quite. But even so, Bumbleberry felt queasy. Guilt sat in her stomach like a large stone. Had she made the right decision? Was this what Starclan wanted?
