My sister looks out of place on the storm-beaten beach, her pale ginger fur washed red by the light of the setting sun. She is ethereal in this light, like a phantom of the past: her fur perfectly groomed, a silver circlet studded with sapphires and opals resting atop her head to denote her station. She is a noble, born to rule over the city. I am nothing but a shell of the cat I once was, as broken and bedraggled as the debris that litters the beach.
I belong here. She does not.
To me, she is Eilena, my father's daughter. To the world, she is Vera Eilena, Vera Eieana of Da Eieana: Lady Eilena, Eiea's Lady from Eiea's City.
Eieana, eieana. Everything, Eiea's.
Like I could ever forget that.
Like I could ever forget that I, too, was eieana once.
Not anymore.
Never again. Tossed aside like driftwood, left to rot on the sand.
To Eiea, I was a reminder that she was still so, so naive. The youngest of the Five Gods, still so new, so trusting, so quick to think the best of people.
Well, now you know, Eiea. People aren't all good and pure. Lesson learned.
I knew that, of course. But I learned something, too: neither are gods.
"What are you doing here, Eilena?" I half turn to my sister, wary of what might bring her here, but knowing there's only one real reason she would come.
"Jace, it's about Theia."
Theia.
Even the one thing in life that ought to be mine as well as hers: daiea eieana.
Eiea's child. That's what we call the water wielder.
It's some sick irony, I'll tell you that.
I sigh, feeling the familiar ache in my heart. "Of course it's about Theia. It's not like the Vera of Da Eieana is gonna come talk to some scruff like me just for the conversation."
Eilena fixes me with her usual disapproving gaze, though there's hurt in it, too. "Jace, feeling sorry for yourself won't help matters. Believe me."
"Look, I think I have the right to feel a little sorry for myself."
"Right. It's not like anyone else has ever gotten their heart broken." Ouch. I forgot how sore the subject was for her.
"Look, Lena, I know you mean well. But you don't get to come down here once a year to pick my brain apart. You haven't earned that. Just... just tell me. What's the matter with Theia?"
"Well, nothing's the matter," Eilena says, too nonchalantly for it to be nothing. I brace myself as she continues, "It's just that the Council of Five have decided that, as the previous wielder, you ought to mentor her."
Stunned, I murmur without the usual fire, "They decided that, huh?" But then it hits me.
Theia.
A chance to see her, not just once a year, but every day. A chance to make up for all those lost years.
Seeing the look in my eyes, Eilena warns, "You know you can't tell her."
"Yeah, no, I know that."
She looks far out to sea, her eyes narrow. "She is no one's daughter but my own. Mine and Lydia's. She has no father." I open my mouth to argue, but she turns her steely gaze on me. "You gave up that right a long time ago, Jace."
I squeeze my eyes shut, trying to stifle the disappointment. "No, yeah. You're right. You're right." As always.
Eilena frowns. "I can't say I agree with the other council members on this, but it was a majority vote. The other wielders will receive mentors from among their own people, as well." She looks away, eyes distant, adding, "Though none of their mentors will be wielders, obviously."
I don't say anything. I can't.
I am the only wielder to survive to see the next generation.
The others are dead, and it's my fault.

watching ponyo to get in the right mindset for writing ocean things and remembering very fast how much i love this movie dANG
also this was absolutely unintentional but the colors-in-the-dark layout totally reminds me of bioluminescence in deep-sea creatures and i am totally using that for something here. i love the deep sea, the depths of the abyss, where live the greatest creatures of all time: sea pigs

so: like with the tuesday challenges, is there a min/max word count?
also, we don't have to write them in order, do we? and, if i miss a day can i write more than one on one day to catch up?
