I want to know the answer to this question desperately; why did the Erins decide to pair a she-cat born in POT with the elderly patrol guy?
It's probably some sort of weird agenda that the Erins have to fill that gives every semi-minor cat a mate. No matter what.
In my opinion, Blossomfall should've been paired with someone completely different. I would've liked to see her hook up with one of the cats that are dead now(example: Mousewhisker).

it's possible that after realizing they'd dead-ended Millie's other kits they decided Blossomfall needed a mate? since Millie's not blood ThunderClan
especially after killing Hazeltail
Mousewhisker is right there though!!!

Probably because of that one throwaway line in TLH where Lionblaze thought that the two were together when really they were just training together using Dark Forest moves. Quite a few people shipped Blossomfall with Thornclaw after that. Maybe even before then, and I think they were seen together a few times after TLH.
I guess the Erins just decided to make it canon after that.
Personally, I just don't care for it.

I don't mind Blossomfall having a mate....but....why Thornclaw???
It makes no sense.
If people are going to say it's because they're DF cats, then the same could be said for Mousewhisker??? Like???

I think a lot of it is the growing struggle of having relationships that are incest at this point. Thus, the Erins pair bizarre cats together in order to get kits that won't result in closely related mates. I also think this is the reason why ThunderClan is so huge now.

Because correct me if I'm wrong and Mousewhisker is actually dead the Erin's have been getting a love of complaints about incest in their books even though it's cats but whatever and both Blossomfall and Mousewhisker have outside blood and having them be mates would only have one 'non-incest' couple when by pairing them both up with different cats has two new families with fresh blood.

I may be pulling straws here, trying to make sense of it, but maybe because of some similarities? Thornclaw had his two sisters face some kind of accident that ended up disabling them somehow. His brother is a "nice guy." His father was deputy at some point and they both trained in the Dark Forest. I don't know. I'm trying to make some sense of it.

I think at some point off-screen, these two clearly interacted in the Dark Forest or due to that. Also, both have families that they seem...detached from. I hardly saw any interaction between Thornclaw and Cinder, Bright and Bracken, but maybe I just forgot some scenes? I don't know, but I do know that both seemed to respect eachother.
I urge the fact that cats do not work like humans. Age is not such a setting factor for cats. Of course, the whole personification of these cats make them act with human standars, and that can be a good point, but it wasn't like Blossomfall and Thornclaw were mooning with eachother when she was a kit.
They are two mature, fully named and grown warriors who chose with consent to become mates. Maybe Blossomfall wanted an older, more mature and stable warrior. Maybe Thornclaw wanted more energy and adventure in his life with a younger mate. Maybe both are troubled individuals that find refuge in eachother. This pairing never creeped me out? Because it was clear that they are both warriors and are capable of making their own personal choices.

It's more of that Thornclaw doesn't seem like the dad-type, and I think any other tom would be more suitable for being a father than him.

Personally, I think he'd be a stern yet devoted and responsible father, sort of like Brambleclaw. He's clearly trusted with alot of patrols and has been mentioned alot about his pros. But, I do feel like you have a point. He seems like he has a sense of akwardness to him that may not seem sound for a father. I guess only time and hopefully screentime will tell! ^^

Literally the only development they ever had was the throw away line by Lionblaze when he thought they were mates, but were actually DF trainees and realized he was wrong. It had as much weight as when Bramblestar thought Berrynose wanted Rosepetal as his mate, the Erins forgetting that they're half-siblings apparently. But then Bramble realized he just cared about Rosepetal, cause they lost too many she-cats during rough times, etc. And then skip forward and bam suddenly they're having kits out of no where, with absolutely zero romantic indications. They didn't have to be mooning over one another, but the pure fact that they were both DF trainees seems to be the only real connection that have romantically? Which is dumb, cause Mousewhisker could have been and good option too. And Thornclaw, mature? Yeah....no....he's not mature at all, and being a DF trainee should already speak volumes. He was old enough to be around for Tiger's mess and know a bunch of other bad cats like Hawk, Dark, and Broken, yet still willingly trained there??? Makes even less sense than Birch training there too. And considering his rude and nasty behavior toward Hollyleaf, he's nothing but an immature hot-headed hypocritical old coot. And this is coming from someone who doesn't really care, nor hate his character. I just see nothing appealing about him and Blossomfall being a thing, and honestly there's no real explanation for it except fan catering. Because despite that throwaway line Blossom x Thorn became incresingly popular even before it became canon, even though they had zero romantic development. Sure they're cats, but they act like little humans, maybe some readers are uncomfortable with a young character being with a much much much older character, whether they're cats or not. It's understand able if they don't like it.

To be honest, I don't think all relationships have to be huge masses of development, nor do they have to have tons of scenes of interaction. And Thornclaw, while showing foolishness in the whole Dark Forest incident, beforehand was shown to be a very active and mature warrior, at least to me. Oh well. If it's fan catering, it seems most people I know didn't like the pairing in the first place? And I mean, it's done and over with, nothing can really change it now. I guess we can just agree to disagree. ^^

If the characters weren't humans in fursuits, I wouldn't have as much of a problem. However, they do not act like real cats. Even then, the notion that real cats mate with whoever is inaccurate. Cats can get picky just like humans. Some cats don't care who they breed with, others are highly selective. But back to my point.
The characters are written with human emotions and morality mindsets. They care about their family, are able to work together in a hierarchy built society to care for one another...This means that our morals, and what we find morally right and wrong pertain to the characters. I do not urge anyone to look at these as just cats.
Typically speaking, we are greatly repulsed by large age gaps. It makes logical sense, as an older person is less likely to carry on the gene pool to the next generation. By that same logic, it doesn't make sense to have a younger generation character with someone as old as Thornclaw, who is nearly as old as her father, Graystripe. (Wiki gives me Graystripe at 125 and Thornclaw at 122) Blossomfall is 57 moons. This means that when Blossomfall was born, Thornclaw was 65 moons. In human terms, that is often considered unacceptable and a taboo. Perhaps it wouldn't have back when everyone died younger, but in today's age's, that is akin to a 30 year old with someone at 60 years or more - like someone's daughter marrying someone their father's age. In human morality, it is considered wrong.
Considering the characters think like us - humans - it goes to show that we have a valid complaint about this pairing.
