Today lets talk about something I don't see get brung up much. And one of the reasons why I don't like the modern tribe or Brook x Stormfur, haha. Oh joy, anyways rant time.
First of all, what is Stockholm Syndrome?
I'm pretty sure Stormfur suffered from SS during his time with the tribe, and one of the main reasons why he stayed with them in the end as well. I mean if the Erins aren't shy about putting religious, ****philia, and xenophobic references in their books, I highly doubt they'd shy away from Stockholm Syndrome. In fact they did the same thing recently with Violetpaw and the Kin. But that's something for another day, back to Stormfur.
Stormfur was singled out from the start, the Tribe kept dropping hints that they expected him to stay, but Stormfur always mistook them, and figured they meant other things. They'd bond with him, quickly grow friendships, to the point where even Crowpaw got angry about Stormfur spending more time with them over their group.
When Tawnypelt was healed and they wanted to leave suddenly the vibe turned rotten and hostile. They prevented them from leaving, and Stormfur is clearly distressed but tried to keep his calm. They even used force on them, to keep them from escaping, then moving them from room to room. And eventually used force to separate them, and shove the other cats out of the cave keeping Stormfur prisoner.
The scenes that make me angry though is when Brook speaks to Stormfur, she lied to him, betrayed his trust, and still expected him to understand while holding him prisoner. Forcing him into something he didn't want to be a part of, and expecting him to throw away the well being of his own Clan, his own faith, in favor of theirs. They threaten them, intimidated them, held them prisoner against their will while also treating them with kindness before hand, and even after everything got out they still tried to make Stormfur feel comfortable. Giving him the best spot, bringing him prey, offering to share tongues with him. This is literally the concept of Capture Bonding.
It's funny, cause the moment Brook was introduced, all she cared about was their precious prophecy, that's all she saw in Stormfur. All of them did. But Stormfur thought they liked him for who he was, not because they wanted their own hides to be saved. These cats are honestly horrible, does anyone remember when Stoneteller sent six cats to kill Sharptooth and not to return until they did their job? And only 3 were left, one of them was Brook's brother, who lost his tail to the mountain lion.
It's only when they escape thanks to Sharptooth attack does Stormfur feels more sympathy for them, enough to want to help them. If he hadn't bonded with these cats, hadn't known them over the course of several days, things wouldn't have happened the way they did.
The others weren't so eager to go back and help, and Stormfur was convinced that Silverstream told him to go, when asked about if she said it or not, he said "not exactly". Meaning it was his perception of what she meant. Anyways we all know the deal, they go back, Feathertail is actually the cat of their prophecy, she saves them, she dies, etc.
Now something I want to point out, is that when they did return to help, Stoneteller down right victim blamed Stormfur for not helping them, clearly blaming him for Star's death at the jaws of Sharptooth, along with the other damages caused the night they escaped. "You didn't help us. You ran away." Uhh??? Of course he'd run away for his life after you all were keeping him prisoner and trying to force your beliefs and hopes onto him while there's a crazy mountain lion running amok. Brook then says that she knew Stormfur would come back and was happy to see him...hmmm......seriously? How more obvious can this be.
Also when Talon came back they were quick to blame him and his group for not killing Sharptooth and even wanted him killed for disobeying them by coming back to the cave, just...gross.
The price for helping a bunch of cats with bees in their brains was the death of his sister, instead of mourning her sacrifice they celebrated Sharptooth's death just like that, causing Stormfur to flinch. The one that comforted him in a moment where he was emotionally vulnerable was Brook, one of the cats that held him hostage, furthering that bond again.
I really feel for Stormfur though, it's said that once or twice he's seen looking to talk to Feathertail, but then remembers she's dead. Shows just how close the two of them were.
Anyways fast forward to after Graystripe's capture, at this point Stormfur assumed the worse, like the other cats. His mother died giving birth to him, his father is probably dead, his sister died saving the the tribe, and he feels that everyone close to him is vanishing. He had given up his feelings on Squirrelflight because they were in different clans and thought Bramblestar suited her better. So by this point the strongest bond he had left was with the tribe and Brook thanks to that good ol' Stockholm Syndrome.
In the end he chooses the tribe over the clans, and like Brook says, he'll always keep coming back, yikes. He claims he's in love with Brook, and the other reason he stays is because Feathertail died there and is buried there. Now he has reasons to be tied down there, and none left in the clan, and he always assumed they didn't like him because he was Half Clan. So I guess you can add that last point, "negative feelings about the police or other authorities.
" to the list too now.
Six ways to Sunday all points to Stockholm Syndrome that's been romanticize, similar to Harley and Joker, or Beauty and the Beast, now that's just tasteless writing imo.
First of all, what is Stockholm Syndrome?
"It's a condition that causes hostages to develop a psychological alliance with their captors as a survival strategy during captivity. These feelings, resulting from a bond formed between captor and captives during intimate time spent together, are generally considered irrational in light of the danger or risk endured by the victims. Generally speaking, Stockholm syndrome consists of "strong emotional ties that develop between two persons where one person intermittently harasses, beats, threatens, abuses, or intimidates the other."
"Formally named in 1973 when four hostages were taken during a bank robbery in Stockholm, Sweden, Stockholm syndrome is also commonly known as "capture bonding".
Causes:
The crisis situation lasts for several days or longer.
The hostage takers remain in contact with the hostages; that is, the hostages are not placed in a separate room.
The hostage takers show some kindness toward the hostages or at least refrain from harming them. Hostages abused by captors typically feel anger toward them and do not usually develop the syndrome.
Symptoms:
The hostages have negative feelings about the police or other authorities.
The hostages have positive feelings toward their captor(s).
The captors develop positive feelings toward the hostages.
